Abstract

The outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) and African Swine Fever (ASF) in Indonesia needs to be counteracted by providing education and increasing awareness to the farming community about the importance of animal health and its impact on the economy and human health. Apart from that, the public also needs to be educated about the transmission and prevention of FMD, which is still free in NTT, and ASF disease, which is currently being eradicated. Members of the Telekomunit Farmers Group, the Sanam Tuan Farmers Group, the Sabu Bani Farmers Group, and the Setetes Madu Farmers Group in Camplong II Village, Fatuleu District, Kupang Regency, Nusa Province East Southeast are being helped through communication and education as part of this service activity. The goal is to make them more aware of the threat of PMK and ASF. In this activity, the community was also educated about rabies, which has become an epidemic in TTS, one of the areas on the island of Timor, and has been designated as an extraordinary rabies event.

Abstract

The Eid al-Adha celebration is a Muslim religious celebration when Muslims are financially capable of sacrificial animals such as cows and goats and then share the meats with the community. However, zoonotic diseases, which can attack humans, become a threat. Therefore, a veterinarian was needed to check whether the meat from 11 cows and 16 goats at Al-Istiqomah mosque was free from zoonotic diseases and safe for consumption by the public. This activity was divided into three stages: antemortem examination, post-mortem examination, and dissemination of knowledge about zoonotic animal diseases. The ante-mortem examination result showed that all animals were eligible for slaughter. However, after post-mortem examination, three livers had to be rejected due to Fasciola sp infestation. This worm could attack humans through uncooked liver. The findings from this post-mortem examination prevented the possibility of 500 heads of families getting liver that contained Fasciola sp.

Abstract

Community service is one of the programs that must be continued to be carried out in the community. In oder to reach the farmers needed in the Sanggah Betes Farmer group, Holoama Village, Lobalain District, Rote Ndao Regency, where the availability of fresh grass in the fields and tree leaves are abundant in February to May and Straw is also abundant in harvest season (rice straw and corn) as well as forage crops (grass odot) that introduced to Rote are also increasing. So the challenge is the utilization of this extraordinary potential food source is not optimal yet. The model of service activities offered to this group was in the form of socialization and direct practice of the service committee team to livestock groups under the local service supervision which is the Livestock Office of Rote Ndao Regency. The expected results of this service activity were this livestock group becomes a central example for other livestock groups and will continue to apply the knowledge that gained.

Abstract

Eggs are one of the main livestock products apart from meat and milk which make the biggest contribution to achieving adequate nutrition in society. Eggs as a food ingredient have many advantages, such as the high nutritional content of eggs, especially in terms of protein and the relatively cheap price of eggs compared to other protein sources. However, eggs also have disadvantages, such as being easily damaged if not handled properly. Contamination of chicken eggs has a very important role in the incidence of diseases caused by the eggs themselves. Eggs are easily damaged, both physical damage and damage caused by microbial growth. The availability of eggs that are always available and have high nutritional value must be balanced with public knowledge about egg quality and egg handling to slow down the decline in egg quality because the nature of eggs is easily damaged, does not last long and quickly declines in quality. Through proper education, people can understand the importance of consuming eggs, storing eggs correctly, selecting good eggs and maintaining the cleanliness and integrity of eggs as preventive measures against diseases originating from egg contaminants.

Abstract

The prevalence of stunted toddlers in Kupang district is still high, including in the partner area, namely Camplong-II village, Fatuleu sub-district. This village is one of the areas with sufficient water sources and adequate agricultural products, but a few stunted toddlers are still found. Adequate agricultural and livestock production does not guarantee that the nutritional status of toddlers will be good, even though sufficient food is available in the family, if the caregiver does not provide it according to the toddler's needs, the toddler will also experience malnutrition. Data from the Hamlet II Haumeni Posyandu, Camplong-II Village shows that there are 27 stunted toddlers (July 2022). The implementation of preventive promotive services for stunted toddlers or those at risk of stunting is intended as an effort to increase public knowledge about the prevention and handling of stunting. This activity aims to reduce stunting rates by providing counseling, cooking demonstrations, and distributing necessities. The output indicators are increasing knowledge about the prevention and handling of stunting and the use of food ingredients around for food menus. The expected output targets are increasing knowledge and skills of partners to serve nutritious food menus for toddlers and the availability of nutritious food ingredients for toddlers. The availability of protein and vegetable food sources is always needed by stunted toddler partners, so it is expected that two months after harvest, there will be an increase in the weight and height of stunted toddlers. Families who are intervened are expected to be a model for program duplication at other integrated health posts.

