Abstract

Hypertension and acute respiratory infections (ARI) are two major public health issues in Indonesia. Hypertension is often called the “silent killer,” with a prevalence of up to 34.1% among the adult population. Meanwhile, the high incidence of ARI in communities driven particularly by air pollution and open-waste burning poses a significant challenge. This community service initiative aims to enhance public knowledge and awareness of healthy lifestyles to prevent hypertension, as well as environmental management and respiratory hygiene to reduce the risk of ARI. The project was carried out by thematic community service students (KKN Tematik) in Rapambinopaka Village, Lalonggasumeeto District, under the supervision of multidisciplinary faculty advisors in nursing, public health, environmental sanitation, and pharmacy. Methods included interactive health education, blood pressure screening, healthy lifestyle demonstrations, and advocacy on waste management to prevent air pollution that triggers ARI. Implementation was structured around lectures, Q&A sessions, poster distribution, and both pre‑test and post‑tests to assess changes in participants’ understanding. Results showed a significant increase in knowledge. In terms of hypertension, participants demonstrated a positive shift in awareness regarding routine blood pressure monitoring and adapting a low‑salt diet. Meanwhile, in the ARI intervention component, community members improved their ability to sort waste and avoid burning, aligning with an effective environmental management model. Conclusion is the integrated intervention combining health education and environmental management successfully enhanced preventive attitudes and behaviors toward hypertension and ARI. A key recommendation is the continued involvement of local health cadres and integration with Puskesmas or Posyandu facilities to ensure sustainability and expand impact.

Abstract

Abstract: Academic anxiety is a common psychological problem experienced by adolescents, particularly vocational high school (SMK) students, impacting their academic performance and mental well-being. This community service program aims to reduce student anxiety levels through education and training in mindfulness breathing techniques using the STOP (Stop, Take a Breath, Observe, Proceed) approach. The activity was conducted at SMK Mulia Husada, Banyumas Regency, involving 11th-grade students, and was carried out in a single training session that included counseling, interactive discussions, and hands-on practice. Initial screening results indicated that most students were in the moderate anxiety category. After the training, more than 90% of students reported feeling calmer and stated that the techniques taught were easy to apply in their daily lives. This program demonstrated that mindfulness training, packaged in an educational and participatory manner, is effective as a promotive and preventive intervention in efforts to strengthen adolescent mental health in the school environment. This activity can be replicated and developed as part of a guidance and counseling program or routine school-based activities to support student psychological resilience.

Abstract

Abstract : Primary schools are vital ecosystems for children’s growth and development, yet the risks of accidents and illness are unavoidable; therefore, the School Health Unit (UKS) and the Young Doctor program (Dokter Kecil) play a pivotal role. This community‐service initiative aimed to optimize the UKS function at SDN 3 Wonorejo Lawang—which had been suboptimal due to a damaged room—and to strengthen students’ first-aid knowledge and skills. The intervention employed a participatory approach comprising UKS room renovation, provision of basic health facilities, and Young Doctor training; the evaluation design used a one-group pretest–posttest (quasi-experimental) on 10 students (n=10). Outcomes included school readiness via a checklist-based facility audit (availability, fitness for use, and utilization), first-aid knowledge via a 20-item questionnaire, and first-aid skills via a performance checklist (bandaging, simple immobilization, minor wound management); analyses used descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon test (α=0.05). Results showed the UKS returned to optimal function with organized service flow and essential equipment available, alongside a significant improvement in participants’ first-aid knowledge and skills. We conclude that combining UKS facility improvements with student capacity building through the Young Doctor program effectively enhances school health service quality and emergency preparedness and is suitable for replication with a periodic monitoring–evaluation cycle to ensure sustainability.
