Abstract

Ectoparasites pose a significant threat to the health and productivity of vaname shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei) in aquaculture settings, particularly in tropical regions. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, intensity, and dominance of ectoparasites in vaname shrimp ponds in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. This study was conducted from March to May 2024 in vaname shrimp ponds in Padang Pariaman, West Sumatra. Sampling was carried out at five different pond stations, and water quality assessments were carried out. Ectoparasites were identified, and their prevalence, intensity, and dominance were measured. Station II had the highest prevalence (100%), intensity (69 ind/shrimp), and dominance of ectoparasites from all other observation stations. The dominant types of ectoparasites were Epystylis sp. (37.81%), Zootamnium sp. (18.65%), and Vorticella sp. (20.64%). Water quality at five Vaname shrimp pond stations showed significant variations, especially in pH, COD, and ammonia parameters, with some values exceeding the quality standard. Station V was identified as the most critical location with the highest COD (90.08 mg/l) and ammonia (0.188 mg/l) values and pH below the optimal threshold. It is important to implement better pond management strategies to improve shrimp health and productivity while minimizing the ectoparasites on aquaculture systems in tropical regions.Keywords:Vaname shrimpEctoparasitesAquaculture managementWater quality

Abstract

Mangroves plants such as Rhizophora apiculata are known to possess a diverse array of bioactive compounds with antioxidant and photoprotective properties. This study aimed to evaluate the anti-UV activity and bioactive composition of the ethyl acetate extract of R. apiculata leaves. The extraction was performed using the maceration method over 3 24 hours with ethyl acetate as the solvent. UV absorption was assessed using UV-Visible spectrophotometry, while compound identification was carried out through Gas ChromatographyMass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The extract exhibited significant UV absorption in the 290320 nm range, with Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values ranging from 2.5300.03 (low protection) to 37.0800.47 (high protection), indicating strong potential as a natural sunscreen agent. GC-MS analysis revealed several bioactive constituents, including lupeol, friedelan-3-one, cyclohexane-1,3,5-triphenyl, -tocopherol, and 1,3,5,7-cyclooctatetraenecompounds recognized for their UV-absorbing and antioxidant activities. Abstract

Anisakis spp. are parasites distributed worldwide that often infect marine fish species. This study investigated the prevalence, mean intensity, and Anisakis larvae species, and identified the allergenic potential of T. lepturus caught in the southern coasts of Yogyakarta, Indonesia. In total, 50 fish that were caught by the fishermen were measured for length and weight and examined for Anisakis larvae infection. The results showed that larvae were found in the abdominal cavity (87.03%), organs (7.95%), gonads (2.93%), and digestive systems (2.09%). The prevalence of Anisakis infection was high (64%), with a mean intensity of 7.47 larvae/fish. Molecular analysis revealed that the nematode was Anisakis typica. Therefore, it poses a potential health risk to humans. Consuming fish infected with Anisakis can cause allergic reactions even after the fish has been cooked. The identification was done through protein profile antigen detection of fish flesh, both infected and non-infected, using SDS-PAGE. In this study, the heating process was applied (60, 90, and 120) for 15 minutes. The result of allergenic potential detection from T. lepturus infected by Anisakis showed four protein bands correlated with Anisakis allergens Ani s 1 (24 kDa), Ani s 2 (97 kDa), Ani s 3 (41 kDa), and Ani s 7 (139 kDa) in all the infected fish, both fresh and processed.Keywords:AnisakisAllergenInfectionIntensityPrevalence

Abstract

Sea bass (Lates calcarifer) is a commercially important species with high economic value in both domestic and international markets. However, a major challenge in its aquaculture lies in the high mortality rate of fry during transport, primarily due to water quality deterioration and stress-induced responses. To mitigate these effects, the use of water-conditioning agents such as Propack tabletscomprising calcium oxide, zeolite, and clayhas been proposed. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of varying stocking densities on the survival and behavioral response of sea bass fry during 30-hour closed-system transport with Propack tablet supplementation. The experiment was conducted on May 17, 2024, at the Faculty of Marine and Fisheries, Syiah Kuala University, employing a completely randomized design (CRD) with five treatments and four replicates: P0 (50 fish, no Propack), P1 (50 fish + 50 ppm Propack), P2 (65 fish + 50 ppm), P3 (80 fish + 50 ppm), and P4 (95 fish + 50 ppm). The fry used were 56 cm in length. ANOVA results indicated that Propack tablets significantly influenced (P 0.05) the survival rate across densities. The highest survival rate (78.5%) and best behavioral response were observed in P1, indicating the efficacy of Propack tablets at lower densities in maintaining physiological stability during transport.Keywords:Sea bassPropack tabletsDensitySurvival rate

