Abstract

This article examines the involvement and role of bazaaris in the Persian Spring from 2009 to 2011. As economic actors, these bazaaris participated in political activities that opposed Ahmadinejad’s victory in the Iranian presidential election. This rejection sparked mass mobilization, fueled by religious fervor, political and social ideologies, and economic concerns. The qualitative research approach employed in this study utilizes political sociology, drawing data from literature reviews and digital fieldwork. The data analysis conducted in this research employs the theory of conflict and mass mobilization, yielding two significant findings. First, it reveals that the political-economic network of bazaaris is cross-border and multi-dimensional. Second, it highlights that the mass mobilization of bazaaris against Ahmadinejad is primarily motivated by political and economic competition. Consequently, the findings of this study contribute to enriching the discourse of political sociology, particularly in conceptualizing popular resistance movements against authorities based on political-economic conflicts. These conflicts are intricately woven into the fabric of magnetic field politics, which tend to be transactional in nature.

Abstract

Fearing discrimination from the Indonesian government, the Nuaulu tribe in Central Maluku have chosen to declare themselves as “Hindu”. Their ancestral customs are similar to mainstream Hindu beliefs and traditions. However, they lack the Hindu Gods, the Sanskrit mantras and the unifying scripture of the Vedas. What is left is a local indigenous religion. However, their bad experience with being categorized as an ancestral faith (aliran kepercayaan) has led them to be self-declared Hindus. In such a circumstance, Hinduism can either unconditionally accept them despite the lack of evident resemblance, or the Nuaulu tribe can alter their religion’s façade to duplicate crucial Hindu identifiers. This paper questions what it means to be a Hindu, what Hinduization is, and how discriminatory definitions torment indigenous religions.

Abstract

Dogmatic Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning in schools seems to lack of attention to environmental issues. Thus, IRE needs to incorporate environment issues. This study aims to analyze the concept and implementation of strengthening environmental care character education through IRE development as well as its implications in framework of eco-culture formation, using MTsN 1 Sumenep and SMPN 2 Larangan Pamekasan as case studies. Using a qualitative approach with a multi-site study design, This research used interviews, observations, and documentation in collected data. The research findings show that the concept of strengthening environmental care character education through IRE development describes efforts to strengthen environmental care character holistically-integrated through curricular, co-curricular, and self-development activities. While its implementation is carried out through 4 stages, namely design which includes identifying the types of activities, developing environment-based IRE study materials, preparing supporting facilities; implementation which includes integrated IRE learning, school management, and student development activities; monitoring and evaluation is carried out through supervision activities and monthly meetings; follow-up refers to school self-evaluation. While the implications can be seen from 3 aspects; the improvement of educational services, changes in learner behavior, a decrease in school operational costs and the existence of class funds.

Abstract

This article proposes an alternative model for maintaining interfaith peace by studying the harmonious relationship between Muslim and Catholic communities in Padukuhan Pringwulung, Yogyakarta. This research aims to promote religious moderation in the context of a multicultural society. Data were obtained through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation studies. The results show that the Pringwulung community has demonstrated a real example of social integration and interfaith harmony. Although the majority of the population is Muslim, there are harmonious religious practices through culture-based activities, such as traditional arts, traditional ceremonies, and syawalan, which involve all residents. Dukuh, RT, and RW act as the driving force in creating a shared vision that strengthens the relationship between the Muslim and Catholic communities. In addition, human values, mutual respect for differences, and mutual trust are the main foundations of maintaining harmonious relationships. Pringwulung reflects the importance of valuing diversity as social capital that strengthens community integration. This community has become not only a local model but also a global inspiration in efforts to build a safe, peaceful, and harmonious environment. Therefore, efforts to change and preserve the harmony of diversity must start from the smallest scale to create good habits that have a wide impact.

Abstract

Continuous concerns about intolerance among religious communities have given rise to new models of dialogue facilitated by religious communities on social media. Habib Ja'far al Hadar and Onadio Leonardo are unique and contemporary representations of the commitment to interreligious dialogue on social media for peace between religious communities. This research is qualitative, descriptive-exploratory. The data source for this study was obtained through the Log-in podcast content, while secondary data was taken from books, journals, and media related to interreligious dialogue. Data collection techniques are divided into Observation and Documentation. Data analysis techniques include data reduction and presentation using a pluralism approach. Log-in discussions between religious communities are comedic, honest, open, and enthusiastic about learning from different people without demanding absolute truth and not patronizing each other. The model of interreligious dialogue practiced in the Log-In Podcast is love dialogue. The term Love Dialogue is an exploratory meaning of several podcast episodes. It is taken from Habib Ja'far's sect of love, which has the principles of compassion and brotherhood in humanity. Interreligious dialogue shifts to religious recognition because of the same vision and mission.

