Abstract

This article discusses the resilience of Muslim identity and the awareness of halal principles among Indonesian Migrant Workers (IMWs) in South Korea. As a developed country with strong economic growth, South Korea has become an important destination for migrating Indonesian Muslim communities. By applying symbolic interaction theory, this research provides insight into understanding the role of religion in social interactions, identity formation, and the interpretation of halal products by IMWs and other social actors in the Korean environment. The research findings on IMWs indicate that there are at least two attitudes among the Indonesian Muslim diaspora in South Korea regarding their Islamic identity as measured by their awareness of halal principles. The first attitude is selective and strictly adheres to the religious values prevalent in Indonesia. The second attitude is a permissive one, where an Indonesian Muslim diaspora makes efforts to adapt their values to the local culture as long as they do not violate clear boundaries in Islamic law.

Abstract

The understanding of the hadith becomes diverse when it is read and understood from different perspectives. The condition is static when the hadith is understood textually but will become elastic when approached and analyzed with a ta'wil approach. This study aims to reveal the salafi-sufi hadith and its influence on religious practices in West Sumatra. The method used is descriptive analysis by revealing the Salafi and Sufi ways and then analyzing the character so that it has an impact on differences in religious practice. The results showed that the differences in views in understanding the hadith were due to efforts to legitimize religious authority, the textual salafi group did not open space to develop a text but on the other hand the Sufis who tended to use the construction of kasyf accommodated the value of locality so that it affected religious practice both in terms of perspective and attitude.

Abstract

The DI/TII rebellion in Lembang Kaduaja, Tana Toraja, commanded by Kahar Muzakkar, was highly detrimental to the local population. The rebellion caused them to endure suffering until it became a traumatic memory for the community. We employed a qualitative approach to interpret the traumatic memory they interpreted as a spiritual experience. Therefore, phenomenological investigation is employed. The trauma memory will be examined from the perspective of Simone Weil and Dorothee Solle’s esoteric theology. The ideas of these two mystics will be compared and contrasted in order to demonstrate that the experience of suffering can also be interpreted as a form of intimacy and hospitality with God and others. Based on the dialogue, we conclude that the trauma memory experienced by the residents of Lembang Kaduaja is a supernatural event. The trauma memory encountered by the community teaches them the significance of living in peace. Tosangrapu and Siangkaran represent two dimensions of the Kaduaja community’s response to their mystic experience.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the involvement of the Interfaith Youth Community (Pemuda Lintas Agama, or PELITA) in Padang as an active movement engaged in social advocacy against Islamic conservatism in West Sumatra. This youth community carries out various interfaith advocacy activities and peace campaigns and facilitates spaces for social encounters to promote tolerance and respond to incidents of intolerance and discrimination in the region. The research uses a qualitative method with an interfaith advocacy approach. The findings reveal that the active role of youth as initiators and drivers of counter-narratives to religious conservatism not only helps to curb the growing dominance of conservative discourse in public spaces but also attracts other young people to engage in issues of diversity. Through its wide range of activities, youth engagement in diversity-related issues proves to be highly significant and strategic in constructing a counter-narrative to religious conservatism, particularly in the face of passive (permissive) tendencies among the majority group. This research offers recommendations and key lessons in encouraging active youth involvement in interfaith advocacy as a means to promote tolerance and inspire similar movements across other regions in Indonesia

Abstract

Religion continues to be a critical domain in Indonesian public life, but its governance remains fraught with contestation, especially at the local level. This study analyzes how dominant and counter-narratives influence the implementation of religious pluralism policies in Indonesia, focusing on the conflict surrounding the HKBP Maranatha Church in Cilegon. Applying the Narrative Policy Framework (NPF), it maps how policy actors construct, reinforce, and contest narratives surrounding the enforcement of Joint Regulation No. 9/8 of 2006. The findings show that historical, legal-administrative, and human rights narratives compete to frame the conflict, with exclusionary narratives dominating through outdated decrees, social pressure, and policy ambiguity. In contrast, counter-narratives advanced by civil society and minority groups seek recognition and justice. The study reveals that legal vagueness and weak national oversight enable institutionalized discrimination. It recommends regulatory revision, institutional strengthening, and the cultivation of inclusive narratives to promote equitable religious governance. The study’s limitations include its localized and temporal focus, suggesting the need for comparative or longitudinal research in future studies across different regions. This research contributes conceptually to narrative-based policy studies and empirically to religious governance debates in plural societies.

