Abstract

This study is motivated by the researcher’s interest in the healing practices of Ustadz Akiluddin in Mamben Daya Village, Wanasaba District. Generally, the Qur’an is used for reading, memorization, and as a guide for life. However, in this case, some members of the community use it as a means of healing. This alternative treatment has gained attention as many people seek other options after conventional medical treatments fail to bring improvement. One such alternative involves the use of Qur’anic verses combined with herbal remedies. Based on this background, the researcher formulated two research questions: (1) How is the healing practice using Qur’anic verses conducted, and which verses are used as a medium for healing by Ustadz Akiluddin? (2) What are the community’s perceptions of Ustadz Akiluddin’s healing practice, and what factors influence people to choose this method? This study is a Living Qur’an research employing a qualitative descriptive approach. The primary data sources are interviews with Ustadz Akiluddin and community members who are currently undergoing treatment or have been treated by him. Secondary data sources include books, journals, articles, theses, and other references related to this topic. The data collection techniques used in this research are observation, interviews, and documentation. The collected data were then analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that Ustadz Akiluddin treats certain common illnesses using verses from the Qur’an, along with other mediums such as water that has been inscribed with symbols and prayers, honey, young coconut, and various other herbal plants. The researcher also found that a portion of the community believes that Qur’anic verses can be used as a cure for all kinds of diseases. Factors that encourage people to choose this healing method include social influences and the specific conditions of the local community.

Abstract

The idea of religious pluralism shows each group respecting and tolerant of each other and religious inclusivism which emphasizes that all religions have the same value of truth, is present as one of the resolutions to the problems of differences in religious views. However, it turns out that some implementations of these ideas actually seem to be forcing and going beyond the limits, such as a group of Muslims who play Marais and sing the Prophet’s prayers during the inauguration of a church or a priest who chants prayers during a church mass ceremony. This article aims to limit the implementation of the idea of religious pluralism and religious inclusivism using the argument of Q.S. Al-Kafirun: 6 “For you your religion and for me my religion”. The data collection technique in this study uses a literature study excavated from interpretation books as primary sources and research articles and books as secondary sources so that it can be concluded into a type of descriptive-analytical-qualitative research. The results of the analysis show that Islam recognizes religious diversity as part of the sunnatullah, but does not justify actions that lead to syncretism which has the potential to blur religious identity. This study contributes to enriching the discourse of religious pluralism and religious inclusivism in Indonesia regarding the importance of maintaining a balance between respecting religious differences while maintaining the essence of the teachings of each perspective of the interpretation of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This study examines the phrase īz qāla and its derivations in Surah Al-Baqarah. This phrase is commonly used as an introductory expression in important stories or events in the Qur’an, typically referring to Allah or His prophets delivering a message or teaching. The focus of this study is on the interpretation of how the phrase īz qāla and its various derivations appear in Surah Al-Baqarah. The researcher employed a library research methodology with a linguistic approach, leading to the finding that the phrase īz qāla and its various derivations in Surah Al-Baqarah all take the form of īz ẓarfiyyah. However, in this phrase, īz often indicates an event (maf’ūl bih) and carries a command to pay attention to the event described. The interpretation differs when īz qāla occurs in the middle of a verse, where there are various opinions regarding the meaning of īz in this context.

Abstract

The systematic arrangement of the Qur’an has raised pros and cons among Western academies regarding its coherence. This research examines the structure of Sūrah al-Fajr as a response to orientalist criticism, which argues that the structure of the verses is not connected. By using the theoretical framework of Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric, this research aims to confirm the relationship of the verses in Sūrah al-Fajr to show the accuracy of their arrangement, as well as to find the relationship between Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric in explaining the structure of the Sūrah. This library research uses a qualitative approach and descriptive-comparative methods in analyzing data. As a result, all the verses in Sūrah al-Fajr have been proven to be well structured and coherent based on Munāsabah and Semitic Rhetoric. Both can emphasize the structure of the Sūrah, although in different ways. Munāsabah emphasizes the linear connection of verses in a Sūrah, while Semitic Rhetoric explains the structure at each level of the text. In this way, Orientalist criticism regarding the composition of the Sūrah can be refuted.

