Creative product innovation is vital for empowering local economies and improving MSME competitiveness, especially in rural areas. This community service in Pematang Johar Village aimed to strengthen creativity, innovation, and digital marketing among 42 participants, including MSME owners, youth, and women entrepreneurs. Through workshops and mentoring based on Service-Learning and Participatory Action Research (PAR), participants improved by over 50% in product design, packaging, and digital promotion. They created culturally inspired prototypes and formed the Pematang Johar Creative MSME Forum to ensure continued collaboration. Abstract

Community service activities aim to improve understanding, skills, and confidence in utilizing digital technology and managing business finances effectively. Empowerment activities aim to create independent, resilient, innovative, and sustainable women entrepreneurs, so that they can have a positive impact on family welfare and the broader village economy. In Pematang Johar Village, weak digital literacy and poor financial management have caused many village women's businesses to stagnate, even at risk of stopping midway. Through intensive training and mentoring provided, the implementation team introduced and trained digital marketing and financial management according to the needs of the Village. The implementation methods included observation, digital marketing training, business financial management training, mentoring, and program evaluation. The results of the activities showed a significant increase in the understanding of digital marketing and business financial management. The activities are expected to improve product promotion and more organized financial management for women in Pematang Johar Village. Integrated empowerment is important to support sustainable businesses.

Abstract

Rural areas with natural potential and agrarian atmosphere such as Pematang Johar Village present opportunities to be developed into sustainable tourism destinations. However, limitations in lodging facilities and lack of environmentally friendly practices become obstacles in optimizing that potential. Therefore, this community-service activity aims to design and assist the implementation of eco-friendly homestays and lodgings as a new tourist attraction in the village. The implementation methods consist of initial observation and problem identification, training and assistance for lodging managers/owners and community members, and post-implementation evaluation. The results show increased environmental awareness among homestay managers and the community, evidenced by improved building design using local/natural materials, implementation of waste management systems and greening the environment, and establishment of environmentally friendly homestay service standards. These findings indicate that eco-friendly homestay development can serve as an alternative lodging option that strengthens the village’s tourism appeal while supporting environmental preservation and community empowerment. Thus, environmentally conscious lodging innovation is worthy to be adopted as a sustainable tourism model in Pematang Johar Village, with a recommendation that management continues participatively and receives support from the village authority for sustainability.

Abstract

Pematang Johar Village is one of the agricultural villages with abundant rice production. However, a portion of the harvest results in low-quality rice such as broken grains, dull color, and leftover rice from daily consumption. This problem leads to economic inefficiency and increased food waste. Through this community service program, a new value chain innovation was introduced by processing rice waste into rice crackers. This innovation was chosen because of easily available raw materials, cultural consumption habits, and its potential to reduce food waste while creating local culinary identity. The production process is simple, low-cost, and offers wide marketing opportunities both online and offline. The program results show an increase in community knowledge and skills, establishment of a small business group, and the birth of a new culinary identity for Pematang Johar Village.

Abstract

Digital transformation is increasingly crucial for tourism villages in Indonesia as tourist behavior shifts toward digital technology for travel decisions. However, many villages remain behind in digital literacy and online marketing skills. Pematang Johar Tourism Village in Deli Serdang Regency, North Sumatra, exemplifies this challenge. Despite its strong agricultural and cultural potential, it struggles to promote itself effectively due to limited human resources, inadequate infrastructure, and minimal understanding of digital marketing strategies. To address these gaps, a community service program emphasizing digitalization training and mentoring was implemented. The program focused on improving digital literacy, developing creative promotional content, and utilizing social media as a marketing tool. Through participatory and hands-on learning, participants enhanced their ability to create engaging digital content, manage social media platforms, and highlight local cultural values in promotions. The #ExplorePematangJohar campaign further boosted the village’s online visibility and digital identity.
