Abstract

Rabies is a zoonotic disease that can attack humans through dog bites. Various methods have been performed for prevention, including socialization activities about rabies. The aim of community service, conducted by the Clinical, Reproduction, Pathology, and Reproduction Laboratory, Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Nusa Cendana University in Kualin Village, was to increase knowledge about rabies. Socialization was a method to increase awareness about rabies in the Kualin community, which this method using the Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The ABCD concept consists of 1). Identification of community assets; 2). Partner involvement; 3). Participation of the community service team; and 4). Partnership collaboration. The poster was one of the communication, information, and education (KIE) tools for transferring knowledge. Based on the results of the pre-and post-test, it shows that this method is quite successful where public knowledge about the symptoms of animals infected with rabies (58.82% to 88.23%), symptoms of humans infected with rabies (35.29% to 76.47%), and assistance if bitten by infected dogs (76.47% to 88.23%) increased significantly. So, this method can be applied to socialize other animal diseases that cause economic losses to the Kualin community.

Abstract

Health is the key to happiness in human life. Hand hygiene through the habit of washing hands is one of the effective steps to prevent the spread of germs. Elementary school children are the main population who are vulnerable to the spread of germs and diseases. The handwashing movement carried out at the Napan Village Test SDK aims to provide education on good and correct handwashing steps. Through this movement, children are given education about the importance of washing hands and are invited to know the proper steps to wash their hands. The activity result showed that the children were aware of the impact given through the movement of the habit of washing their hands regularly and correctly. Therefore, the role of teachers, parents, and adequate sanitation facilities in schools are also supporting factors for the success of this movement so that children become healthier and free from germs.

Abstract

Animal coloring and role-playing activities carried out at PAUD Tunas Harapan, Napan Village, aim to stimulate the cognitive, social emotional, and motor development of early childhood. Through this activity, children are invited to get to know various types of animals, develop their imagination, and train their motor skills. The results of implementing the activity show that it can improve children's ability to recognize colors, shapes, and the names of animals. In addition, children become more active and creative. Thus, it can be concluded that coloring and role-playing activities are effective learning methods for developing various aspects of early childhood development.

Abstract

Infectious animal diseases, particularly zoonoses, pose a significant problem to the inhabitants of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Province because of the high animal population, especially livestock, and the close interaction between humans, animals, and the environment. The Faculty of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine, Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang, held the Animal Disease Investigation Training Program for Veterinary Professional Education Students (PPDH) to overcome this significant challenge. This one-day workshop had been attended by 80 participants, consisting of 26 men (32.5%) and 54 women (67.5%). This training aims to improve students' understanding and skills in zoonotic disease investigation through theoretical and practical approaches. Theoretical sessions were conducted by giving presentations to provide a foundation of knowledge. At the same time, interactive approaches in the form of group discussions and field practice were designed to improve the ability to analyze and handle cases in the field. The results of this training are expected to equip participants with the ability to investigate, identify risks, and implement disease prevention and control measures. The expected implication of this activity is to improve the ability of prospective veterinarians to face the challenges of animal diseases in NTT, especially in infectious disease detection. This training provides relevant theoretical and practical experience in protecting animal and public health in the region.

Abstract

Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease and is still a threat to public health, especially in areas with high populations of disease-carrying animals. In 2024, there was a case of rabies in Sillu village, one of the villages in Kupang Regency. This village area is adjacent to Camplong II village, which is the locus of the Undana Veterinary Study Program KKN. Camplong II village is a strategic location for implementing rabies socialization and education programs. This activity aimed to increase public knowledge and awareness, especially among school children, regarding the dangers of rabies, prevention, and initial handling of bites from rabies-transmitting animals (HPR). The methods used were pre-test, socialization and education, distribution of pamphlets, interactive discussions, and post-tests. The evaluation results showed an 82% increase in children's understanding of rabies after the activity took place. This program shows that the right socialization and education approach can increase public awareness in efforts to prevent rabies.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to empower families of GMIT Jemaat Marthomas Kupang through the cultivation of Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan (KUB) chickens as an effort to improve family nutrition and economic resilience. The activity was carried out on Sunday, April 13, 2025, using the Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) approach. The primary targets of this program were housewives within the congregation, who were recognized as key agents in managing family nutrition and household finances. Through the ABCD approach, the local assets and potential of the congregation were identified and optimized to build independence in KUB chicken farming. The activities included education on poultry management, distribution of KUB chicks, and technical mentoring. The outcomes showed increased knowledge and skills among the housewives in raising KUB chickens, along with a growing awareness of the importance of animal protein in fulfilling family nutritional needs. This program is expected to be sustainable and to have a positive impact on improving the overall quality of life of the congregation.

Abstract

Rabies remains a critical public health concern, particularly in areas with limited resources and insufficient preventive efforts. Early education plays a vital role in raising awareness and promoting preventive behavior. This community service activity aimed to educate elementary school children about rabies through a creative and enjoyable method—coloring activities. The program was conducted at SD Inpres Nenonaheun, located in Nunhila Village, Mollo Barat Sub-district, Timor Tengah Selatan Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. It involved interactive coloring sessions using rabies-themed educational materials specifically designed for children aged 7 to 12. This activity combined visual learning and storytelling to convey essential information about rabies transmission, symptoms, and prevention. Evaluation through pre- and post-activity questionnaires revealed a significant improvement in the children's understanding of rabies. The use of coloring activities as an educational tool proved to be an effective strategy for raising awareness among elementary school students, indicating its potential for broader application in similar rural settings.

Abstract

Anisakiasis is a zoonotic disease caused by infection with the parasitic worm Anisakis sp. This parasite is commonly found in raw or undercooked marine fish that humans consume. The disease is transmitted when Anisakis larvae are ingested and attach to the human digestive tract wall. Clinical symptoms of anisakiasis include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes severe allergic reactions such as anaphylaxis. Prevention of anisakiasis can be achieved by thoroughly cooking fish or freezing it before consumption. Awareness of this risk and education on proper fish preparation and cooking methods can reduce the incidence of the disease among vulnerable populations. Community outreach activities at TPI Oesapa, focusing on disease recognition and anisakiasis control, serve as a preventive measure by building public knowledge and providing education to the community. This approach helps mitigate the spread of the disease.