Abstract

In the contemporary era, the infiltration of non-authentic narratives has permeated the discourse of Qur’anic interpretation. This phenomenon poses significant challenges. This article addresses the issue of how the story of Harūt and Mārūt has been infiltrated by data sources and has the potential to distort the divine meaning, as well as how al-dakhil plays a role in the epistemology of da’wah. The main objective of this study is to analyse the dialectical relationship of al-dakhīl in the interpretation of Mafātīḥ Al-Ġaib, focusing on the impact of this fictional infiltration narrative on Islamic da’wah discourse. To achieve this, a qualitative method encompassing a comprehensive review of literature and interpretations related to the story of Harūt and Mārūt serves as the foundation of the research methodology. The results of this study indicate that the spread of infiltrative narratives without preventive measures can lead to the degradation of fundamental Islamic values. These findings underscore the need for a responsible approach in explaining Islamic teachings. In another dimension, this article advocates for the validation of sources and the promotion of accurate interpretations. Ultimately, this research contributes to the ongoing discourse in the world of Qur’anic interpretation by emphasizing the importance of preserving authentic Islamic teachings in an increasingly contemporary world.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the understanding and implementation of the Qur'anic verses about bees and honey, specifically Surah An-Nahl verses 68–69, by Trigona Itama beekeepers in Sei Gohong Village, Palangka Raya. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method, with data collection techniques including direct observation, interviews, and field documentation. The results show that the beekeepers understand and implement the Qur'anic verses about bees and honey as a guide for their beekeeping activities, not merely as religious knowledge. They apply this understanding by constructing beehives, selecting locations that support the ecosystem, providing natural food sources, harvesting honey properly, and sharing knowledge with the community. This study contributes new insights to the field of Living Qur'an studies, particularly on how the Qur'anic verses about nature can be applied in real-life practices. It is hoped that these findings can inspire the development of similar initiatives in other regions and open opportunities for further research on the application of Qur'anic verses in community life.

Abstract

The visualization of the houris in the Qur’an is described as hur ‘in, women with beautiful eyes and clear skin like hidden pearls. They are portrayed as shy, loyal, and eternally youthful. This imagery reflects the social construction of gender that influences classical interpretations, particularly in Tafsir Ath-Thabari. This study analyzes Ath-Thabari’s interpretation of the concept of houris in paradise and re-examines it through the lens of Judith Butler’s theory of gender as a social construct. Butler asserts that gender is not a fixed biological category but a social construct shaped by culture, language, and discourse. The interpretation of houris is not merely textual but also shaped by the patriarchal gender norms prevalent at the time the interpretation was formulated. This research employs a literature review method with a descriptive and linguistic analysis approach to the Qur’anic verses and Ath-Thabari’s exegesis. The findings reveal that Ath-Thabari interprets the houris literally, emphasizing their physical and sensual attributes as a form of pleasure for faithful men. The depiction of houris with large, beautiful eyes, ideal body shapes, and pure white skin reflects the classical Arab standards of beauty. From Butler’s perspective, such interpretations are cultural constructions that reproduce gender hierarchies, rather than representing absolute realities.

Abstract

This article analyzes Ismail Al-Ascholy’s interaction patterns on his Instagram account @ismailascholy, focusing on the formation of interpretive authority in digital dakwah. This study uses a netnography approach to examine the interaction between Ismail Al-Ascholy and his followers, as well as Max Weber’s authority framework to explore the types of authority he possesses. The analysis reveals that Ismail Al-Ascholy embodies traditional and charismatic religious authority. His traditional authority stems from cultural legitimacy through his lineage as a descendant of Kyai Khalil Bangkalan, a prominent religious scholar, and his position as the leader of a pesantren. His charismatic authority is formed through personal appeal via persuasive communication style, emotionally resonant spiritual narratives, and direct interactions that build trust and strengthen his charisma on social media. Using a netnographic approach, it was found that interactions on the Instagram account @ismailascholy are participatory and interactive, where followers actively contribute to interpretive discourse. Followers engage in discussions, question and answer sessions, and the dissemination of tafsir content. These findings indicate that digital dakwah is changing religious relationship patterns, where the authority of tafsir is not only determined by traditional religious structures but also by social dynamics that develop in virtual spaces, creating an authority that is more flexible and responsive to the needs of followers.

Abstract

The central idea in Islam is Īṡār, which expresses the mindset of prioritizing the needs of others above one’s own. The purpose of this study is to thoroughly understand the meaning of Īṡār in the Qur’an, investigate the historical background of its use, and relate it to the relevance of contemporary society. The method used is thematic interpretation (maudhu’i) with a qualitative approach, sourced from books, scientific journals, and turās books left by scholars, such as Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Tafsir Al-Azhar, and Tafsir Al-Misbah. Specifically, verses related to the meaning of Īṡār, such as QS. Al-Hasyr verse 9. Īṡār combines components of preference, priority, and superiority offered to others, reflecting the values of sacrifice, empathy, and social solidarity. According to the research findings, Īṡār implies prioritizing the needs of others above oneself, rejecting evil, and offering benefits. There are two types of Qur’anic verses related to Īṡār: those that explicitly use the word asāra or its derivatives, and those that subtly convey the values or principles of Īṡār. The implication of this research is to make a positive contribution to the development of a more socially just, compassionate, and equitable society by instilling the values of solidarity, social concern, and sacrifice for the common good.
