Abstract

The competence of teachers in making test questions for students is very diverse. There are teachers who are able to make HOTS questions, there are teachers who are still using HOTS questions. HOTS questions are questions that measure students' level of critical thinking, for that we need to know how the teacher's competence in making HOTS questions so that students can measure their level of critical thinking in mastering the material taught. This study aims to describe the level of LOTS and HOTS questions made by teachers on formative and summative questions in Indonesian subjects.  The participants in this study are junior high school Indonesian teachers in the Brebes area, Indonesia. This type of research is qualitative descriptive. The data and data source are Indonesian teachers in the Brebes area, Indonesia. The results of the study revealed the dominance of LOTS-based questions (Lower Order Thinking Skills) in summative assessment, which covered 66.9% of the total questions, while HOTS-based questions (Higher Order Thinking Skills) only reached 33.1%. This inequality suggests that assessments still focus on basic abilities such as remembering and comprehension, with minimal attention paid to the development of students' analytical, evaluative, and creative skills. This condition reflects the challenges faced in the preparation of questions, such as the lack of technical training for teachers and the limited guidelines for the preparation of HOTS-based questions. These findings have important implications that ongoing training is needed for teachers to improve their ability to design assessment instruments that encourage students to think more deeply and critically.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the relationship between student discipline and learning achievement in grade 5 elementary school students. This study uses a quantitative approach with comparative and correlational study methods that assess 31 students. The determination of the sample was carried out using the purposive sampling technique. Discipline assessment was carried out by 2 teachers and parents of students using validated instruments, while learning achievement was measured based on semester report card scores. The results of statistical analysis showed that there was a significant positive relationship between student discipline and learning achievement. The t-test score showed a significance of 0.000, which confirms the existence of a strong correlation between discipline and student learning outcomes. Although the correlation between discipline assessments from teachers and parents is not very high, the results of the study still show that students with high levels of discipline tend to have better learning achievement. These findings highlight the importance of implementing effective discipline strategies both at school and at home as an effort to improve student learning outcomes. The study concludes that discipline has an important role in shaping a conducive learning environment and supporting optimal academic achievement. The implication of this study is the need for cooperation between educators and parents in instilling discipline values from an early age to create a more qualified generation. Further research with a wider sample coverage as well as the exploration of additional factors such as motivation and learning strategies is suggested to reinforce these findings.

Abstract

Education is a fundamental pillar of national development, and equitable access to education is crucial for achieving educational equality. In Indonesia, the government has implemented a zoning system as a selection mechanism for State Senior High School admissions. This system prioritizes students based on the proximity of their residence to the school. However, disparities in the distribution of high schools across various regions pose significant challenges to the effectiveness of this policy. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the zoning system in Pasuruan Regency, East Java, by examining the distribution of high schools and its impact on students’ access to education. Using a descriptive quantitative approach, data on the number and location of high schools were obtained from the official website of the Ministry of Education and Culture. The findings reveal that the zoning system is less effective in areas where the distribution of high schools is uneven. Many sub-districts lack adequate school facilities, forcing students to travel long distances or enroll in schools outside their zones, often facing admission barriers due to the zoning policy. As a result, students from underserved areas experience limited educational opportunities, further exacerbating educational inequality. To improve the effectiveness of the zoning system, the government should prioritize the equitable distribution of high school facilities before fully enforcing the policy. Strengthening infrastructure in underserved regions will enhance access to quality education and ensure a more inclusive and fair educational system.

Abstract

Evaluation is one of the methods used to assess the success of a process in achieving its initial objectives. Evaluation through a guidance and counseling approach involves the collection of information (data) to determine effectiveness (implementation and achievement) based on three evaluation components: Understanding, Conform, and Action (UCA). This approach is applied in evaluating the Program Pendidikan Guru Penggerak (PPGP) in Banten Province by the Balai Guru Penggerak (BGP) Banten, using an evaluation mechanism that aligns with the principles of Guidance and Counseling (BK). The evaluation results serve as a benchmark for the success of the Guru Penggerak Program (PGP). The findings of this study indicate that the application of evaluation using the guidance and counseling approach in the implementation of the Guru Penggerak Program is more easily applicable. By utilizing the three evaluation components, the level of satisfaction regarding the program’s implementation and outcomes, the competencies acquired, as well as the planned actions and decision-making processes of Guru Penggerak participants, can be effectively identified.

Abstract

Guidance and counseling services play a crucial role in student development, yet misconceptions about their implementation persist. This study aimed to examine students' knowledge and misunderstandings regarding counseling services in schools, focusing on their perceptions of counseling roles and effectiveness. Using a quantitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 62 students of the FKIP Counseling Guidance Program at Pattimura University through a structured questionnaire. The results revealed significant misconceptions, with 75.81% of students believing that counseling is merely giving advice, 77.42% perceiving it as limited to certain students, and 74.19% viewing school counselors as "school police." Additionally, challenges in implementation, such as inadequate professional training, lack of stakeholder coordination, and low student engagement, were identified. The findings highlight the need for enhanced communication, targeted awareness campaigns, and structured professional development for school counselors. This research contributes to the literature by emphasizing the necessity of counselor training programs and improved collaboration within schools. Future studies should explore intervention strategies to address these misconceptions and examine their long-term impact on counseling effectiveness in educational settings.