Abstract

The “One Pesantren One Product” (“OPOP”) program is a West Java provincial program that has become an initiative in building Islamic boarding school self-sufficiency through economic empowerment by assisting Islamic boarding schools in choosing marketable commodities, providing training, and mentoring. This study aims to analyze the OPOP program's effectiveness in fostering self-sufficiency as a form of sustainable development in Tasikmalaya. Using a qualitative approach that includes case studies and in-depth analysis, this research identifies the significance of the realization of the OPOP program on the self-sufficiency of Islamic boarding schools in Tasikmalaya who recipients of OPOP stimulant funds are. The research examines how the program has facilitated improvements in the economic aspects of Islamic boarding school self-sufficiency. The results show that the OPOP program is able to encourage the financial independence of the OPOP recipient pesantren in the scale-up category by optimizing business productivity, expansion, and networking of pesantren product marketing, which leads to an increase in pesantren income. This explains that the OPOP program can support the successful development of sustainable Islamic boarding schools, especially in financial independence.

Abstract

This study discusses how the majority Muslim community in Aceh responds to the use of the hijab by non-Muslim women in the context of the implementation of Islamic law. The implementation of the Islamic Sharia Qanun in Aceh requires Muslims to wear Islamic clothing. However, it does not apply to non-Muslims, although many non-Muslim women still choose to wear the hijab as a form of social adaptation. Using a qualitative approach and case study method, data were collected through in-depth interviews for one month with eight informants selected by purposive sampling, namely the majority Muslim community in Aceh and those around non-Muslim women who wear the hijab. Symbolic interaction theory analyzes the meaning created by the hijab symbol in social interaction. Gramsci's hegemony theory analyzes the dominance of the majority culture through social consensus without direct coercion. The results of the study show that the majority of Acehnese people accept the use of the hijab by non-Muslim women as a form of respect for local norms and culture. Most informants support this step, although there are concerns about the potential for blurring the identities between Muslims and non-Muslims. This study emphasizes the importance of religious tolerance and moderation to maintain social harmony in areas with religious plurality.

Abstract

This research explores religious diversity and the value of harmony in the traditions of the Waraka community using a descriptive qualitative approach. The primary objective is to analyze how religious diversity is recognized in daily life and how values of harmony are promoted through their traditions. Data collection methods include in-depth interviews, direct observation, and document review with key informants such as the King of Waraka, his wife, religious leaders from Christianity, Catholicism, and Islam, as well as community members from various religions, including the King’s daughter-in-law from Manado. The collected data was analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s data analysis techniques. The findings show that the Waraka community practices interfaith tolerance through the joint construction of places of worship and shared religious celebrations. Traditions like “Ronda Kambing” and “Natsar Negeri” serve as concrete examples of interfaith interaction that strengthen social understanding. This research concludes that the religious harmony practices in Waraka can inspire the creation of inclusive and tolerant societies globally, with an emphasis on educational approaches and more structured interfaith dialogue.

Abstract

Hanan Attaki, founder of the Shift (a youth hijrah movement), pledged allegiance (bai’at) to Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), one of Indonesia’s most prominent traditionalist Islamic organizations, sparking significant responses from his extensive social media following of ten million on Instagram and two million on YouTube, most of whom are young people. This paper aims to explore the new step of Hanan Attaki’s da’wah and the religious authority of NU’s Ulema through social media by examining shifts in Hanan Attaki’s da’wah approach pre- and post-affiliation and investigating how his affiliation enhances the influence of NU’s ulema mainly through his social media platforms, using Fajri Alatas’ theory of religious authority. This study uses a qualitative method by analyzing content on the YouTube and Instagram accounts of Hanan Attaki using netlytic assistant. This paper argues that joining Hanan Attaki at NU is one of his da’wah strategies to spread da’wah across society, including the grassroots. At the same time, Hanan Attaki contributes to spreading the authority of NU ulema and its ideology among millennials through social media.
