JIKA (Jurnal Ilmu Kesehatan Abdurrab) has been published since March 2023 by the Abdurrab University Research and Community Service Institute in Pekanbaru. It is released four times a year: in March, June, September, and December. This journal focuses on the fields of nursing, midwifery, medicine, pharmacy, physiotherapy, health analysis, and public health. The aim of JIKA is to provide a platform for authors to publish their research findings that are beneficial to the community. The journal offers opportunities for researchers and practitioners in various health disciplines to share knowledge, ideas, and the latest findings in those fields. Abstract

Heavy metal contamination in aquatic environments has become a serious issue due to its potential adverse effects on human health through the food chain. This study aims to determine the concentrations of lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and copper (Cu) in catfish (Pangasius hypopthalmus) collected from three different locations: floating cages under the Rantau Berangin Bridge, the Danau Bingkuang Bridge, and a cultivation pond in Silam Village. The samples were analyzed using Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AAS) after digestion with a microwave digester. The results showed Pb concentrations in samples JRB 1, JRB 2, JDB 1, JDB 2, KDS 1, and KDS 2 were 479 mg/kg; 16.27 mg/kg; 165.68 mg/kg; 356.21 mg/kg; 99.6 mg/kg; and 336.57 mg/kg, respectively. Zn concentrations were 8.05 mg/kg; 0 mg/kg; 2.45 mg/kg; 1.09 mg/kg; 24.3 mg/kg; and 0.490 mg/kg, while Cu concentrations were 2.84 mg/kg; 2.81 mg/kg; 1.76 mg/kg; 0 mg/kg; 15.65 mg/kg; and 0 mg/kg, respectively. All Pb levels exceeded the maximum limit set by SNI 2729:2021, which is 0.3 mg/kg. Meanwhile, Zn and Cu levels remained within safe limits based on the decree of the Director General of BPOM No. 03725/B/SK/VII/89. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that heavy metal contamination, particularly by Pb, was present in the tested samples, rendering them unsuitable for consumption without further monitoring and testing

Abstract

Background: Unwanted pregnancy is a pregnancy that is not desired by the woman or her surroundings. This occurs due to various factors, making its presence unwanted by one or both prospective parents. Health education is an effort to create behaviors that support health. Objective: To determine the relationship between reproductive health education and changes in adolescents knowledge in preventing unwanted pregnancy at SMP Negeri 13 Pekanbaru. Methods: Quantitative research with a one group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 70 respondents using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires before and after education. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test and Spearman correlation. Results: Before education, knowledge was good in 2 respondents (2.9%), fairly good in 14 respondents (20%), and poor in 54 respondents (77.1%). After education, knowledge was good in 57 respondents (81.4%), fairly good in 11 respondents (15.7%), and poor in 2 respondents (2.9%). The Wilcoxon test showed a p-value = 0.001 < 0.005, and the Spearman correlation test showed a p-value = 0.001 < 0.005, indicating changes in knowledge and a significant relationship. Conclusion: Reproductive health education increases adolescents’ knowledge in preventing unwanted pregnancy.

Abstract

Hypertension and blood pressure variability (BPV) are recognized as modifiable risk factors for dementia, yet evidence in Asian populations remains limited. This study systematically evaluated the association between antihypertensive therapy, BPV, and dementia risk in Asia. A systematic search of ScienceDirect, PubMed, and MEDLINE (2010–2024) was conducted following PRISMA guidelines. Studies reporting hazard ratios (HRs) for dementia outcomes in Asian populations were included. Of 1,246 identified records, 22 studies met criteria for qualitative synthesis and 15 were included in the meta-analysis (11 cohort, 4 case-control). Antihypertensive therapy was associated with reduced dementia risk (pooled HR ≈ 0.84), while high BPV was linked to increased risk (pooled HR ≈ 1.23). Meta-regression identified study design and mean age as sources of heterogeneity. Overall, antihypertensive therapy appears protective, whereas elevated BPV increases dementia risk in Asian populations, emphasizing the importance of both blood pressure control and stability in preventing cognitive decline.

Abstract

Pulmonary tuberculosis remains one of the major public health problems in Indonesia, as it requires long-term treatment and optimal patient adherence. Patients’ knowledge regarding the disease, therapeutic regimen, treatment duration, and consequences of non-adherence plays an important role in supporting successful tuberculosis therapy. This study aimed to analyse the association between knowledge level and medication adherence among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis at Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital, Pekanbaru. This study employed an observational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 68 respondents were recruited using a total sampling technique. Data were collected using questionnaires designed to assess patients’ knowledge level and medication adherence. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results showed a significant positive association between knowledge level and medication adherence among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis, with a p-value of <0.001 and a correlation coefficient of r=0.542. This correlation coefficient indicates a moderate positive relationship, meaning that patients with a higher level of knowledge tend to have better adherence to tuberculosis treatment. This study concludes that knowledge level is significantly associated with medication adherence among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. Strengthening patient education, medication counseling, and continuous health promotion should be optimized to improve the success of tuberculosis therapy.

Abstract

Palm kernel oil (PKO) is an oil obtained from palm seeds (Elaeis guineensis Jacq) contains natural antioxidants. Objectives: Purposes of the study were to formulate, determine the physical characteristics of PKO nanoemulsions, and evaluate antioxidant activity. Method: The nanoemulsion was prepared into five formulations, F1, F2, F3, and F4 contained PKO at concentrations of 2, 2.5, 3, and 3.5% of PKO, respectively. F1, F2, F3, and F4 were added with vitamin C at a concentration of 2,5%. F5 as a control contained 3.5% PKO without vitamin C. Physical evaluations included organoleptic, viscosity, pH, centrifugation, transmittance, droplet size, zeta potential, and freeze-thaw tests. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using the DPPH assay method. Results: All of the physical evaluations fulfilled the requirement of nanoemulsion formulation. Antioxidant activity (IC50 value) of F1, F2, F3, F4, and F5 was 2.98 ± 0.21; 2.25 ± 0.23; 1.29 ± 0.05; 1.17 ± 0.12; and 51.96 ± 37.19 ppm, respectively. It was indicated very strong antioxidant activity, while for F5 (PKO without vitamin C) has strong activity (IC50 of 51.9 ppm). Conclusions: It is concluded that the PKO can be used as a antioxidant. PKO-Vitamin C can be formulated as a stable nanoemulsion.
