Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out students' translation accuracy of report text in an English education study program. This research used a descriptive qualitative method with the third-semester students as the respondents of this research. The main data source was taken from The Jakarta Post, Bicara Melalui Kain": Redefining textile narratives in Indonesia. The technique of data collection used in this research was using one instrument: the results of the student's text translation. In assessing the accuracy of students' translations, the researcher used Nababan's (2012) accuracy assessment. The data shows that from 14 respondents from third-semester students, the accuracy of students' translations was still low. The low accuracy of students' translation was caused by the lack of vocabulary where there were many missing words, mistranslations, and distortion of meaning which affected the meaning of the text based on Nababan's (2012) Accuracy assessment. Around 7 out of 14 respondents were eliminated by the researcher caused by the used of Google Translate in transferring the English text (SL) into Indonesian (TL) which does not follow the researcher's provisions in her research. Regarding the result, this research could be a reference for lectures in improving students' translation ability.

The frequency of errors was as follows: omission (2.5%), addition (0.75%), and misformation (67.5%). Misformation emerged as the most prevalent error type. Based on interview results, the most common causes of simple past tense errors were students' need for understanding of grammar and simple past tense formulas, as well as a limited vocabulary leading to difficulty in constructing sentences. Additionally, students needed help with the placement of past tense verbs in sentences. These errors were further made worse by inadequate study time, overreliance on in-class learning, and less allocated self-study time at home.

Abstract

This study investigates the challenges faced by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students in using compound-complex sentences in their writing. The research aims to shed light on the difficulties encountered by EFL students when combining independent and dependent clauses with coordinating conjunctions to form compound-complex sentences. The study also explores the impact of mastering compound-complex sentences on EFL students' comprehension of literature texts. Through a mixed-method approach, including tests and interviews, the research analyzes the performance of EFL students in organizing complex and compound sentences and their ability to convert compound sentences into compound-complex ones. The findings reveal the obstacles EFL students encounter in structuring sentences and developing ideas in paragraphs, particularly when attempting to use compound-complex sentences. The study underscores the importance of sentence structure in effective writing and its influence on text clarity, coherence, and overall impact. The implications of this research extend to teaching and learning strategies in EFL classrooms, aiming to enhance students' writing capabilities and comprehension of literature texts.
