Abstract

Functional dyspepsia is an upper gastrointestinal disorder characterized by epigastric pain or discomfort that may affect patients’ comfort. The high burden of dyspeptic symptoms and the need for non-pharmacological approaches highlight the importance of developing accessible complementary therapies. Zhongwan (CV-12) is traditionally associated with gastric and digestive function; however, empirical evidence regarding its application for functional dyspepsia remains limited. This study aimed to determine changes in functional dyspepsia following acupuncture therapy at the Zhongwan point at the Independent Midwife Practice of Ni Made Sinarsari. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was used involving 28 respondents selected through purposive sampling. Acupuncture was administered twice weekly for four weeks, totaling eight sessions. Data were collected using the Rome IV Criteria and Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), and analyzed using the McNemar test and Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test with a significance level of p < 0.05. Before treatment, all respondents (100%) met the criteria for functional dyspepsia. After treatment, 22 respondents (79%) no longer met the criteria, while 6 respondents (21%) remained positive (p = 0.000). The mean number of symptoms decreased from 3.85 ± 1.60 to 2.60 ± 1.25 (p = 0.000), accompanied by reduced pain intensity. Acupuncture at the Zhongwan point showed significant changes in dyspeptic symptoms and pain intensity and may be considered as a complementary approach for managing functional dyspepsia.

Abstract

Acne is a common skin disorder that is often associated with the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes. Centella asiatica and Jasminum sambac contain bioactive compounds with potential antibacterial properties. This study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical quality and antibacterial activity of traditional face masks formulated from Centella asiatica, Jasminum sambac, and their combinations against P. acnes. The evaluations included organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, adhesiveness, drying time, stability, irritation, and in vitro antibacterial activity. This research employed five test formulations and two positive controls, comprising a commercially available anti-acne medication and a commercially available traditional anti-acne mask. The results showed that Formula 1, containing 30% Centella asiatica, 40% rice, and 30% oat, fulfilled all physicochemical quality requirements. However, the formulation did not demonstrate antibacterial activity against P. acnes. Further studies regarding its potential role in acne treatment are needed to support the development and application of this traditional face mask product.

Abstract

Patients after pulmonary tuberculosis treatment can still experience residual respiratory disorders that impact breathing comfort and functional capacity. Pranayama, a breath regulation technique in yoga, has the potential to be a complementary intervention to support respiratory rehabilitation. This study aims to describe the application of pranayama as a yoga-based intervention in rehabilitative nursing care for patients after pulmonary tuberculosis treatment. This study used a comparative case study design on two post-pulmonary tuberculosis patients in the Waingapu Community Health Center, East Sumba Regency, in April 2026. Patients were selected purposively based on the criteria of having completed at least six months of tuberculosis treatment, experiencing residual respiratory symptoms, and being in a stable clinical condition. The intervention, in the form of pranayama exercises, was carried out for five sessions (30–45 minutes per session) which included demonstrations, guided exercises, and independent exercises. Data were obtained through nursing assessments, observations, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed descriptively and comparatively. Both patients showed improvements in breathing comfort, ability to control breathing patterns, and independence in performing pranayama exercises after the intervention. Despite variations in response to the exercise, all respondents demonstrated improved activity tolerance and ability to perform the exercises independently, tailored to their individual conditions. Pranayama has the potential to be a safe and easily implemented yoga-based complementary nursing intervention in the rehabilitation of post-pulmonary tuberculosis patients, supporting the recovery of respiratory function and increasing patient independence in managing their health.

Abstract

Śaṅkarācārya’s commentary on the definition of yoga in Kaṭha Upaniṣad II.3.10-11 has received limited scholarly attention within the framework of Advaita Vedānta, despite the mantra’s explicit definition of yoga as sthirām indriyadhāraṇām, the steady restraint of the senses. This study employs a qualitative library research method, drawing primary data from Swami Gambhirananda’s English translation of the Śaṅkarabhāṣya and applying K. Satchidananda Murty’s Vedic hermeneutics, which treats Vedic texts as contextual and open to a plurality of interpretations within their respective philosophical frameworks. The analysis shows that Śaṅkarācārya constructs yoga as viyoga, a severance of the senses, mind, and intellect (buddhi) from external objects rooted in ignorance (avidyā), so that the etymological sense of “union” emerges as a consequence of this severance rather than as its literal meaning. The resulting stillness of the senses functions as the ground for the disclosure of self-knowledge (ātma-jñāna), provided that vigilance (apramāda) is sustained, since the state of yoga is described as inherently fluctuating. Yoga therefore occupies the position of sādhana, a preparatory discipline, while final liberation continues to rest on the realization of self-knowledge itself. These findings clarify the epistemological function assigned to yoga within Śaṅkarācārya’s Advaita Vedānta and contribute to the broader academic discourse on the diverse meanings of yoga in Hindu literature.

