IJOLEH: INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF EDUCATION AND HUMANITIES is a scientific journal published biannually in May and November. IJOLEH seeks to develop knowledge and practice in the three domains of its title (Language, Education, and Humanities) and the relations between them. It welcomes research articles, literature reviews, and position papers dealing with any languages (mother tongues, global English, indigenous, minority, heritage, and endangered languages), as well as any educational disciplines, and Humanities. IJOLEH encourages submissions from a variety of disciplinary approaches. It also opens for studies into cultural content, literacy, intercultural and transnational investigations. Contrastive analysis is very important for learning second language acquisition because with knowing the difference and the similarities L1 and L2 that the learner became easy to learn the L2. The research aimed to analyze the simaliries and the differences between Makassarese as L1 and English as L2 in adverbs of time. This study applied a qualitative study to cover the problem. First, the researcher collected the data from books on Makassarese grammar, Buginese Grammar, English grammar and from the researcher as the native speaker of Makassarese. Second, the researcher identified them in every type of adverbs. At last, data were analyzed from the data collection. The finding of the research indicates that; the researcher found all of the adverbs. After analyzing the data, the researcher found the similarities and the differences with comparing both of them. Thus, the researcher can find the Similarities based on functions both Makassares as L1 and English as L2, to explain some wors namely, verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. Based on the position, both can be placed in front, middle and end. Differences based on functions can be found that English has sentence sentences that use many words ending in -ed + -ly. Based on tenses, in English context, the verbs should be changed based on the tenses, for example, go (present V1+es/s), went (Past Verb2), and go (Future will/shal+V1). Besides that, the researcher can know without an adverb of time in the sentence when the situation is happening only see the verb in the sentence. But in Makassares context, the researcher cannot identify the sentence without adverb of time when the action is happening.

English as English as Foreign Language (EFL) in Indonesia makes the learners get the difficulties in exposing themselves to Native English Speakers (NESs) environment. Hence, EFL learners in Indonesia are only exposed to the Non-Native English Speakers (NNESs) condition that make use English as Lingua Franca (ELF) when talking using English. Furthermore, in using ELF, the learners should engage all context in their mind to smoothen the communication built using ELF. The context that the learners have is core context regarding their First Language (L1) instead of NESs. Hence, in the communication running, the learners attach emergent context in order to overcome the miss-communication found in the conversation. In order to see the process of emergent context, this study in “analyzing context in ELF: A Discourse Analysis in Indonesian Higher Education Institution (HEI)” is run by using discourse analysis on corpus data taken from two HEIs learners’ conversation in Indonesia. The data taken is analyzed, and the result is divided into reformulation and given/new. Furthermore, based on reformulation and given/new categories, it is shown that context especially Emergent context is appeared in two ELF used situation. They are in learning and in communication using ELF.

This study analyzes the novel that entitled The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Based on the novel, the character tries to do anything to get their happiness such as wasting their money for unimportant things which is called hedonism. This study aimed to analyze the representative of hedonism ideology and the culture in New York in 1920s in the Great Gatsby novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The theories that are used in this study are hedonism theory. This study uses sociological approach and library research which takes some information related to the research problems from books and other literatures to gather the data. The result of the analysis to answer the first research problem shows that from seven kinds of hedonism, there are two kinds that are found by researchers in this study; Hedonistic Egoism, and Hedonistic Utilitarianism. The first kind is Hedonistic Egoism that can be seen when Tom and Daisy move to another city and let Gatsby clean up the mess that they have made. The last kind is Hedonistic Utilitarianism that can be seen when Gatsby often holds parties for anyone.

The aim of the research is to analyze the role of sociology teachers in implementing character education through learning at school of Makassar. This type of research used descriptive qualitative research namely to analyze solutions to existing problems based on data, presenting data, analyzing and interpreting. Research informants were determined by purposive sampling technique consisting of the principal (curriculum section), Sociology teachers in grades X, XI, XII, and students who were registered as social studies students. Data collection techniques were observation, interviews and documentation. Data analysis techniques were data use, data reduction, data presentation and conclusion.The results showed that the role of the sociology teacher in implementing character education through learning was as follows; Inserting moral messages in learning that are associated with learning materials, Linking the material with social phenomena that exist in society, Applying learning models that can foster a sense of empathy, and responsibility, Providing exemplary for students such as arriving on time, not smoking, throwing trash in its place and caring for others, Cooperating with guidance counseling and students' parents. As conclusion that character education can be implemented through learning in schools and sociology teachers have role in implementing character education.

