Abstract

The Batak ethnic group is known for upholding traditional customs and cultural values passed down through generations. Even in the modern era, many Batak communities continue to adhere to cultural norms and believe in various ancestral myths that shape their daily lives. This adherence often fosters patriarchal attitudes and leads to intergenerational tensions, particularly between parents and younger generations who adopt more modern perspectives. This study aims to analyze the representation of Batak customs in the film Catatan Harian Menantu Sinting by exploring its denotative, connotative, and mythological meanings through Roland Barthes’ semiotic framework. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with content analysis techniques, supported by literature review and visual documentation focused on scenes that portray Batak cultural practices. The findings reveal that the film illustrates how Batak traditions—such as gender roles, the expectation of having male offspring, and prohibitions against interethnic marriage—are still observed in contemporary society. The film highlights generational conflicts that reflect shifting values and the challenges of maintaining traditional norms amidst societal change. Ultimately, the film serves as a cultural mirror that captures the tension between tradition and modernity in today’s Batak community.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the marketing communication strategy of Grand Istana Rama Hotel (GIR) in Kuta, Bali, and to address the research gap regarding local wisdom as a core strategic asset rather than mere ornamentation in sustainable tourism. Employing a qualitative single case study method and in-depth interviews with key management, this research analyzes how GIR radically integrates the Tri Hita Karana (THK) philosophy into its brand equity through the strategic transformation of cultural capital. The process involves examining three strategic pillars: Palemahan (environment), transformed into a 1.7-hectare "Green Oasis" USP defying high-density economic logic; Parhyangan (spirituality), leveraged for brand trust through ritual transparency and ethical boundaries; and Pawongan (social), fostering strong emotional bonds through a humanist service culture amidst industry automation. Netnographic data from guest reviews validates that the human-centric service and the tranquil atmosphere are the primary drivers of customer loyalty and positive perception. The results show that this fundamental THK integration functions as a counterintuitive competitive defense mechanism, effective against market saturation and the impending 2025 hotel moratorium. The conclusion is that fundamentally integrated local wisdom offers a resilient and authentic model, positioning THK as a strategic communication framework that generates superior functional, psychological, and ethical value for sustainable tourism development.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of family communication in shaping the personal resilience of Qur'an-memorizing students (santri) at Pondok Pesantren Al-Amin, Pabuaran, Purwokerto in the digital era. The process of memorizing the Qur’an is inherently demanding, especially when santri simultaneously take on the role of university students. Balancing this dual role presents complex challenges in academic, spiritual, and emotional domains. Memorizing the Qur’an requires high consistency, perseverance, and psychological stability, while university life demands effective time management and deep intellectual engagement. This dynamic often leads to imbalances, particularly in time management, stress regulation, mental and spiritual well-being, and limited direct interaction with family. Hence, santri need a support system, with the family playing a crucial role. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with santri at the Al-Amin Islamic boarding school. The results indicate that supportive, empathetic, and continuous family communication—especially through digital platforms such as WhatsApp and video calls—significantly contributes to the development of resilience factors as defined by Reivich and Shatte: emotional regulation, impulse control, optimism, causal analysis, empathy, self-efficacy, and reaching out. Within the framework of family systems theory, two-way, stable, and open communication serves as a vital foundation for maintaining santri’s mental and spiritual health. Furthermore, advancements in digital communication technology act as emotional connectors, strengthening family bonds, yet require mindful management to preserve the quality of face-to-face interactions. This research emphasizes the importance of collaboration between families and pesantren in creating a support system that fosters the personal resilience of santri amid modern challenges.

Abstract

Abstract

The rise of digital media has profoundly reshaped how Indonesian citizens engage in political discourse. This study explores how Mojok.co's Putcast functions as an affective democratic space and a medium of political education for young audiences. Employing a qualitative approach that combines content analysis, grounded theory, and in-depth interviews with the editorial team, this research analyzes two podcast episodes: "Inaya Wahid: Lengsernya Gus Dur Bikin Trauma Politik Sampai Sekarang" and "Dimas Oky Nugroho: Mereka Menghancurkan Mimpi Anak Muda Indonesia!" Findings reveal that Mojok.co strategically employs humor, satire, and reflective narratives to frame political issues surrounding Indonesia's Constitutional Court decision No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023 and the role of youth in democratic participation. The podcast's framing encourages audiences to negotiate political meanings emotionally and deliberatively. Analysis of YouTube comment sections demonstrates active audience participation in three forms: reflective (developing personal political opinions), affective-educative (expressing empathy and learning), and critical-negotiative (reinterpreting the podcast's frames). This study affirms theories of digital democracy and mediatization, suggesting that podcasts function not merely as information channels but as participatory arenas of political discourse. Mojok.co's Putcast exemplifies how local alternative media can democratize political conversations through affective engagement, egalitarian language, and technological accessibility. Hence, this study contributes to contemporary scholarship on digital political communication and proposes podcasting as a strategic medium for youth political literacy and affective democracy in Indonesia. Keywords: podcast Mojok.co, affective democracy, political framing, digital participation, political communication

Abstract

This study aims to examine how interpersonal communication among Communication Science students at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta contributes to building relationships with lecturers and peers, as well as to identify factors influencing its effectiveness in both face-to-face and digital contexts. This research employed a qualitative approach. The informants were Communication Science students from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 cohorts, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis with source triangulation to ensure data validity. The findings indicate that face-to-face communication is perceived as more effective in fostering openness, empathy, supportiveness, positivity, and equality due to the presence of nonverbal cues and immediate feedback. Digital communication, meanwhile, functions as a complementary medium that offers flexibility and accessibility, particularly for academic information exchange. The effectiveness of interpersonal communication is influenced by message clarity, constructive feedback, appropriate and polite language use, relational equality, empathy, emotional closeness, timing, and flexibility in digital communication. This study highlights the importance of integrating face-to-face and digital communication to establish effective and harmonious academic relationships in higher education.

Abstract

The study maps the discourse architecture of deforestation in Indonesian online media and assesses how actors, concepts, and issue frames are interconnected. Using a sample of 40 articles from eight portals (2024–2025), discourse-network analysis is employed to map the co-occurrence of actors and concepts. It interprets their position by connectivity and network density. The findings indicate two predominant competing blocks—environment versus economy-development—though they ultimately converge at the governance node (e.g., forest management policy, production forests, and palm oil plantation security). The Forest Management Policy operates as the axis, while Food and Energy serves as the corridor where consistent productivity claims are woven with ecological claims (coupled framing). At the level of actors, the government promotes the discourse, NGOs highlight ecological concerns, and academics act as brokers, providing evidential references to connect both blocs. These results validate the logic of agenda-setting: actors who are most prominently mentioned and cross-cut issues wield more influence in shaping the trajectory of public discourse. Policy implications are discussed, including enhancing data openness, providing space for diverse voices in the media, and defining better roles for knowledge users as connectors between arguments about production efficiency, food/energy security, and ecological boundaries.
