Abstract

This groundbreaking research endeavors to elevate participants' learning competence through the innovative integration of digital technology as a pedagogical medium. Pioneering a novel approach, this study seeks to gauge the efficacy of digital-based technology in enhancing English writing proficiency and participants' perceptions of its utility on the Storyboard That platform. Adopting a quantitative methodology, data is meticulously collected from experimental and control groups comprising nursing participants. Leveraging a synergistic blend of digital technology and project-based learning (PjBL), the research yields noteworthy gains in both knowledge and attitudes, with N-gain scores of 0.53 and 0.52, respectively. While initial trial results place competence and integration in the medium category, there exists a compelling imperative for further refinement and enhancement. The findings underscore the transformative potential of digital technology in augmenting writing skills and platform utilization, laying the groundwork for future innovations in English language education. By advocating for the seamless integration of digital tools like Storyboard That into the curriculum, this research not only fosters creativity and proficiency in English writing but also cultivates a dynamic learning environment conducive to holistic skill development. Ultimately, this study serves as a clarion call for educators to embrace the transformative power of digital technology in fostering English language proficiency and nurturing a generation of digitally literate and proficient learners poised to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.

Abstract

Small-scale gold ore processing areas have become a global concern due to their significant contribution to heavy metal pollution. The residual amalgamation process in these areas leads to the accumulation of heavy metals in the environment, which can bioaccumulate in living organisms. This study focuses on the lime plant (Citrus aurantifolia), commonly found in small-scale gold ore processing areas, particularly in Sukamenang village. The research aims to assess the Bioconcentration Factor (BCF) and Estimated Daily Intake (EDI) of heavy metals in lime plants to evaluate the risk to residents who consume them. Samples were collected using random sampling and analyzed with an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) and a mercury analyzer. The results indicate that Citrus aurantifolia has a BCF value of less than 1 (<1), classifying it as an excluder plant, effectively preventing heavy metals from entering its upper parts and allowing it to thrive in polluted environments. However, the consumption of these plants poses health risks. The study highlights the Reference Dose (RfD) values for heavy metals: Cu at 4.0 x 10^-2 (0.008), Fe at 0.7, and Hg at 0.0001, as recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in 2011. Heavy metals such as Fe, Cu, and Hg in the lime plants indicate potential adverse health effects due to their toxicity. This research underscores the necessity for monitoring and mitigating heavy metal pollution in small-scale gold ore processing areas to protect public health and the environment.

Abstract

In response to escalating energy consumption, particularly within the housing sector, a global imperative to reduce energy usage has emerged, propelling the concept of "smart houses" to the forefront of innovation. This paradigm shift owes its genesis to the convergence of advancements in energy conversion, communication networks, and information technology, catalyzing the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT). The IoT facilitates seamless connectivity of devices via the World Wide Web, enabling remote management, monitoring, and detection capabilities. Capitalizing on this technological synergy, the integration of IoT, big data, and machine learning with home automation systems holds immense promise for enhancing energy efficiency. This paper introduces HEMS-IoT, a groundbreaking energy control system for intelligent homes, underpinned by big data analytics and machine learning algorithms, prioritizing security, convenience, and energy conservation. Leveraging J48 neural network technology and the Weka API, the study illuminates user behaviors and energy consumption patterns, enabling household classification based on energy usage profiles. Moreover, to ensure user comfort and safety, RuleML and Apache Mahout are deployed to customize energy-saving recommendations tailored to individual preferences. By presenting a practical demonstration of smart home monitoring, this paper validates the effectiveness of the proposed approach in enhancing security, comfort, and energy conservation. This pioneering research not only showcases the transformative potential of IoT-driven energy management systems but also sets the stage for a sustainable and interconnected future.

