Abstract

This study analyzes the social reflection in Egyptian society in Naguib Mahfouz's novel Al-Baqi Min Zamani Sa'ah, using Alan Swingewood's sociology of literature approach and Lewis's theory of conflict-causation factors. The method used is a descriptive, qualitative approach, employing note-taking techniques and content analysis of text excerpts representing Egyptian social reality between 1936 and 1979. This study answers two research questions: how are social reflections on history, ideological conflict, and intergenerational conflict represented in the novel, and what factors cause the ideological and intergenerational conflicts it reflects? The study's results reveal three main findings. First, the novel documents the partial and pluralistic social awareness of Egyptian society in its responses to historical events from the 1936 Agreement to the 1979 Camp David Agreement. Second, ideological fragmentation between secular nationalism, political Islam, and leftist groups not only occurs in the public sphere but also penetrates the domestic space of the family as an arena for value struggles. Third, uneven modernization triggers latent but persistent intergenerational tensions in family relations. Leuwis's theory explains these conflicts as being influenced by differences in values ??and beliefs, differing interests, socioeconomic disparities, and limited access to resources. This research confirms that the novel AMZS serves as both a sociohistorical archive and a sociocultural document, capturing the dynamics and social awareness of Egyptian society during four decades of political change.

Abstract

This research is motivated by listeners' limited understanding of the metaphorical meaning in Arabic song lyrics, which are rich in symbolism and figurative language and are often treated as aesthetic works rather than explored in depth. This research aims to examine the representation of love in the lyrics of Bessan Ismail's songs Khotya, Al-Harbein, and Metl Al-Amira through Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The method used is a descriptive qualitative method, with literature review techniques and purposive sampling as the basis for data collection. The analysis is carried out through three stages of meaning, namely denotation, connotation, and myth, by dissecting lexical meanings through the Arabic dictionary Al-Mu'jam Al-Wasith and referring to the concept of fragments in the book A Lover's Discourse. The results show that love is represented as a complex cultural ideology through five main mythical patterns: the sacredness of the lover, inner emptiness, total surrender, the beauty of wounds, and eternal love. The figurative language in the lyrics functions as a sign system that produces layered meanings while constructing the myth of love as the center of meaning in life, universally ideologized. Furthermore, Bessan Ismail's work demonstrates a harmonious blend of classical Arabic literary aesthetics and contemporary musical nuances, deepening the meaning and strengthening the perspective on depicting love. Theoretically, this research contributes to broadening the understanding of how song lyrics can naturalize certain ideologies through linguistic and symbolic sign systems, ultimately influencing the listener's perspective on emotional reality.

Abstract

This study examines diverse public perceptions of the Besentulak tradition in West Sedau Hamlet, stemming from a lack of philosophical understanding of the ritual instruments used. This absence of a complete meaning has implications for the emergence of diverse, even contradictory, interpretations within the community. Using Roland Barthes's semiotic approach, which includes analysis at the levels of denotation, connotation, and myth, this qualitative study aims to dissect the meanings of eleven ritual instruments positioned as the main lexia within the tradition's structure. Data collection was conducted through participant observation and in-depth interviews with traditional leaders and kiai, who serve as representatives of cultural and religious authority. The results of the study indicate that the ritual instruments in Besentulak function not merely as material objects, but as a system of signification capable of transforming physical objects into symbolic texts loaded with the ideology of salvation. At the connotative level, these instruments represent the values of monotheism, cosmic harmony, and total submission to Allah SWT. The conclusion of this study confirms that the besentulak devices serve as a cultural defense mechanism and an acculturation strategy for the Sasak people as they navigate social dynamics. The scientific contribution of this research lies in mapping meaning at the micro level, thereby strengthening the spiritual integrity of the tradition. However, this research is limited by its single geographic scope, so cross-regional comparative studies are needed to enrich future findings.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of the school environment on students' speaking skills at SMP Negeri Satap 12 Batu, Leppangeng Village, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. The background of this study is that students' speaking skills still pose problems, including a lack of fluency in expressing opinions, low self-confidence, and language use that is not fully in accordance with Indonesian language rules. These conditions are thought to be related to the school environment, which includes the learning atmosphere, social interactions, and learning facilities. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational-causal research design. The study population and sample consisted of 43 students, using a total sampling technique. Data collection was carried out through questionnaires, observations, interviews, and documentation. The data obtained were analyzed using the Pearson product-moment correlation test and simple linear regression. The results of the study indicate a positive and significant relationship between the school environment and students' speaking skills, with a correlation value of 0.395 and a significance of 0.009 (<0.05). The results of the regression test indicate that the school environment accounts for 15.6% of students' speaking skills, while factors outside the study influence 84.4%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the school environment has a low-to-moderate influence on students' speaking skills. Therefore, efforts are needed to create a more conducive school environment to enable students' speaking skills to develop optimally.

