Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find out and analyze the types of figurative language and its meaning in the novel "The kite Runner." This research uses a qualitative approach with content analysis. The main data source is the text in the novel "The Kite Runner." The data analysis technique in this research consists of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The results of this research, the researcher found 64 sentences of figurative language from five types of figurative language put forward by Leech (1981), namely personification indicated in as many as 18 sentences, similes indicated in as many as 18 sentences, metaphors indicated in as many as 4 sentences, hyperbole indicated in as many as 14 sentences, and metonymy indicated in as many as 10 sentences.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the correlation between English learners’ syntactic awareness and writing ability. It was carried out with 30 students from the 2018 cohort of the Department of English at Universitas Negeri Malang. A syntactic awareness and descriptive writing tests were used to obtain data. The data was analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient formula, Pearson product-moment formula, and SPSS 21 software by the researchers. According to the findings, with a mean score of 83.2 for the syntactic awareness test and 83.3 for the writing test, both the syntactic awareness and writing test results are satisfactory. The results also show a positive correlation between syntactic awareness and writing ability (the result was 0.702 with a significant level of 0.01, indicating a high-level correlation. Finally, the researchers suggests that lecturers emphasize the importance of syntactic awareness when it comes to improving their students' writing skills. It is also suggested that future researchers conduct further research on syntactic awareness as a strategy to improve the writing ability of English students.

Abstract

Higher order thinking skills (HOTS) refer to the more advanced mental processes outlined in Anderson and Krathwohl's updated version of Bloom's taxonomy (2021), comprising analysis, evaluation, and creation.". This research aimed to investigate the composition of HOTS (Higher Order Thinking Skill) in language tasks and knowledge of the English textbook on titled “Pathway” To English For SMA/MA Grade X and to explain the dominant cognitive dimension used in this textbook. The design of this research was descriptive qualitative. This research is classified as a content analysis. A table checklist based on the cognitive domain of the revised Bloom’s taxonomy was the instrument of this research. The findings of the research indicate that for language skills, this book is more concerned with HOT than LOTS with the percentage of HOTS at 58,34% and LOTS at 41,66%.  The result showed The most dominant level of thinking skill of language skill in this book is analyze (C4), followed by apply (C3), remember (C1), create (C6), evaluate (C5), and understand (C2).  For knowledge, it can be concluded that the composition of the Higher Order Thinking Skill (HOTS) presented in the instruction question on the English Textbook is not lower than the Lower Order Thinking Skill (LOTS) with the percentage of HOTS at 20,83% and LOTS at 79,17%. The dominant composition is Apply (C3), followed by Remember (C1), Apply (C4), and Understand (C2).   The researcher concludes that for language skill and knowledge, the cognitive dimension of each instruction question is present in the imbalance portion. Based on the result, this book has followed the ministry of education regulation and mereka curriculum in providing HOTS material in the teaching and learning process for language skills and proving LOTS material for knowledge because grammar and vocabulary teach the basics of language. It is suggested for teachers who use this book to be innovative, and creative, even teachers can adapt from other sources in giving instruction to develop students’ critical thinking.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of fifth semester students in reading mastery. This research took place in the English Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Khairun Ternate. This research uses descriptive quantitative method to explain and describe the level of fifth semester students of English education study program in students' mastery of reading. Researchers collected data by giving questioners to determine students' mastery. The subjects of this study were 45 students. In this study there were no students who fell into the Excellent category. A total of 14 students (31.11%) whose test results fell into the good category. 11 students (24.44%) test results fall into the Fair category. 13 students (28.88%) test results fall into the Fair category. 7 students (15.55%) were in the Poor category. To summarize, the average score of students in mastery of English reading is still quite adequate with a total average score of 53.97. Based on this study, the researcher found that there are some difficulties of students in reading comprehension, namely on complex words or vocabulary, the ability to understand sentences.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether the use of storytelling techniques significantly improves students' speaking skills at SMA Negeri 5 Ternate City. This research uses quantitative methods with a pre-experimental design. This research involved 20 students as samples. Storytelling is used as a teaching technique. The research results show that the use of storytelling techniques can significantly improve students' speaking comprehension. The research results showed that the students' average score on the post-test was higher (73.05) compared to the pre-test score (46.35). The t-test shows that the t-statistic value (4.35) exceeds the table value (2.11) at a significance level of 0.05 and 20 degrees of freedom using a one-sided test. Therefore, the null hypothesis (HO) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. Therefore, it can be concluded that the storytelling technique is useful for improving students' speaking abilities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find out Annie Sullivan's character based on the psychological perspective in The Miracle Worker movie by Arthur Penn and to find out the factors that contributed to Annie Sullivan's success in educating that showed in The Miracle Worker movie. The methodology used in this research is qualitative descriptive. The primary data was The Miracle Worker movie, whereas secondary sources of data were libraries, websites, essays, articles, journals, and all printed things. Data analysis techniques in this study consisted of listening, reading, classifying, interpreting, and concluding. The results of the research showed there are seven Annie Sullivan personalities based on the psychological perspective and eight factors that contributed to Annie Sullivan's success in educating.

