Abstract

Nigeria’s electricity sector faces growing challenges in meeting rising energy demand while advancing climate commitments and ensuring long-term energy security. This study develops an integrated modeling framework to assess the technical, economic, and infrastructural implications of high renewable energy penetration in Nigeria’s power grid. Combining long-term energy planning using the Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning (LEAP) system, short-term economic dispatch modeling via PLEXOS, and power flow simulations through OpenDSS, the analysis evaluates three grid development scenarios: Business-As-Usual (BAU), Intermediate Renewable Energy (RE), and High Renewable Energy (RE) integration. The results demonstrate that increasing the share of solar and wind generation to 60% significantly lowers total generation costs, from $3.1 billion under BAU to $2.18 billion in the High RE scenario, while reducing CO₂ emissions by over 60%. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and demand-side management (DSM) were found to be essential enablers of system flexibility, reducing curtailment and unserved energy, and improving peak load balancing. Voltage stability improved markedly with the deployment of inverter-based control and distributed storage, achieving over 97% compliance with voltage limits in the High RE scenario. Regional integration through the West African Power Pool (WAPP) further enhanced system performance and delivered net trade benefits. The study concludes that Nigeria’s grid can accommodate high renewable energy shares without compromising technical reliability or economic efficiency. These findings offer critical insights for policymakers and energy planners, emphasizing the need for regulatory reform, targeted infrastructure investments, and regional cooperation to achieve a sustainable and resilient energy future.

Abstract

The primary issue in Demakan Village, Banyubiru, Semarang Regency, is the high volume of rainwater runoff that frequently causes puddles in public areas. This community service aims to implement Horizontal Infiltration Pipe (HIP) technology as an eco-friendly drainage solution. The implementation method consisted of coordination and socialization with village officials and residents, site surveys, system design, and installation of a perforated horizontal infiltration pipe network at the Demakan Village Office on 15 November 2025. The implementation resulted in the successful establishment of a functional HIP system that reduced localized ponding around the office area, facilitated rainwater infiltration into the surrounding soil, and served as a practical demonstration of sustainable drainage technology for the community. The activity also strengthened the understanding of village stakeholders regarding environmentally sound drainage management and groundwater conservation. In conclusion, the HIP system proved to be a feasible alternative to conventional vertical infiltration structures, particularly in areas with limited space and specific soil conditions. The installed system can serve as a pilot model for sustainable drainage management in Banyubiru, while routine maintenance and periodic monitoring are recommended to ensure long-term system performance and support groundwater recharge.

Abstract

Seawater intrusion is one of the major environmental issues in the coastal area of Semarang City, affecting the quality of groundwater used by local communities, particularly from shallow wells. Low environmental literacy, especially among adolescents, may hinder early detection and risk mitigation efforts related to this problem. From a civil and environmental engineering perspective, limited public understanding of groundwater dynamics and coastal hydrogeology can exacerbate the overexploitation of aquifers and accelerate saline water intrusion. This community engagement program aimed to enhance the environmental literacy of youth community members regarding the risks of seawater intrusion through participatory education. The method employed an interactive training approach, including material presentations on coastal hydrogeology, groundwater management, and saline intrusion mechanisms, followed by group discussions and evaluation through pre-test and post-test assessments involving 15 participants. The results demonstrated an improvement in participants’ understanding by 31 points, equivalent to a 57% increase compared to the baseline condition. After the program, participants were able to explain more systematically the causes of seawater intrusion, such as excessive groundwater extraction, land subsidence, and reduced recharge areas, its impact on well water quality, and the importance of sustainable groundwater management practices. During the discussion sessions, several participants began relating the material to local environmental conditions, including the phenomenon of increased salinity in well water during the dry season. These findings indicate that participatory educational approaches are effective in strengthening environmental literacy within a civil and environmental context. The program concludes that participatory education can serve as a relevant strategy to empower youth as agents of environmental awareness, supporting sustainable groundwater management and coastal resilience efforts.