Abstract

Narrative writing skills are important for elementary school students, but many still struggle to develop ideas, organize plots, and use language appropriately. This problem is also influenced by the use of less varied, less interesting learning media. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the effect of using wall magazines (mading) on students' narrative text-writing skills. This study uses a quantitative, quasi-experimental approach with a One-Group Pretest–Posttest design. The study subjects were 27 students in grades III and IV of SD Negeri Satap 12 Batu, Leppangeng Village, selected using a total sampling technique. The research instruments were narrative text writing and documentation tests, and data analysis used descriptive and inferential statistics, including paired-samples t-tests. The results showed a difference in students' average scores, from 56.48 on the pretest to 80.00 on the posttest, as well as a change in learning completeness from 7.41% to 100%. The results of the hypothesis test showed a p-value of 0.000 (<0.05), indicating a significant effect of wall magazine media on students' narrative writing skills. Thus, the use of wall magazine media has been shown to affect changes in elementary school students' narrative writing skills and can serve as an innovative learning medium.

Abstract

Character education in elementary schools is an important aspect in shaping students' attitudes and behavior. However, in practice, learning still tends to emphasize cognitive aspects rather than to strengthen character values in context. This condition indicates the need for integrating character values into the learning process, especially in Indonesian language learning. This study aims to describe the application of the local folktale Nene' Mallomo as a medium for character building in Indonesian language learning, and to analyze the characters that emerge among students based on Thomas Lickona's theory. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The study's subjects were fifth-grade students at UPT SD Negeri 04 Benteng. Data collection techniques included observing the learning process, observing student character, conducting interviews, and documenting. The results showed that the folktale was applied across the opening, core, and closing learning stages, with strategies such as listening to and watching the story, character-value discussions, reflection, and case studies using sticky notes. The application includes three aspects of Lickona's character: moral knowing through question-and-answer activities and moral value analysis; moral feeling through student responses that show admiration for the character's firmness in upholding justice; and moral action through habituating students' moral attitudes and decision-making in the case study. Character traits evident in students include honesty, responsibility, fairness, respect for others, social awareness, and hard work. Therefore, local folklore can be used as a medium for Indonesian language learning to support character development in elementary schools.

Abstract

Poetry writing instruction at the junior high school level still tends to be mechanical. It does not accommodate students' exploration of emotions and personal experiences, resulting in low-quality poetic expression. Therefore, learning media are needed that can activate students' affective aspects before the writing process. This study is based on the Stimulus-Organism-Response (SOR) theory, which holds that students' learning responses are influenced by stimuli processed through internal conditions, especially emotions and imagination. This study aims to examine the effect of using emotional stimulus sheets on students' poetry writing abilities. This study used a quantitative, quasi-experimental, one-group pretest–posttest design. The research sample comprised 20 students from class VIII A at Muhammadiyah Rappang Junior High School. Data were collected via a poetry-writing test and analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality tests, and paired t-tests. The results showed that the average score for students' poetry-writing abilities increased from 54.05 in the pretest to 73.45 in the posttest. The results of the paired t-test showed a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05) and a t-value of -6.228, indicating a significant difference between before and after treatment. The use of emotional stimulus sheets significantly improved students' poetry-writing skills. This media is an effective, affect-based learning tool that can activate students' emotions, imagination, and personal experiences, resulting in more expressive and meaningful poetry.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the rhyme, rhythm, and moral message in the qafiyah poem "ba" by Umru' al-Qais through the approach of 'arudh and qawafi sciences. This study is motivated by the importance of understanding the relationship between the sound structure of classical Arabic poems and their meanings. The poem by Umru' al-Qais was chosen because it is one of the most important works in Jahiliyah Arabic literature, with high aesthetic value and rich linguistic and moral elements. The study uses a descriptive qualitative approach, with data sources consisting of poems from the diwan of Umru' al-Qais. The analysis was carried out by examining the bahar pattern, taf'ilah, changes in zihaf, and the qafiyah structure in eight verses of the poem, then connecting them to the moral message in each verse. The results of the study show that the poem consistently uses bahar thawil with various changes in taf'ilah, especially in the form of zihaf qabadh, which affects its rhythm and musicality. The qafiyah structure is dominated by the qafiyah muthlaqah form, with the rawi letter "ba" followed by the washl letter "ya", resulting in a strong harmony of sound. In addition to functioning as aesthetic elements, rhyme and rhythm also play a role in emphasizing the delivery of meaning. The poem's moral messages include individual, social, and religious values, such as honesty about feelings, the importance of loyalty and trust in relationships, and awareness of human limitations in the face of destiny. Thus, this study demonstrates the integration of sound structure and meaning, enriching the study of classical Arabic literature.

Abstract

Literature learning in elementary schools plays an important role in developing students' creativity, language sensitivity, and emotional expression. One effective literary activity to foster these abilities is writing poetry. This study aims to describe the aesthetic elements in name-based poems written by upper-grade students at UPT SD Negeri 10 Otting, particularly in figures of speech, diction, and rhyme. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach, with data drawn from 41 name-based acrostic poems written by students in grades IV, V, and VI. Data were obtained through documentation, observation, and interviews, and analyzed through the stages of reduction, presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that students' poems were dominated by figures of speech (jaja), such as comparison, affirmation, metaphor, and personification, with hyperbole and simile as the next most frequent figures. The diction used tended to be simple and communicative, dominated by abstract, emotive, and motivational words that reflected the students' experiences and world, with limited use of figurative and religious diction. Furthermore, in terms of rhyme, students generally use assonance (repetition of vowel sounds) that occurs naturally, although it is not yet consistently structured or in a fixed pattern. These findings indicate that the name-based acrostic technique effectively encourages students' creativity, self-expression, and awareness of aesthetic language in training literacy skills, especially in reading, writing, and understanding language meaning.