Abstract

Tujuan Penelitian untuk mengetahui bagaimana peningkatan keterampilan menyimak berita dengan menggunakan metode driil pada siswa Kelas III SMP Negeri 2 kota ternate. Untuk mengetahui Sejauh mana kah keterampilan menyimak berita dengan menggunakan metode driil pada siswa Kelas III SMP Negeri 2 kota ternate.  Metode Penelitian, Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kuantitatif. Penggunaan metode ini karena masalah yang dibahas adalah masalah yang aktual. Penggunaan metode ini diawali dengan data, menyusun instrument penelitian, menganalisis dan menjelaskan data, Teknik Pengumpulan Data, Observasi. Interviau atau wawancara, Tes, Dokumentasi.  Hasil lembar observasi, Pelaksanaan lembar observasi dalam penelitian ini proses pembelajaran yang telah dilaksanakan baik, kegiatan obsevasi ini dilaksanakan sesuai dengan lembar observasi yang direncanakan yakni kegiatan awal mencakup kegiatan pendahuluan, memberikan apresepsi pembelajaran, memotivasi siswa dan berdoa memulai pembelajaran. Wawancara siswa SMP Negeri 2 Kota ternate, Data penelitian yang telah didapatkan diananalisis secara kualitatif berdasarkan data yang telah didapatkan Sesuai dengan hasil wawancara siswa kelas VIII SMP Negeri 2 Kota Ternate atas nama siswa yang bernama Santi Alfatih mengatakan bahwa menyimak dengan menggunakan metode driil sangat baik dalam proses pembelajarannya, kami dari siswa guru selalu di wawancarai kami dan kami melaksanakannya dengan baik. Rrekapitulasi data tes yang menjawab obsen a sebanyak 1.675 atau dipersentasikan menjadi 66%, yang menjawab obsen b sebanyak 1.539 atau dipersentasikan menjadi 6.14%, yang menjawab obsen c sebanyak 1.835 atau dipersentasikan menjadi 7.3%, yang menjawab obsen d sebanyak 1.924 atau dipersentasikan menjadi 7.19%, dan yang menjawab obsen e sebanyak 1.875 atau dipersentasikan menjadi 7.3%.

Abstract

This study aims to assess the ability of Grade VIII-1 students at Al-Irsyad Junior High School, Ternate City, in using English pronouns during the 2025 academic year. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected from 42 purposively selected students through a test consisting of 10 multiple-choice and 20 essay questions. Results showed that only one student reached the excellent category, 45.23% were in the good category, 14.28% in the fair category, and 38.09% also classified as fair. The average score was 54.66, indicating a generally low level of proficiency, largely due to students’ difficulty distinguishing between subjective and objective pronouns.

Abstract

This research aims to find out: (1) what are the most dominant types of errors made by class VIII of SMP National Banau Kota Ternate in making interrogative sentences? and (2) what are the factors causing errors made by students of class VIII of SMP National Banau Kota Ternate in using interrogative sentences? This research used descriptive qualitative method; this research involved 20 participants. The research instrument used a test, the test was used to obtain data on the types of errors in interrogative sentences. In data collection, tests were used to obtain data on the types of errors in interrogative sentences. In analyzing the data, there are five steps: Identifying students, Classifying types of errors by using the surface taxonomy strategy proposed by Ellis, Counting the number of errors, Discussing data, and Making conclusions. The results showed that there were 4 types of errors, namely omission, addition, misformation, and misordering. The percentages of the errors are 27 omissions (9.71%), 125 additions (43.10%), 129 misformations (44.48%), and 9 misorderings (3.10%). The most dominant error is misformation (44.48%). And the factor that causes students to often make error in making interrogative sentences is intralingual transfer. Based on the analysis of the students' answer sheets, the misformation type errors made by students are because students are still confused in determining the right auxiliary words. The researcher suggested that teachers give students some exercises to minimize the dominant errors and try to find solutions. For the students, students should learn more by practicing writing regularly.
