Abstract

Indonesia is the second-largest producer of plastic waste in the world, while conventional plastics require a long time to decompose and may generate harmful emissions. Therefore, the development of biodegradable bioplastics has become increasingly important. Abundant cassava peels have potential as a starch source, with glycerol serving as a plasticizer and chitosan as a reinforcing agent. This study aimed to analyze the effect of varying glycerol concentrations (0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 mL) on the functional group characteristics and thermal properties of cassava peel starch–chitosan-based bioplastics. The bioplastics were synthesized by blending starch and chitosan at an 8:2 ratio, followed by the addition of glycerol at different concentrations. Characterization was conducted using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). FTIR results indicated no formation of new functional groups; however, shifts and broadening of the –OH absorption bands were observed, suggesting physical interactions through hydrogen bonding among starch, chitosan, and glycerol. DSC analysis revealed that glycerol concentration significantly affected the thermal properties of the bioplastics, with the highest melting temperature (Tm) obtained at 6 mL glycerol (160.67 °C) and the lowest at 8 mL glycerol (129.33 °C). The formulation containing 8 mL glycerol exhibited the highest fusion enthalpy (321.73 J/g). These findings indicate that the addition of 6 mL glycerol provides the most optimal plasticization condition with the highest thermal stability, whereas higher glycerol concentrations result in over-plasticization. The optimal formulation shows potential for further development as an environmentally friendly packaging material.

Abstract

Protein helps the body to grow and maintain tissue and replace damaged cells. If the intake of protein in toddlers is insufficient during their growth period, the growth and development of toddlers can be delayed and nutritional problems related to stunting can arise. And the level of protein adequacy affects the occurrence of stunting. One of the highly nutritious and easily accessible local foods that can be used as additional food is green beans, soybeans have the best source of vegetable protein, red beans have a protein content of between 16% and 20%, and are also a source of minerals and vitamins. The objective of the research was to determine the protein content in several types of beans (red beans, green beans, fresh soybeans) for handling stunting using the kjeldahl method and visible spectrophotometry. The method used in this research used the kjeldahl method, a simple way to determine total nitrogen in samples of several types of beans. This research also used a spectrophotometric method that can determine specific protein levels, had high accuracy and could measure small substances. The protein content obtained in the samples using the Kjeldahl method is Fresh Soybeans 35,19 gram, Green Beans 33,7 gram and Red Beans 28,6 gram divided by 100 grams of sample. The spectrophotometric method is Fresh Soybeans 29,09 gram, Green Beans 17,82gram and Red Beans 13,63 gram divided by 100 grams of sample. The protein content in the samples, namely fresh soybeans, green beans and red beans can be used in handling stunting because the levels obtained in the three samples can meet daily protein.

Abstract

The use of natural dyes from Hemigraphis colorata Hall. extract as cosmetic dyes faces stability challenges due to oxidative degradation. This study aims to test the effect of Butylated Hydroxytoluene (BHT) antioxidant concentration on the physical stability and color of cream blush formulations. H. colorata leaves were extracted by maceration and lyophilization, then formulated into four cream blush preparations with varying concentrations of BHT: without BHT (F0), 0.0075% (F1), 0.05% (F2), and 0.1% (F3). Physical stability of the formulations was evaluated for 28 days through organoleptic testing, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, spreadability, adhesion, and color stability using UV-Visible spectrophotometry. The results showed that all formulations met the physical standards for topical preparations. However, F2 (0.05%) and F3 (0.1%) successfully maintained color stability with minimal shifts. This study concludes that BHT can effectively maintain the physical stability of cream blush formulations based on H. colorata extract, with 0.05% (F2) being the optimal BHT concentration (the lowest effective concentration), based on considerations of effectiveness, safety, and cost, proven to be optimal in protecting natural pigments from degradation. These results provide important information for the development of safe, high-quality natural cosmetic products with a longer shelf life.

