Abstract

Anti-acne creams are among the cosmetics widely used by the public. However, some products are suspected to contain retinoic acid, whose use must be supervised because it can cause side effects if not used according to regulations. This study aimed to identify retinoic acid content in anti-acne creams circulating in Bengkulu City, determine its levels using UV-Vis spectrophotometry, and evaluate product safety based on the obtained levels. The study was conducted on five anti-acne cream samples obtained from beauty clinics in Bengkulu City. Qualitative identification was performed using a color reaction test with antimony trichloride (SbCl₃) reagent and thin-layer chromatography (TLC). Positive samples were then quantitatively analyzed using UV-Vis spectrophotometry at a wavelength of 342 nm. The results showed that three samples (A, D, and E) were positive for retinoic acid. The retinoic acid levels in samples A, D, and E were 0.285%, 0.105%, and 0.078%, respectively. Based on the Indonesian National Formulary, only sample E met the permitted range of 0.05–0.10%, whereas samples A and D exceeded the permitted limit. These findings indicate that anti-acne creams containing retinoic acid at levels inconsistent with regulations are still circulating.

Abstract

Irrational antibiotic use remains a global public health problem that contributes to the increasing prevalence of antibiotic resistance. Adolescents' lack of knowledge regarding antibiotic use is one of the factors contributing to antibiotic misuse. This study aimed to determine the effect of educational interventions using video and leaflet media on improving adolescents' knowledge and to compare the effectiveness of the two educational media. This study employed a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental pre-test–post-test two-group design. The sample consisted of 114 twelfth-grade students at Senior High School Y, Merangin Regency, selected using a purposive sampling technique and divided into a video group and a leaflet group. Knowledge levels were measured using a questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and the Mann–Whitney test. The results showed that educational interventions using both video and leaflet media significantly improved adolescents' knowledge (p < 0.001). The mean knowledge score in the video group increased from 76.30 to 94.39, while the mean score in the leaflet group increased from 70.28 to 90.93. The Mann–Whitney test indicated a significant difference in effectiveness between the two media (p < 0.05), with the video group achieving a higher mean score. This study concludes that both video and leaflet media are effective in improving adolescents' knowledge of the rational use of antibiotics.

Abstract

Pain is a health problem that can be managed with analgesic agents. Red gedi leaves (Abelmoschus manihot L.) contain secondary metabolites with potential biological activity. This study aimed to determine the analgesic effectiveness of 96% ethanol extract of red gedi leaves in mice induced with 1% acetic acid. A laboratory experimental study with a completely randomized design was conducted in 2026 using 15 male mice divided into five groups: negative control (Na-CMC), positive control (ibuprofen), and extract doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg body weight. Analgesic activity was evaluated using the writhing test by recording the cumulative number of writhes and calculating the percentage inhibition. The mean numbers of writhes were 66.33, 24.00, 51.33, 43.00, and 28.00 for the negative control, positive control, and extract doses of 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg, respectively. The inhibition percentages of the extract were 22.61%, 35.17%, and 57.79%. One-way ANOVA showed a significant difference among groups (p<0.05). Tukey HSD showed that the 400 mg/kg dose did not differ significantly from ibuprofen (p=0.190). The extract contained alkaloids, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, and tannins. The 400 mg/kg dose showed the highest analgesic response among the tested extract doses.

Abstract

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a clinical syndrome caused by the inability of the heart to pump blood adequately, which may lead to pulmonary congestion and dyspnea. Dyspnea is one of the main complaints experienced by patients with CHF and may limit their ability to perform daily activities and reduce their quality of life. One non-pharmacological approach that can be applied in nursing care to help manage this condition is a combination of the Semi Fowler position and Pursed Lip Breathing technique. This case study aimed to provide nursing care through the application of a combination of the Semi Fowler position and Pursed Lip Breathing to reduce dyspnea in patients with CHF at Dr. A. Dadi Tjokrodipo Regional Hospital, Bandar Lampung. A case study design involving two patients with CHF and dyspnea was used. Data were collected through interviews, observation, physical examination, documentation, and medical record review. The combination of the Semi Fowler position and Pursed Lip Breathing was implemented for 3 × 24 hours. The results showed that both patients experienced reduced complaints of dyspnea, decreased respiratory rate, reduced use of accessory respiratory muscles, and increased oxygen saturation, indicating an improvement in respiratory status. Therefore, the combination of the Semi Fowler position and Pursed Lip Breathing can help reduce dyspnea and improve respiratory and oxygenation status in patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF).

Abstract

Facial wash is a facial cleansing product widely used by the community to maintain skin hygiene. However, most products on the market still contain synthetic ingredients that have the potential to cause skin irritation. Jamblang leaves (Syzygium cumini) contain bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins, and alkaloids which have the potential as natural ingredients in cosmetic formulations. This study aimed to formulate and evaluate the characteristics of facial wash preparations containing ethanol extract of jamblang leaves. This study used an experimental method. Jamblang leaf extract was obtained through maceration with 70% ethanol solvent, then formulated into facial wash preparations with extract concentration variations of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. Evaluation of the preparations included organoleptic, homogeneity, pH, foam height, and skin irritation tests. The results showed that jamblang leaf ethanol extract contained flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins, tannins, and triterpenoids. All formulas were homogeneous with characteristic colors and aromas, had pH values within the skin pH range, and produced good foam. The irritation test showed that the preparations did not cause irritation reactions. Based on the results, it was concluded that jamblang leaf ethanol extract can be formulated into facial wash preparations that meet the physical evaluation requirements and are safe to use. This preparation has the potential as an alternative natural-based facial cleanser. Further research is recommended to test antibacterial activity and preparation stability more comprehensively.