Abstract

Nutritional problems among children under five remain a public health challenge in Indonesia, including in Klungkung Regency, Bali. Acupressure is a complementary therapy that may help improve appetite in children under five with nutritional problems through stimulation of specific meridian points. This study aimed to evaluate changes in anthropometric indicators and appetite before and after an acupressure intervention among children under five with nutritional problems at Klungkung II Public Health Center. A quantitative approach with a pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was employed, involving 32 children under five with nutritional problems selected through purposive sampling. The acupressure intervention was administered at five points—ST36 (Zusanli), CV12 (Zhongwan), SP3 (Taibai), SP6 (Sanyinjiao), and ST25 (Tianshu)—in three sessions lasting 10–15 minutes each over a three-week period. Body weight and height were analyzed using paired-samples t-tests, whereas z-scores and appetite scores were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. The results showed that mean body weight increased from 10.94 kg to 11.52 kg and mean height from 89.53 cm to 90.35 cm after the intervention. The mean weight-for-age z-score increased from −2.36 to −1.74, while the mean height-for-age z-score increased from −2.02 to −1.69. Appetite scores also increased from 24.68 to 33.15. Differences between pre- and post-intervention measurements were statistically significant for all indicators (p < 0.001). These findings indicate differences between pre- and post-intervention conditions; however, the observed changes cannot be fully attributed to acupressure because the study did not include a control group.

Abstract

Gout requires sustained urate control, whereas evidence on acupuncture-related changes in urate biomarkers remains inconsistent. This study examined pre-post changes in blood uric acid across three sessions of Garuda Indonesia (GI) Acupuncture using a single-group repeated-measures design. Complete data were available for 24 participants aged 20–58 years (mean 35.2±10.3 years), comprising 15 females (62.5%) and 9 males (37.5%). The three sessions were separated by 6-day intervals, and uric acid was measured 30 minutes before and 10 minutes after each session using an EasyTouch® GCU ET-301 with capillary whole blood. Analyses included descriptive statistics, a linear mixed-effects model, paired t-tests with Holm adjustment, Wilcoxon sensitivity analyses, and Cohen’s dz. Mean values changed from 6.16±1.78 to 5.85±1.63 mg/dL in Session 1, 6.19±1.50 to 5.86±1.33 mg/dL in Session 2, and 6.00±1.60 to 5.73±1.44 mg/dL in Session 3. The corresponding mean reductions were 0.304 mg/dL (95% CI 0.116–0.492), 0.325 mg/dL (95% CI 0.150–0.500), and 0.271 mg/dL (95% CI 0.098–0.444). The mixed model estimated an overall reduction of 0.300 mg/dL (95% CI 0.204–0.396; p<0.001), with no evidence that the pre-post effect differed across sessions (interaction p=0.901). In each session, 19 of 24 participants showed a decrease. The pattern was statistically consistent, but the absolute change was small and reflects only a very short-term change assessed 10 minutes after each session. Because the study had no control group, recruitment procedures were incompletely documented, hydration was not standardized, comorbidities were not collected systematically, and renal function was not assessed, the findings remain exploratory and do not establish causality or long-term gout control.

Abstract

Diarrhea remains a common health problem for which traditional medicine continues to play an important role, including the use of plants and natural materials based on locally transmitted knowledge. This study aimed to document and inventory plants and natural materials empirically used to help manage diarrhea among the Dayak Meratus community and to discuss their relevance from a natural-products pharmacology perspective. A descriptive qualitative design with an ethnomedicinal approach was employed. Data were collected through purposive interviews with two traditional healers, field observations, and documentation. The data were descriptively analyzed according to local names, plant parts used, preparation methods, and routes of administration. The study documented 13 types of plants or natural materials, which were administered orally or externally. Traditional preparations included pounding, heating, boiling, blending, short-term soaking in water, and direct use without processing. Notably, several materials were externally applied to the abdomen, while wawangun leaves were applied to the head despite being classified as a remedy for diarrhea. Among the identified materials, Psidium guajava L. had the strongest available pharmacological evidence supporting antidiarrheal activity. These findings indicate that Dayak Meratus ethnomedicinal knowledge may provide valuable preliminary information for generating pharmacological hypotheses and guiding further natural-products research.
