Abstract

This study aims to uncover the moral and spiritual meanings contained in Hasan Abdullah Sahal's nasyid Firru Ilallah using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach. This work was chosen because it implies strong da'wah values and presents a profound Islamic reflection through a combination of lyrics, tunes, and meaningful musical symbols. The nasyid not only functions as a medium for religious entertainment, but also as a means of conveying a moral message that directs humans to return to God and realize the true nature of life. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with a two-stage semiotic analysis according to Roland Barthes, namely denotative, connotative, and mythical meanings. The primary data in this study are nasyid lyric texts that are analyzed based on the structure of signs and the context of the meanings that appear in them. The results show that at the denotative level, the lyrics depict a call to return to God through an awareness of human sin, weakness, and limitations. At the connotative level, the nasyid presents a moral message about the importance of repentance, humility, and recognition of human dependence on God. Meanwhile, at the mythical level, a construction of spiritual values is found that emphasizes the concept of human nature and the spiritual journey toward the perfection of faith. Overall, the nasyid Firru Ilallah is not only a work of religious art but also serves as an effective medium for preaching, awakening moral, spiritual, and Islamic values in its listeners.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze illocutionary speech acts in the film N?qah by Meshal Aljaser using pragmatic studies and John R. Searle's speech act theory. This study is a descriptive qualitative study with data in the form of dialogues in the film N?qah. The data collection techniques used are listening, documentation, and note-taking techniques. Data analysis is carried out through the process of identification, classification, and description based on the categories of speech acts proposed by Searle. The results of the study indicate that there are three types of illocutionary speech acts, namely assertive speech acts with four data, directive speech acts with five data, and expressive speech acts with two data. Assertive speech acts are used to convey information, opinions, and beliefs of the speaker. Directive speech acts are used to give orders, requests, prohibitions, and invitations. Meanwhile, expressive speech acts are used to express the feelings, attitudes, and emotional responses of the speaker. The findings of this study indicate that illocutionary speech acts have an important role in building interactions between characters, strengthening the communication context, and supporting the development of the storyline and character depiction in the film. This study also shows that pragmatic analysis of films can provide a deeper understanding of language functions, communication strategies, and the relationship between utterances, context, and speaker goals. This study enriches pragmatic research, particularly in the study of illocutionary speech acts.

Abstract

This study aims to describe and analyze the morphological forms and functions of derivation and inflection in the novel Ayah, Ini Arahnya ke Mana, Ya?. This study is motivated by the importance of understanding morphological processes in literary works, particularly how word formation contributes to meaning and language structure in narrative texts. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The research data source is the text of the novel Ayah, Ini Arahnya ke Mana, Ya?, and the data consist of words undergoing morphological processes of derivation and inflection. Data collection is carried out through listening and note-taking, and by carefully reading the text and noting the forms of words that undergo morphological processes. The collected data are analyzed using distributional methods to identify changes in word classes, affixation forms, and grammatical functions across language units. The results of the study show that the inflection process in the novel functions as a marker of grammatical relationships in sentences without changing the identity of the basic lexeme. The form of inflection is found in the use of affixes that mark certain grammatical aspects, so that the context of the sentence greatly influences their meaning.Meanwhile, the derivation process contributes to the formation of new words that may change word classes, such as verbs becoming nouns or adjectives. The meanings derived from the process reveal the formation of new semantic concepts that differ from their basic forms. Thus, these two morphological processes not only demonstrate the dynamics of word formation in Indonesian but also demonstrate linguistic functions that support the delivery of meaning in literary works.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the dynamics of the characters' hierarchy of needs in the film Miracle in Cell Number 7 through the perspective of Abraham Maslow's humanistic psychology. The film depicts the struggle of a father with intellectual disabilities who faces legal injustice while trying to maintain an emotional relationship with his daughter. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, employing content analysis of scenes, dialogue, and character expressions to represent the five levels of needs in Maslow's theory: physiological needs, safety, love and belonging, esteem, and self-actualization. The research data were obtained from the Indonesian version of the film Miracle in Cell Number 7 by Hanung Bramantyo and analyzed through coding, need classifications, and psychological interpretation of the characters. The results show that the need for love and belonging is the most dominant factor in shaping the main character's behavior and psychological resilience. Although the need for safety is not fully met due to legal pressure and social stigma, the character still maintains a sense of meaning in life, compassion, and self-esteem. In addition, the fulfillment of the character's needs is influenced by both internal factors, such as personality traits and intellectual limitations, and external factors, such as social support and environmental conditions. These findings indicate that the hierarchy of needs is flexible and contextual. Hence, a humanistic psychology approach is relevant for understanding the complexity of motivation and the psychological dynamics of the film's characters.