Abstract

This paper examines applying the logistic model, frequently used in biology, to analyze inflation patterns in dynamic economic systems. The primary objective is to simulate and analyze the complex dynamics of inflation, thus providing new insights into the stability of financial institutions. Numerical methods such as Euler's Method, Runge-Kutta Method (RK4), and Adams-Bashforth-Moulton's method were used to simulate inflation patterns by discretizing the logistic equation. The data utilized in this research were obtained from INSTAT, BoA, MoF, and Eurostat, with quarterly results from 1995 to 2023. The simulation results indicated that the RK4 and Adams-Bashforth-Moulton methods yielded more precise and reliable inflation forecasts than Euler's. The logistic model represented the non-linear aspects of inflation dynamics well, emphasizing the necessity of using suitable numerical approaches. The study's findings highlight the effectiveness of the logistic model in economic analysis, specifically in forecasting inflation trends. Enhanced closure approaches have proven their effectiveness in analyzing intricate economic data, providing crucial insights into the stability of inflation, and informing policy formulation. This study utilizes the logistic model to analyze inflation dynamics, offering a unique methodology for comprehending and forecasting inflation in economic systems. An analysis of several closure techniques reveals a novel aspect of financial modeling tools. The findings indicate that incorporating advanced numerical methods can significantly improve the precision of economic models. These findings significantly impact economic research and policy formulation, especially in devising measures to manage inflation and ensure financial stability.

Abstract

This pioneering research endeavors to delve into the competencies of special education teachers in Indonesia concerning the development of literacy and numeracy assessments rooted in local wisdom, while simultaneously exploring the fundamental concepts of evaluation and teacher responsibilities. Employing a mixed-method explanatory design, the study represents a novel approach to understanding the intricate interplay between pedagogical practices and cultural contexts. Drawing upon a diverse research population comprising special education teachers across Indonesia, the quantitative component of the study employs a rigorous proportional random sampling method, culminating in a robust sample size of 457 participants. Meanwhile, the qualitative inquiry adopts purposive and snowball sampling techniques to ensure a comprehensive exploration of teachers' perspectives and experiences. Research data, spanning questionnaires, interviews, observations, and document analyses, are meticulously collected and analyzed using innovative methodological frameworks such as Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and variance-based Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) for quantitative data, and data reduction, display, and conclusion for qualitative data. Findings underscore the nuanced variations in teachers' competencies across different regions, with Bali emphasizing the basic concept of evaluation, NTB Province prioritizing teacher responsibility, and NTT Province echoing similar sentiments. This research not only sheds light on the unique challenges and opportunities encountered by special education teachers but also offers invaluable insights into the integration of local wisdom in assessment development, paving the way for more culturally responsive and effective educational practices in Indonesia and beyond.

Abstract

Employing a pretest-posttest quasi-experimental design, this study ventures into uncharted territory by investigating the impact of Concept Cartoons as a pedagogical tool in teaching Evolution on the academic performance of 40 Grade 11 STEM students enrolled in General Biology 2, conducted synchronously. Furthermore, the research pioneers an exploration into students' misconceptions surrounding foundational concepts in Evolution, leveraging Concept Cartoons as a formative assessment tool deployed within an online learning platform. The cohort was divided into control (n = 21) and experimental (n = 19) groups, with the former receiving instruction through traditional lecture methods and the latter through Concept Cartoons administered digitally. Surprisingly, while students exhibited a spectrum of misconceptions related to Evolution, both experimental and control groups demonstrated statistically significant improvements in academic achievement from pre-test to post-test. Intriguingly, however, comparison of post-test scores between the experimental and control groups via independent t-test yielded no significant difference in achievement. This incongruity prompted a nuanced discussion on potential contributing factors, including the efficacy of Concept Cartoons in digital media and unforeseen technical challenges encountered during synchronous instruction. These findings offer valuable insights for science educators navigating the transition from face-to-face to online instruction amid the ongoing pandemic, underscoring the importance of critically evaluating the adaptability and effectiveness of instructional materials within diverse learning modalities.

