Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether or not the use of Outdoor-Based Learning Strategy can improve the students speaking skill in terms of fluency and accuracy. This research was conducted in SMP Unismuh Makassar by using the true experimental design through two groups of experimental class and controlled class, and collected the data by giving pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population of this research was the first grade students at SMP Unismuh Makassar. The sample was taken by using purposive sampling technique which consisted with 17 students as experimental class and 17 students as controlled class. The research findings showed that the first grade students of SMP Unismuh Makassar have a significant different between students’ post-test in experimental class and controlled in speaking fluency and accuracy. The mean score of post-test (2.41) in experimental class was higher than the mean score of post-test (1.94) in controlled class. While in Speaking accuracy the mean score of post-test (1.94) in experimental class as higher than the mean score post-test (1.65) in controlled class. From t-test the t-test value in speaking fluency is 4.315 > 0.05 and in speaking accuracy 3.395 > 0.05. which mean that there is significant difference between before and after giving the treatment. It indicated that the null hypothesis (HI) was accepted, and the null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. It shows that the use of outdoor-based learning significantly improve the students’ speaking fluency and accuracy.

Abstract

The objective in this research was to help students in writing with using quillbot grammar checker at SMA 9 Muhammadiyah Makassar in the academic years of 2022/2023.the study used quantitative research as its methodology. Pre-test and post-test about composing recount text were employed in this study. Students in the XI class at SMA 9 Muhammadiyah Makassar during the academic years 2022-2023 were focus of this study. In this study, samples were chosen at random, and the total population was 122 students, and the sample number was 24 students. The researcher used the writing test to gather quantitative information. The type of test was a recount text in which different topics are given to recount. The mean score of pre-test in the terms of students’ writing was 76, while in the post-test was 93, 4, and the improvement was 22, 89%.  It could be concluded that helping students’ writing shows that the using quillbot grammar checker improved the students’ writing, especially in terms of content, organization, vocabulary, language use, and mechanics. It indicated that there is significant improvement in students writing skills after being used quillbot grammar checker. Based on the result, quillbot grammar checker needed by students. It showed that using quillbot grammar checker was effective to help in learning process especially in writing. The researcher advised students to use any similar tools or website if it necessary but don’t forget to learn more about writing and always keep practice.

Abstract

This study aimed to improve students' pronunciation skills, specifically vowel sounds, through the use of phonetic transcription. A pre-experimental method was implemented, involving 25 eleventh-grade students at SMA Negeri 6 Jeneponto. The treatment consisted of structured pronunciation lessons using phonetic transcription as the primary instructional tool. The pre- test and post-test assessments included 20 vowel sounds, measured to evaluate students' progress. The results demonstrated a significant improvement in students’ vowel pronunciation, with mean scores increasing from 46.32 in the pre-test to 77.16 in the post- test. The paired samples t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000, confirming the effectiveness of phonetic transcription in enhancing students' pronunciation accuracy. Based on these findings, the alternative hypothesis (H1) was accepted, indicating that phonetic transcription significantly contributed to improving students' pronunciation of vowel sounds. This research concluded that phonetic transcription is a valuable and effective approach for addressing vowel pronunciation difficulties in English language learning. Therefore, it is recommended that educators integrate phonetic transcription into their teaching strategies to enhance students’ pronunciation and overall communication skills.

Abstract

This researcher aims to determine whether there is an increase in Fluency and Accuracy by using the Collaborative Learning Method for class VII students at SMP Negeri 2 Kelara. The researcher used a pre-experimental approach with a quantitative design in analyzing the data. The instrument used was a speaking test consisting of a pre-test, treatment, and post-test. The population was class VII students and the sample was class VII.1 which was selected using a total sampling technique. The total number of students was 25 students. The results showed that after implementing the collaborative learning method in English learning, it could improve students' Speaking Performance in Fluency and Accuracy in class VII.1 SMP Negeri 2 Kelara. This is evidenced by the average value of students who experienced an increase in pre-test students on fluency got 33.76 and post-test got 40.08. In addition, pre-test students on accuracy got 40.80 and post-test got 54.12. From the results of testing the hypothesis of this research are Pair 1, namely pre-test and post-test fluency is 0.000 (p < 0.05) and vocabulary in Pair 2, the significance value (2-tailed) from pre-test to post-test is 0.000 (p < 0.05). Therefore, the used of the Collaborative Learning Method has a significant effect on improving Speaking Performance in fluency and accuracy in class VII.1 at SMP Negeri 2 Kelara.