Abstract

Digital health literacy can help adolescents access, understand, and evaluate information about menstrual health obtained through digital media. However, evidence regarding its relationship with Menstrual Hygiene Management (MHM) practices—particularly among older adolescents in rural areas—remains limited. This study aims to analyze the relationship between digital health literacy and MHM practices among adolescent girls aged 17–19 years in Penyabangan Village. This study employed a correlational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 80 adolescent girls were selected using accidental sampling. Digital health literacy was measured using the Electronic Health Literacy Scale (E-HEALS), while MHM practices were assessed using a 22-item questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test with a significance level of α=0.05, and the strength of the relationship was assessed using Cramer’s V. A total of 37 respondents (46.3%) had “good” digital health literacy, and 52 respondents (65.0%) had “good” MHM practices. There was a significant association between digital health literacy and MHM practices (p < 0.001), with a moderate strength of association (Cramer’s V = 0.581). The distribution pattern shows that the higher the digital health literacy category, the greater the proportion of respondents with “good” MHM practices. Digital health literacy is associated with MHM practices among adolescent girls aged 17–19 years in Penyabangan Village. Better digital health literacy can support adolescents’ ability to access, understand, and evaluate information regarding MHM. However, the cross-sectional design cannot determine whether better digital health literacy precedes the development of MHM practices or vice versa. The use of accidental sampling also limits the generalizability of the study’s findings.

Abstract

The final years of elementary school mark a crucial phase in child development—specifically for fifth and sixth graders—as children begin to enter puberty, a period characterized by physical, biological, emotional, and social changes. A lack of understanding regarding puberty can lead to anxiety, confusion, and poor hygiene practices among elementary students, thereby hindering psychosocial adaptation. Such ignorance can result in poor hygiene habits, emotional discomfort, and even health risks. This study aimed to determine the impact of puberty-related health education on the knowledge levels of fifth and sixth-grade students at SD Islam Puspa Bangsa. A quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design was employed. The study population consisted of 35 fifth and sixth-grade students, and total sampling was used. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using both univariate and bivariate methods (specifically, the wilcoxon). The wilcoxon yielded a p-value of <0.000, indicating a significant effect of puberty health education on the knowledge of fifth and sixth-grade students at SD Islam Puspa Bangsa.

Abstract

The implementation of the No-Smoking Area (KTR) policy in healthcare facilities is crucial to protect the public from secondhand smoke; however, smoking violations and limited information media are still found at Nurdin Hamzah Regional Hospital. This study aims to analyze the implementation of the KTR policy at Nurdin Hamzah Regional Hospital, East Tanjung Jabung Regency, based on the dimensions of communication, resources, disposition, and bureaucratic structure. This research employed a descriptive qualitative method with a purposive sampling approach involving 17 informants. Data collection was carried out through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation, analyzed using the Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña interactive model along with NVivo software. The communication aspect has been implemented through socialization and media, though not evenly distributed. Human resources and supporting media facilities still require improved maintenance and distribution. Implementer disposition shows good commitment and cooperation, while the bureaucratic structure through supervision by the KTR Team and Satpol PP has been running but still needs strengthened coordination and follow-up on violations. The implementation of the KTR policy at Nurdin Hamzah Regional Hospital has generally been running, but it requires enhanced continuous socialization, media facility maintenance, as well as consistent supervision and enforcement.

Abstract

The use of conventional abrasives (microbeads) in body scrub formulations poses potential ecological risks. As an eco-friendly alternative, this study aimed to formulate a body scrub cream using rice powder (Oryza sativa) as a natural abrasive and 3% ethanolic extract of jamblang leaves (Syzygium cumini) as an antioxidant, while evaluating the effect of varying ratios of Tween 80 and Span 80 emulsifiers on physical stability. This study employed a true experimental method. Jamblang leaf extraction was performed via maceration using 70% ethanol, yielding a thick extract with a 29.4% recovery rate. Three cream formulations were prepared with varying emulsifier ratios of Tween 80 to Span 80—FI (1:1), FII (2:1), and FIII (1:2)—and subsequently evaluated for physical quality, including organoleptic properties, homogeneity, pH, spreadability, and adhesiveness. The results indicated that the emulsifier ratio significantly influenced the product's characteristics. FI and FII produced stable, light-brown creams with a characteristic aroma, whereas FIII resulted in a bluish-brown paste that underwent color changes. All three formulas were homogeneous, maintained a stable pH (6.3–6.5), and exhibited adhesiveness exceeding 4 seconds. Regarding spreadability, FI (5.35–5.75 cm) and FII (5.50–5.70 cm) met topical product standards, while FIII (3.75–4.45 cm) did not. It is concluded that Formula II (2:1 ratio) yielded the body scrub cream with the best physical quality.