Abstract

User satisfaction with pharmaceutical services in healthcare facilities is a critical indicator of service quality and plays an essential role in improving the overall healthcare experience. High satisfaction levels reflect the appropriateness, efficiency, and responsiveness of pharmacy services. This study aimed to evaluate the level of satisfaction among users of pharmaceutical services at the Pharmacy Installation of Clinic X in Jember. This study employed a prospective observational design conducted in August 2025. The study population consisted of outpatients receiving pharmaceutical services, and the sample included patients who met the inclusion criteria and agreed to participate. A total of 160 respondents were selected using consecutive sampling, a non-probability sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and tables documenting respondent characteristics and patient satisfaction outcomes. Satisfaction was assessed across five dimensions of pharmaceutical service quality: reliability, responsiveness, empathy, tangibles, and assurance. Descriptive analysis was used to summarize respondent characteristics and satisfaction scores. Of the 160 respondents, the majority were female (71.25%) and within the age group of 25–44 years (53.75%). Most respondents had a senior high school education or equivalent (50.00%), were self-employed (64.38%), and had visited the clinic twice (38.75%). Satisfaction scores across service dimensions were as follows: reliability 97.1%, responsiveness 65.5%, empathy 68.1%, tangibles 82.1%, and assurance 66.7%. The overall Customer Satisfaction Index (IKM) was 82.2%, categorizing the service quality as good. The results indicate that users were generally satisfied with the pharmaceutical services provided at Clinic X. The high score in the reliability dimension suggests consistent service performance and accuracy. However, the lower scores in responsiveness, assurance, and empathy highlight areas requiring improvement, particularly regarding timely service delivery, confidence-inspiring interactions, and patient-centered communication. Although the overall satisfaction level was good, targeted improvements in these dimensions are essential for enhancing the overall quality of pharmaceutical care. Overall, the level of user satisfaction with pharmaceutical services at Clinic X was categorized as good, with an IKM score of 82.2%. All five dimensions of service quality were rated positively, although responsiveness, assurance, and empathy showed room for improvement. These results highlight the importance of strengthening service quality components beyond technical accuracy to ensure a more holistic and patient-centered pharmaceutical care experience.

Abstract

Background: Infant health is greatly influenced by optimal nutritional intake, particularly through exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. However, the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in Indonesia, especially in North Sumatra and Evi Primary Clinic, is still low. Many mothers provide early complementary feeding and formula milk before the baby is 6 months old, which can increase the risk of health issues in infants. Objective: To identify and analyze the factors affecting early complementary feeding and formula milk use in infants under 6 months of age at Evi Primary Clinic. Method: This study uses a qualitative descriptive design with a phenomenological approach. Sampling was conducted through purposive sampling until data saturation was reached, with a total of 10 informants (mothers of infants under 6 months who provided complementary feeding/formula). Data were collected through in-depth interviews. Data analysis followed the Miles, Huberman, and Saldana (2024) model. Results: The analysis revealed three main themes: (1) The perception of insufficient breast milk as the primary trigger for providing complementary food/formula, (2) Socio-cultural pressure and advice from the nuclear and extended family (especially in-laws) that encourage early provision, and (3) The inconsistent dual role of health workers, ranging from those who support exclusive breastfeeding to those who recommend formula milk from the start. Factors such as mothers' low knowledge about exclusive breastfeeding, economic conditions, and mothers returning to work also played a role. Conclusion: The practice of providing early complementary foods and formula milk to infants under six months of age is influenced by a complex interaction of internal and external factors, with maternal perception, culture, and family support as the dominant factors. The implications of this research highlight the need for ongoing education involving families, consistent training for health workers, and supportive policies to enhance breastfeeding practices.

Abstract

Metformin therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus is limited by its very low aqueous solubility and moderate oral bioavailability, factors that may reduce therapeutic effectiveness. Dispersible tablets also offer advantages for geriatric patients with swallowing difficulties. This study aimed to formulate and characterize nanoparticle-based dispersible tablets of metformin to enhance drug dissolution and early physicochemical stability. Metformin nanoparticles were produced via nanoprecipitation and characterized for particle size, polydispersity, zeta potential, and solid-state properties using XRD and DSC, while SEM imaging was used to assess morphology. The nanoparticles were subsequently compressed into dispersible tablets and evaluated according to pharmacopeial standards. The resulting metformin nanoparticles exhibited a mean particle size of 180 ± 20 nm (PDI 0.25, zeta potential −25 mV). XRD and DSC analyses indicated partial amorphization, which was further supported by SEM micrographs showing smooth, spherical particles with uniform distribution. The dispersible tablets complied with compendial specifications and demonstrated markedly improved dissolution compared with the conventional formulation, achieving 88% release at 30 minutes. Following accelerated stability testing at 40 °C/75% RH, assay values remained ≥95%, with no significant changes in dissolution performance (p > 0.05). In conclusion, the nanoparticle-based dispersible tablets successfully enhanced the in vitro dissolution of metformin while maintaining early physicochemical formulation stability, supporting further development toward improved patient acceptability and future bioavailability studies.