Abstract

Fractures are conditions where the continuity of bones, cartilage, or growth plates is lost due to trauma or non-trauma. Proper initial management can reduce the risk of disability caused by fractures. Delays in treatment can lead to disability. Several factors, such as community beliefs in traditional medicine, play a role. This activity aims to educate the community about the role of traditional “Sangkal Putung” treatment in fracture management. This seminar was held for the Hermon Hollo Him Church congregation in Sentani, Jayapura Regency. The methods used in this activity included lectures and interactive discussions. The seminar results showed that it successfully improved the congregation's understanding of the appropriate treatment options for fractures. It was concluded that this education is essential to help the community choose the optimal treatment methods for fracture cases.

Abstract

Personal hygiene is an action taken to maintain cleanliness and health for an individual’s physical and mental well-being. Good personal hygiene practices minimize the entry of microorganisms, thereby reducing the risk of individuals contracting diseases. ASUH, which stands for Safe, Healthy, Whole, and Halal, can be used as an indicator of food suitability for processing and human consumption. This community service activity aimed to supervise the effort to ensure the eligibility of sacrificial animals in Gampong Tungkop, Darussalam District, Aceh Besar Regency, through ante-mortem and post-mortem examinations. The animals examined included 24 cows and 6 goats ready for slaughter. The examinations consisted of ante-mortem examination, which covered the general condition, teeth, health status, eye mucosa, anus, absence of defects, sufficient age, not emaciated, and male gender. Post-mortem examination, which assessed the condition of the meat and visceral organs, including the liver (hepar), small intestine (intestinum tenue), large intestine (intestinum crassum), stomach (ventriculus), kidneys (ren), lungs (pulmo), spleen (lien), and heart (cor). Observations showed that the eye mucosa color of the examined cows and goats was generally pink, indicating normal conditions. All cows and goats examined were healthy and had perfect physical conditions (no defects). The post-mortem examination results showed that the meat, stomach, spleen, heart, lungs, and kidneys were in normal condition. However, endoparasites of the Fasciola hepatica type were found in the livers of five slaughtered cows. Health conditions of the supervised cows and goats met the requirements for sacrificial animal slaughter.

Abstract

A stroke is an acute attack due to blockage or rupture of blood vessels in the brain. Negligence and delay in fast and appropriate treatment will increase the death rate and permanent disability in patients with stroke. Education for promotive and preventive purposes related to stroke for church administrators is critical considering their roles and functions. This "stroke awareness" educational activity aims to provide knowledge (cognitive) and initial skills for stroke patient caregivers, as well as containing promotive and preventive content to improve brain health. The implementation method is interactive in-house training including material delivery, video sessions, and simple simulations. The activity was implemented in two Catholic churches in Jayapura City attended by 43 church administrators, and the training duration of around 150 minutes. This activity is crucial to provide basic knowledge about all aspects of stroke, starting from the causes, risk factors, course of the disease, complications, treatment, and estimated patient outcomes as well as tips and tricks for maintaining brain health. The simulations include recognizing early symptoms, initial skill in management of the patients at the scene and transferring patients to the hospital. Educational activities like this are recognized as very beneficial and are recommended to be carried out routinely to reach all people. Public education related to non-infectious diseases such as stroke which statistically tends to increase currently needs to be done routinely to improve the health of the community. The church can be a potential target for activating healthy lifestyles and reducing the risk of stroke in the community.