Abstract

The southwestern coast of Aceh Province is among the areas vulnerable to heavy metal pollution originating from human activities, including mining, agriculture, and household waste. Chue snails (Faunus ater) are among the aquatic organisms that can be used as a bioindicator of water pollution. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the content of Lead (Pb), Cadmium (Cd) and Mercury (Hg) in F. ater snails originating from seven estuary areas in the southwestern coast area of Aceh Province. Analysis was also carried out to determine the environmental factors affecting metal accumulation and potential risks to public health. Sampling was performed in various areas, including the Jembatan Kembar River (Aceh Singkil), Trumon River (South Aceh), Kuala Lama Tuha (Southwest Aceh), Peunaga Cut Ujong River (Nagan Raya), Suak Ribe Puteh (West Aceh), Teunom River (Aceh Jaya), and Leupung River (Aceh Besar). This study used a laboratory analysis method with Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) instruments to measure metal concentrations in F. ater tissue. The results showed that all samples from seven areas were contaminated with Pb, Cd, and Hg at levels ranging from 0.691 - 1.575 mg/kg, 0.285 - 0.311 mg/kg, and 0.001 0.030 mg/kg, respectively. Pb and Cd content showed high heavy metal content, which exceeded the safe threshold according to the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM), Republic of Indonesia, with the greatest concentration found in the Southwest Aceh Regency. These results showed that the consumption of F. ater had the potential to endanger public health. Abstract

Mangrove ecosystem have been recognized as a paramount area in terms of marine debris traps despite of their essential role in carbon sequestration and coastal protected. This study collected marine debris and observed mangrove conditions on Moti Island as one of the conservation area in North Moluccas. The results of this study showed that R. apiculata had the highest species composition at both stations. The mangrove density at Station 2 (622 ind.h-1) which was higher than Station 1 (589 ind.h-1). The total number of marine debris was 214 items, with the highest composition of plastic debris (96% - 97%) and the lowest was metals. Most of the marine debris was classified as macro debris. The total weight of marine debris was higher at Station 2 (1812.79 g) than at Station 1 (1727.69 g) Furthermore, the density and accumulation values of marine debris at Station 2 were higher (0.12 items.m-2 and 6.043 g.m-2) than those at Station 1 (0.063 items.m-2 and 2.879 g.m-2). The mangrove beach cleanliness index at both research stations was categorized as very clean (Station 1) and clean (Station 2). The relationship between marine debris and mangrove density showed a positive correlation despite low correlation with an r2 value of 0.24. Meanwhile, according to single way ANOVA, there was no significant difference in marine debris abundance between the two stations. Abstract

Curah Ombo River is an estuarine water body with a muddy substrate that serves as the optimal habitat for bivalves. However, this water body experiences fluctuations in water conditions originating from both terrestrial sources and climate change. The impacts of these conditions trigger changes in the biological conditions, including bivalves.The objective of this study was to determine the diversity index, uniformity index, dominance index, and species richness index of bivalve molluscs found in the Curah Ombo River from Marchto June. The research parameters included identification, diversity index values (H'), uniformity (E), dominance (C), and species richness (R). Water quality was also measured as a supporting factor, including depth, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, salinity, and brightness. All data were analyzed for their relationships using Principal Component Analysis (PCA). The results obtained at three points revealed nine species: Paratapes sp., Anadara antiquata, Anadara transversa, Anadara granosa, Meretrix meretrix, Scapharca pilula, Mytilus placuna, and Atrina pectinata. Point 2 showed the highest values for most diversity index values (H'), uniformity (E), dominance (C), and species richness (R), exceeding points 1 and 3. Abstract

Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) is an important aquaculture species due to its fast growth and high economic value, with feed quality being a key factor in production efficiency. This study evaluated the effects of dietary green tea (Camellia sinensis) leaf flour on growth performance, hematological parameters, and intestinal histology of Nile tilapia. A completely randomized design was applied with six dietary treatments (02.5 g/kg feed) and three replicates each. Supplementation at 1.5 g/kg produced the best growth response, with significant improvements (P 0.05) in weight gain (7.24 0.91 g), length gain (3.61 0.21 cm), and specific growth rate (2.67 0.20%/day), while feed conversion ratio, feed efficiency, and survival did not differ among treatments. Hematological values varied but remained within normal physiological ranges. Histological analysis indicated enhanced villi morphology, suggesting improved nutrient absorption. Abstract

The ocean faces a variety of environmental challenges, including pollution, overfishing, habitat destruction, and climate change. These threats can have significant impacts on marine ecosystems and the livelihoods of coastal communities. The sea is also affected by currents, which are the continuous and directional movement of seawater. A number of variables, including wind, temperature, salinity, and the earth's rotation, influence ocean currents. Ocean current patterns are complex and can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year. Ocean current patterns can significantly impact the distribution and movement of suspended solids in the ocean. High levels of suspended solids can reduce water clarity, making water appear cloudy. The value of the concentration of suspended solids in a body of water greatly affects how high its turbidity is. Hydrodynamic models are used to study the movement of water and sediment in estuaries and coastal areas, including tidal, wave, and current effects. Abstract

Coastal fisheries play a vital role in supporting food security and livelihoods in Aceh, Indonesia. Among the various fishing methods used by artisanal fishers, the beach seine remains one of the most traditional and culturally significant gears, passed down through generations and still widely practiced in Gampong Pulot, Leupung District, Aceh Besar. Despite its importance, studies on the species composition and ecological implications of beach seine operations in this area remain limited. This study aimed to identify the types of fish caught using beach seine gear and analyze their composition to better understand the ecological characteristics of the catch. The research was conducted from January to March 2025 using a survey method, collecting both primary and secondary data through field observations and literature review. Results showed a total catch of 2,926.5 kg, comprising 16 fish species. The dominant species were bluefin trevally (Caranx melampygus, 28.43%), anchovy (Stolephorus indicus, 22.66%), and yellowtail scad (Carangoides ciliaris, 19.55%). The findings indicate that the beach seine fishery in Gampong Pulot mainly targets schooling pelagic species, which are ecologically important and economically valuable.