Abstract

Water intended for drinking purposes has to be analyzed first for gross alpha/beta activity according to national and international standards and recommendations. According to Albanian legislation, Article 6, the gross alpha/beta radioactivity concentration in water, should be below the level of 0.1 Bq/L and 1 Bq/L respectively for human consumption. Our laboratory participated in an interlaboratory comparison organized by IAEA Terrestrial Environmental Laboratory under suggestion of ALMERA members. Proficiency Test among environmental radioactivity monitoring laboratories for the determination of gross alpha/beta activity concentration in drinking water and contaminated surfaces (2018, 2020). Independent standard methods were used for the reference value determination. Each sample was pretreated on site with nitric acid until reaching a pH level below 2. By creating relatively non-polar surfaces, this procedure avoids a loss of radionuclide fractions due to absorption into the walls of the containers.The Gross alpha/beta activity measurements were done using gas-flow proportional counter (GPC) method. The total dissolved solids should not exceed a surface density of 5 mg/cm2 for gross alpha determination and 10 mg/cm2 for gross beta determination The performance of participating laboratories was evaluated with respect to the reference values using relative deviations. The results presented from our laboratory in both inter comparisons (IAEA-TEL-2018-03) and (IAEA-TEL-2020-03) were all acceptable. The laboratory for the measurement of gross alpha/beta radioactivity and our Institute as a part of Tirana University is in the process of accreditation, so far the participation in the inter comparisons exercise is very important.

Abstract

This study seeks to examine the effects of risk management strategies on the success of construction projects in Myanmar, a country with a rapidly expanding construction industry that has received little scholarly attention. Using a combination of traditional paper-based surveys and online questionnaires, a comprehensive dataset has been compiled for this study. The participants, which included project managers, project engineers, safety engineers, financial experts, and project proprietors, played a crucial role in providing diverse perspectives. From the initial sample of 500 questionnaires, a response rate of 84.6 percent yielded 397 valid responses. Using Smart PLS as a data analysis instrument, the study deconstructed risk management into its fundamental components: identification, analysis, response, and monitoring. In addition to the immediate effects, the study reveals the intermediate roles played by financial performance and Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) issues. The findings indicate a correlation between the implementation of effective risk management strategies and the overall success of construction projects. The intermediate effect of financial performance and HSE performance strengthens the relationship between these variables. This research offers significant academic and practical insights by providing evidence-based strategies to improve risk management practices in Myanmar's rapidly developing construction industry.

Abstract

This study ventures into uncharted territory by delving into the intricate tapestry of character values embodied by elementary school students, as delineated within the pages of the Independent Curriculum Class IV Science Teacher's Book. While the significance of character education in shaping young minds is widely acknowledged, this research pioneers a novel approach by scrutinizing the nuanced portrayal of character values embedded within the curriculum materials tailored for fourth-grade students. Leveraging a qualitative methodology, researchers conducted an exhaustive document study, meticulously collecting and analyzing the requisite literature, including softbooks and hardbooks. The findings unearth a compelling revelation: amidst the prescribed curriculum, certain character values crucial for holistic development are conspicuously absent, potentially undermining the efficacy of the teaching and learning process. Such gaps in character education not only impede academic progress but also exert deleterious effects on students' social and emotional well-being, both within the classroom environment and beyond. By spotlighting these lacunae, this study underscores the imperative for a comprehensive overhaul of character education initiatives, advocating for a more robust integration of essential values into the educational fabric. The research serves as a clarion call for educators and policymakers alike to redouble their efforts in nurturing a generation imbued with exemplary character values, thereby fostering a more compassionate and resilient society.

Abstract

In the rapidly evolving landscape of smart homes powered by Internet of Things (IoT) devices, the twin specters of safety and privacy loom large, exacerbated by pervasive security vulnerabilities. Confronted with a heterogeneous array of devices each with unique Value of Service (QoS) requirements, devising a singular network management strategy proves untenable. To mitigate these risks, device categorization emerges as a promising avenue, wherein rogue or vulnerable devices are identified and network operations are automated based on device type or function. This novel approach not only fortifies IoT security but also streamlines network management, offering a multifaceted solution to the burgeoning challenges. Recognizing the burgeoning interest in leveraging machine learning for traffic analysis in IoT environments, this study delves deep into the potential and pitfalls of such techniques. Beginning with a comprehensive framework for categorizing IoT devices, the research meticulously examines methodologies and remedies across every stage of the workflow. Key focal points include the categorization of public datasets, nuanced analysis of IoT traffic data collection methodologies, and the exploration of feature extraction techniques. Through a rigorous evaluation of machine learning algorithms for IoT device classification, the study elucidates emerging trends and highlights promising avenues for future exploration.