Abstract

The objective of the study is to find out the effectiveness of the English movie in teaching English speaking to grade seven students of SMPN 1 Mepanga in the academic year 2024/2025. The sample of this pre-experimental research was grading seven students of SMPN 1 Mepanga which consisted of 28 students of the VII D class chosen by using the purposive sampling technique. The data were collected by using a speaking test conducted before and after the treatment, or pre-test and post-test. The data was analyzed by using statistics methods. The result shows that there was a significant improvement in the student’s speaking ability. It was proved by the result of the t-counted (19.13) which was greater than the t-table (1.703) in the significance degree, (0.05). The conclusion of this research indicated that the English movie is effective in teaching English speaking in the classroom and provides a significant effect to improve the students’ speaking ability.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to expose students’ vocabulary size of SMPN 1 Sindue Tobata Donggala. Mixed methods design was utilized which involved two classes. The sample of this research was the grade VIII students of SMPN 1 Sindue Tobata which consisted 42 students and the informants were 4 students who are at good and poor score. Test and interview were distributed to collect the data. Vocabulary Level Test (VLT) was given to identify the word level of the students and interview was conducted to identify the factors that make students are difficult to master vocabulary. Therefore, the results of this research present that 27% students are at 2000-word level, 28 % students are at 3000-word level, 19 % students are at 5000-word level and 26 % students are not categorized or below the 2000-word level. Lack of strategy and interest in learning English are indicated as the internal factor. In addition, lack of media, technology and environment support are indicated as external factor. Thus, the teacher can provide some solution to bridge and solve the student’s problem in improving their vocabulary size.

Abstract

This study examines the effectiveness of the Total Physical Response (TPR) method in improving listening comprehension among second-year students at SMPN 1 Libureng-Bone. Addressing the urgent need for more engaging and effective strategies in English language instruction, this research highlights TPR as a movement-based, learner-centered approach. Using a pre-experimental design with a single-group pre-test and post-test, the study involved 30 randomly selected students from Class VIII.D over eight sessions, including treatment. Findings revealed a substantial increase in students’ direct meaning comprehension scores—from a pre-test mean of 4.05 to a post-test mean of 7.9, reflecting a 93% improvement. These results suggest that TPR significantly enhances listening skills by promoting active participation and cognitive engagement. The study contributes to the growing body of research supporting TPR in EFL contexts and offers practical implications for improving English instruction in Indonesian secondary schools.

Abstract

This research was attempted to improve students’ reading comprehension by using Neurological Impress Method (NIM). This study was conducted by using pre-experimental research. The object of the research was VIII.A grade SMPN 33 Makassar consist of 25 students. The research was conducted four meetings and three steps. The first meet, the researcher explained about the Neurological Impress Method (NIM) and how to uses this method, the second the researcher gave pre-test, and then gave treatment, and the last meet gave post-test. The instruments of collecting data were reading test. Based on the reading test score, students’ score kept improving in every test. In the pre-test the mean was 56, and in the port test the mean was 68. It proved that using Neurological Impress Method (NIM) to improve students’ reading comprehension showed significant result by improving around 12.6%. It was found that teaching learning process ran well. Students were active and interested in reading. The result of this research showed that Neurological Impress Method (NIM) can improve students ability in reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study examined the use of the Make a Match Technique on literal reading comprehension. It was use descriptive text. Researcher was applied Pre- Experimental Research. It aimed at to find out the effectiveness of using Make a Match to improve the students’ reading comprehension at the second grade students’ of SMPN 1 Takalar 2022/2023. The sample of this research was the students of VIII. 1 class of SMPN 1 Takalar. This research was used purposive sampling technique. The researcher obtained the data using pre-test dan post-test. The mean score of the pre-test was 45,88 and post-test was 80,88. That was better increase of the mean score by students’ at the post-test. The test's outcome indicated a 3.273>2.036 significant difference between the t-test and t-table, indicating that the t-table was smaller than the t-test. That was proved by the t-table value 2.036 which was smaller than t-test 3.273. Based on the result of the analysis, it was concluded that using Make a Match technique could improved the students’ reading comprehension at the second grade students of SMPN 1 Takalar.

Abstract

Character education has an important role in the education system besides the teacher providing material, also instilling character education in the teaching and learning process. The aims of this study was to find out the values of character education in English textbooks for tenth and eleventh grades published by the Ministry of Education and Culture in year 2017. The focus of this research is on the value of character education contained in the contents of English Textbooks based on the suitability of character education from the 2013 curriculum. The research methodology is descriptive with a qualitative approach and uses content analysis techniques. The research instruments were documentation and datasheets to present data. Source of data the researcher analyzed the narrative text in very chapter of English textbooks. The characters found are classified into 18 character values based on the 2013 curriculum and are classified into integrating character values either directly or indirectly. Based on the findings of this research, of the 18-character education values, there are only 7 character educations consisting of 4 narrative texts. The 7 values of character education are religious, honesty, hardworking, curiosity, appreciation, social care and responsibility. The most dominant characters are hardworking and social care. In addition, the direct integration technique is more dominant in this study.