Abstract

This research examines two prominent elements: the ambivalence of Pangemanann's character and the metaphor of the "glass house." Criticism of colonization and authoritarian power is the strength of the novel Rumah Kaca. The strict surveillance system with the "glass house" model places the character Jacques Pangemanann as a colonial "puppet" to silence the colonized group. As a result, Minke, the postcolonialist, is killed, but behind this has emerged the meaning of postcoloniality that has gained a new form or perspective. Through a historical and postcolonial literary approach, this research presents memories of Indonesia's colonial history. It interprets the new model of Indonesian postcoloniality, shaped by the authoritarian strategy and the ambivalence of Pangemanann, a native who works for the colonial side. Rumah Kaca presents a historical narrative through the conflict between Pangemanann, who represents the colonial government, and Minke, a native of the colonized nation. Pangemanann's ambivalence stems from his being both the subject and the object of surveillance. The metaphor of a "glass house" alludes to the conditions of a colonized society that is strictly monitored by the state. The impact of this strict surveillance is the emergence of fear among the community and the death of Minke. The ambivalence of Pangemanann's character creates a new meaning in Indonesian postcoloniality. A new perspective emerges: postcoloniality is not about "who" but rather about "what" is carried. This meaning is emphasized through the metaphor of a "glass house." This metaphor refers to the condition of a colonized society, afraid because it is under surveillance by the colonial government. Moreover, this condition is actually carried out by a colonial agent, who is a native.

Abstract

The literacy crisis among elementary school children in Indonesia shows that reading ability is still limited to deciphering texts, without optimal contextual understanding. This condition is exacerbated by the dominant use of gadgets, which has shifted children's reading habits and social interactions. This study aims to analyze the implementation of storytelling as a dialogic literacy practice in a literacy ecosystem involving children, tutors, families, and the learning environment at the Rungkut Library in Surabaya. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative approach, involving in-depth interviews, participant observation, and documentation of six purposively selected informants. Data analysis used the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2014). The results showed that storytelling activities create a dialogic space that allows children to engage in narrative reconstruction through interactions with tutors and peers, thereby constructing meaning together through the communication process. The 5W+1H approach and story retelling have been shown to improve children's reading comprehension, oral communication skills, and self-confidence. Family involvement is a real supportive factor through the habit of storytelling at home, while excessive gadget use and inconsistent attendance are the main inhibiting factors. This study provides a conceptual contribution to storytelling as a social literacy practice in community-based non-formal education.

Abstract

Writing biographical texts requires students to organize a character's life story chronologically and in an informative manner, using appropriate linguistic rules. One important linguistic aspect of writing is morphology, especially the affixation process through prefixes. However, in practice, inaccuracies in the use of prefixes persist, necessitating analysis of students' morphological abilities. This study aims to identify the form and describe the meaning of prefixes in biographical texts written by high school students in Indramayu Regency. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The research data consist of sentences containing prefixes from students' biographical texts. The data sources come from 62 students in grades X-9 and X-10. Data collection techniques involve observation and documentation, while data analysis includes data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The study found six types of prefixes: me-, ber-, di-, ter-, pe-, and se-. The prefix me- is the most dominant, with 79 data points (43.89%), followed by ber- with 46 data points (25.56%). The prefixes di- and pe- each had 17 data points (9.44%), the prefix ter- had 13 data points (7.22%), and the prefix se- was the least used, with 8 data points (4.44%). In terms of form, the prefixes me-ber-, and pe- experienced allomorphic variations due to morphophonemic processes, while di-, ter-, and se- remained relatively constant. In terms of meaning, each prefix conveys a distinct grammatical function, such as expressing actions, conditions, actors, or levels. Students already have a basic understanding of the use of prefixes, but still need improvement to be more precise, varied, and contextual in their writing of biographical texts.

Abstract

Film, as a communication medium, serves not only as entertainment but also as a means of conveying social and humanitarian values. Darin J. Sallam's film Farha tells the story of a humanitarian tragedy set during the 1948 Nakba in Palestine. This study aims to uncover the representation of humanitarian facts and the author's worldview through a genetic structuralism approach. The method used is qualitative research with analytical descriptive techniques. Data were obtained through observation and note-taking of scenes, dialogues, and film subtitles, and then analyzed in stages of reduction, classification, and interpretation, based on the concepts of humanitarian facts and worldview. The results show that the film Farha contains two forms of humanitarian facts: individual and social. Individual facts are depicted through the inner experiences of the character Farha, including fear, loneliness, trauma, and the struggle for survival.Meanwhile, social facts are reflected in gender inequality, the loss of educational rights, military violence, and the collapse of humanitarian values due to war. In addition, Darin J. Sallam's worldview presents a humanistic perspective rooted in the collective historical experience of the Palestinian people, emphasizing the suffering and steadfastness of women and children as symbols of hope and resistance. The conclusion of this study shows that Farha's film not only represents a historical tragedy but also serves as a profound reflection on humanity, social justice, and the struggle for life. Through a genetic structuralist approach, this film is shown to be a manifestation of the relationship among literary works, social structures, and the author's worldview, informed by the historical reality of Palestinian society.