This study aimed to improve students’ mastery of pronunciation through words spelling strategies in the fourth grade of SD Inpres Mappu in Mamuju. This research was a classroom action research (CAR) conducted in two cycles, namely, cycle one and cycle 2. Each cycle was carried out four times. There are four steps in this research; planning, action, observation, and reflection. The data in this study used quantitative (test) as the primary data and qualitative (field notes, recording, and documentation) as supporting data. The subjects in this study were 15 students in grade IV SD Inpres Mappu in Mamuju. The results showed that the use of the Words Spelling Strategy succeeded in improving the pronunciation master of the fourth-grade students of SD Inpres Mappu. It can be seen from the increased percentage of student learning outcomes from cycle I to cycle II, with an average value of 83.6. Therefore, it can be conducted that using the Words Spelling Strategy can improve student learning outcomes in mastering pronunciation.

Pesta sekolah or known wuat wa’I ritual is a form to support and the togetherness from the Manggarai community to help others who have difficulties in funding their son and girl in education. The purpose of this research is to find out why the wuat wa’I ritual culture has been survive until now in Golo Lebo Village. The research used qualitative type in a descriptive approach. Determination of informants in this study using snowball sampling technique. The symbol used during the event (prayer) is to slaughter a white chicken as an offering. The meat was eaten together and the inside is put in a container and then given to the ancestors as a symbol that they are also present at the ceremony and always guide the prospective nomad, and that hope can be symbolized by the expression lalong bakok du lakom lalong rombeng du kolem which means to go with a hope that the return will bring success. And if they finished college later, a thanksgiving event will also be held by slaughtering a black chicken as an expression of gratitude and gratitude to God and the ancestors who had protected and guided them while completing their studies in out of their land. In wuat wa'i ritual in an attitude of solidarity is manifested which is not hindered by certain forms of diversity. All community groups are present together to help the parties concerned. As conclusion that Wuat wa'i is very well known by the wider community in Manggarai. Because it is not told orally and handed down from generation to generation, but all people, from young children to adults are always involved in the wuat wa'i event.

The study of hedging phenomenon is updating, indicating that the essence and interest take the attention among the researchers especially in the researchers from Indonesia. This research aimed to examine hedging system of modal auxiliary on English as Foreign Language (EFL) research papers. The present study investigated hedges system of research papers from the fields of EFL journal papers. It comprised 15 articles written by Indonesian writer-researchers taken from TEFLIN. The papers uploaded to lancsbox 6,0, corpus software. The analysis is not relied on the software only, but also manual checked to see the context in measuring the hedging. This study Applied quantitative method, the data analysis reveals major results. The results show that EFL researchers utilized more hedges by 64 pttw. Hedges employed in the form of Modal auxiliary appeared as the most frequent hedge occurred in discipline. To conclude, EFL researchers of Indonesia is employing hedges to accommodate the claims.

This research aims to analyze various managerial strategies of teachers in instilling character education in children during the Covid-19 pandemic. Research methods of literature review by looking for theoretical references relevant to the case or problem found, namely the managerial strategy of the teacher in strengthening character with the aim as a consideration in choosing and determining the appropriate strategy to use in accordance with its effectiveness and the ability of the teacher to implement it. The results showed that some of the managerial strategies of teachers in strengthening character education are to choose various methods applied online and offline. Online character strengthening activities include the involvement of various innovations in online learning methods through various interesting content, interactive multimedia courseware, portfolios, whatsapp class groups, google classes, sevima delink, virtual applications such as zoom meeting, google meeting, local live TV, Youtube, social media management, e-learning system management, character control books (chacker characters), Character games, establishing intense communication over seluller phones. As conclusion that character strengthening that can be done offline is home visit, raport character, school on a certain day, curricular, extracurricular and co-curricular activities listed in the vision and mission of the curriculum, routine activities in school order, spontaneous activities in the rules, planned activities in school programs, transparency contained in the school order and report card and development of organizational activities.

This study aimed to determine the increase in sociological learning activities of students by applying the Time Token type Cooperative learning technique, this type of research used classroom action research (CAR), the subject of this research was class XI Social Science 1 students of SMA Negeri 10 Makassar, The total numbers of students were 29 students. Data were obtained through observation sheets of students’ activities during group work presentations from cycle I to cycle II, data analysis was carried out using scores based on reference assessments. Data shows that there is an increase in student learning activities after applying the Time Token Cooperative learning model. In class XI Ips1 students at SMA Negeri 10 Makassar, in cycle I 78.6 and cycle II 82.7. The conclusion of this study is that by applying the Cooperative Learning model of Time Token type, it can increase the sociology learning activities of students in class XI IPS 1 SMA Negeri 10 Makassar.

The research is aimed to investigate the relevance between the focused materials in the English Textbook “Headlines” for grade XII and the criteria demanded by Focal Point. This research used qualitative research. This study used content analysis as the methodology. Based on the findings of analyzing the content of the textbook "Headlines" for XII grade of high school, it is found that the textbook content only fulfilled the 11 (eleven) points criteria of the focal point with a total of 31 points from A, B, and C of relevancy and it even did not reach half of the total. Therefore, it can be concluded that the textbook's content and related activities should be redesigned by following the criteria of Focal Point.