Abstract

This study explores the Bajapuik tradition in Minangkabau weddings, focusing on its embedded religious and social values. Specifically, it examines how this tradition fosters inter-family bonds while adapting to the pressures of modernization, including changes in social structure, gender roles, and economic challenges. Using a descriptive qualitative method and historical approach, data were collected through interviews with traditional leaders and cultural observers, as well as direct observation of marriage ceremonies in Pariaman. Findings show that Bajapuik is more than just a ceremonial custom; it reflects core Minangkabau values, including cooperation, family honour, justice, and spirituality. As part of a matrilineal society, the bride’s family offers symbolic respect to the groom’s family, an inversion of most bridewealth practices globally. Although the form and amount of Bajapuik have changed due to external influences and economic conditions, its cultural essence remains strong. Comparatively, Bajapuik shares social functions with mas kawin in Islamic tradition, dowry in South Asia, and bride price in African societies. Despite differences in direction and symbolism, these practices serve to affirm kinship ties, reinforce social status, and embody shared cultural values.

Abstract

This article analyzes the practice of bese-sono in the Atoni Pah Meto society as a manifestation of love for God, using the theological perspective of Saint Augustine. Employing a qualitative approach, this study utilizes both primary and secondary data. Primary data were obtained through in-depth interviews with key informants, including religious leaders, traditional leaders, community leaders, educational leaders, government leaders, and ordinary people (10 in total). Secondary data were gathered through a literature review of sources relevant to the topic. The findings reveal that bese-sono is a manifestation of deep love, where self-sacrifice for the common good becomes a concrete expression of love for God and others. This is demonstrated through social rituals. In this context, Augustine's teachings on love for God provide a theological foundation for understanding the practice of bese-sono as an expression of solidarity that unites members of the community. This is possible because a deep understanding of the values of love can shape a harmonious social life and strengthen relationships among individuals in the broader society. Thus, this study offers a new theological perspective on sacrifice and solidarity in local communities, enriching the field of social theology.

Abstract

The gotilon feast is an ancient tradition that has been observed both before and after the introduction of Christianity and has undergone a transformation in meaning after being incorporated into the church liturgy in the HKBP Manado. This research aims to analyze the gotilon feast in the context of the Toba Batak diaspora in Manado by examining how this practice is carried out in HKBP Manado as a space for an encounter between religious identity and Toba Batak cultural expression. Using a light qualitative-ethnographic approach, as well as Pierre Bourdieu's theoretical framework - specifically the concepts of habitus, field, and doxa; this research shows that this tradition is the result of symbolic practices that are continuously reproduced, not solely because of theological dogma, but as a result of the social and historical structures that shape it. Within the diasporic social field, the gotilon feast occupies a strategic position as a mechanism for maintaining collective identity. However, it also presents a tension between religious particularism and culture and the demands of multiculturalism within the church. As a spiritual and social glue, this practice makes an important contribution to the conceptualization of contextual theology, the sociology of religion, and the dynamics of Toba Batak diaspora traditional practices.

Abstract

This article explores how Wali pilgrimage tourism influences the formation of pilgrims' attitudes toward charity in East Java. This study aims to understand how the spiritual experiences and cultural values associated with the Wali pilgrimage site can shape pilgrims' socio-religious behavior. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation at key pilgrimage sites in East Java. The findings reveal that Wali pilgrimage tourism is not only a form of religious fulfillment but also enhances pilgrims' awareness and commitment to charity through almsgiving. The management of pilgrimage sites that blend Islamic values with local culture plays a crucial role in fostering a spiritual environment conducive to generosity. Local leaders and community figures serve as catalysts in reinforcing social and religious values that promote community solidarity. This research highlights the significance of spiritual tourism as a tool for cultivating positive social attitudes and offers insights for the sustainable development of religious tourism in Indonesia. Consequently, ongoing efforts to strengthen spiritual and social values within pilgrimage tourism are essential to maximize its positive community impact.

Abstract

Teaching the concept of divinity in Islam, which tends to be abstract, to preschool children is a challenge, given their immature cognitive modalities. To this end, this article explores teachers' approaches and narrative models used in providing divinity education to Muslim children. Semi-structured interviews with Muslim teachers who have more than one year of experience teaching preschool children show that the approaches and narrative models used by the teachers vary widely and tend to be eclectic. Teachers tend to introduce and relate children to the concept of divinity through habituation and religious terms rather than teaching the concept of divinity in detail to children. The approaches used by teachers are linguistic and habituation approaches. The narratives used are body analogies, natural phenomena, simple associations, and chants or nadzam (Arabic poetry) that are recited and memorized together. These findings make an important contribution to the development of contextualized and developmentally appropriate divinity education methods in an Islamic cultural environment.