Abstract

Hemodialysis is a vital therapy for patients with end-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD), yet it often imposes significant psychological and social burdens, including stress, depression, and a diminished sense of autonomy. While prior studies have highlighted the benefits of fostering a positive mindset in chronic care, little is known about the internal processes through which patients cultivate such resilience. This study aims to explore the lived experiences of hemodialysis patients in developing a positive mindset and to analyze its role in enhancing their quality of life. Using a qualitative research design with a descriptive phenomenological approach, data were collected through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with ten purposively selected patients at Blambangan Hospital, Indonesia. Data were analyzed using Colaizzi’s method, ensuring rigorous and participant-centered thematic extraction. The findings revealed four interrelated themes: (1) awareness and self-acceptance, reflecting emotional transition from denial to constructive adaptation; (2) family support, both emotional and practical, which bolstered motivation and treatment adherence; (3) trust in medicine and spiritual engagement, which helped patients find inner peace and existential meaning; and (4) focus on controllable aspects of daily life, enabling self-regulated health behavior and increased agency. These themes converged into a holistic framework where psychological, social, and spiritual domains interacted synergistically to build resilience and foster emotional well-being. This study underscores the importance of integrating cognitive-behavioral interventions, family involvement, and spiritual support within hemodialysis care. It also offers insights for educational institutions to reform health curricula and for healthcare systems to adopt interdisciplinary, patient-centered approaches. Future research should explore comparative and longitudinal studies to assess the effectiveness of psychological and spiritual interventions across cultural and religious contexts in chronic care populations.

Abstract

Correctional assisted citizens, particularly those involved in drug-related offenses, often suffer from low self-esteem due to intersecting factors such as broken family backgrounds, social stigma, addiction, and incarceration. These psychological vulnerabilities frequently hinder their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of Solution-Focused Brief Counseling (SFBC) in enhancing the self-esteem of inmates, specifically through a case study of an individual (Mas Firman) incarcerated in Banyuwangi Prison. Using a qualitative case study approach supported by literature review, the study applied the five-stage SFBC framework—relationship building, problem identification, goal setting, intervention, and evaluation—and gathered data through interviews, observations, and documentation triangulation. The results showed that SFBC contributed significantly to the subject's behavioral and emotional transformation. Initially exhibiting signs of introversion, distress, and hopelessness, the subject demonstrated increased self-confidence, religious engagement, goal-oriented behavior, and social interaction following the counseling sessions. These findings indicate that self-esteem is a malleable psychological construct that can be improved through structured, culturally sensitive, and strength-based interventions. The subject’s transformation was driven not only by counseling techniques but also by the integration of spiritual and familial dimensions into the therapeutic process. This study makes several contributions to the literature. Theoretically, it contextualizes SFBC within a correctional setting, enriching its application in non-traditional domains. Methodologically, it provides a comprehensive qualitative model for narrative-based inmate rehabilitation research. Practically, it presents SFBC as an adaptable tool for correctional counselors and educators to support psychological restoration. Furthermore, this study highlights the broader educational utility of SFBC in character development, life skills training, and mental health interventions, especially within inclusive and culturally grounded educational environments. The findings suggest that SFBC can be effectively integrated into correctional counseling systems and educational programs, particularly in settings that prioritize individual strengths, cultural identity, and spiritual values. Future research is encouraged to explore SFBC's application using comparative case studies or mixed-method designs, and to examine the long-term sustainability of its psychological impacts across diverse institutional contexts.

Abstract

Verbal bullying among junior high school students remains a critical issue due to its profound psychological, social, and academic consequences. The increasing prevalence of such behavior, coupled with the absence of reliable assessment tools, hinders early detection and intervention in school settings. This study aimed to develop and validate the Bullying Verbal Assessment (BVA) instrument in the form of an e-book, intended to identify instances of verbal bullying among students at SMPN 28 Malang. Using a quantitative approach, data were collected from 92 students selected through quota sampling. The instrument consisted of 41 items assessed using the Rasch Model through the Winsteps application. Results indicated that 16 items met the validity criteria (fit MNSQ values between 0.5–1.5, ZSTD within –2.0 to +2.0, and Pt Measure Corr values between 0.4–0.85), and the instrument achieved a reliability index of 0.69, falling into the moderate category. The findings confirm that the BVA instrument is valid and reliable for detecting verbal bullying behavior. The study provides a practical and accessible assessment tool for school counselors, enhancing early intervention strategies in addressing verbal bullying cases. Its digital format facilitates integration into school counseling programs, supporting both curative and preventive actions. For future research, expanding the demographic scope and exploring the instrument’s applicability across various education levels and digital platforms is recommended to strengthen its utility and impact in broader educational contexts.

Abstract

Bullying remains a critical concern in Indonesian education, with national and global data highlighting persistently high prevalence rates and profound negative impacts on students’ academic, psychological, and social well-being. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an assertiveness counseling module, utilizing Behavioral Skills Training (BST), in reducing bullying behavior among students at MTs Muhammadiyah 22 Padangsidimpuan. Employing a pre-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design, a purposively selected sample of 50 students, representing victims, bystanders, and perpetrators, participated in the intervention. Quantitative data were collected using a validated Bullying Behavior Scale and analyzed with paired-sample t-tests. Results revealed a significant decrease in bullying tendencies post-intervention, with most students shifting from moderate/high to low/very low categories, and a large effect size indicating substantial practical impact. The findings confirm that BST-based assertiveness education is effective in transforming bullying behaviors and fostering a more positive school climate, aligning with evidence from international literature while addressing gaps in culturally relevant interventions for religious and semi-rural educational settings. This research contributes practical guidance for integrating assertiveness training into counseling curricula and underscores the urgent need for skill-based anti-bullying strategies in Indonesian schools. Future studies are recommended to employ randomized controlled trials, expand to multiple school contexts, and examine the long-term sustainability of behavioral change to enhance the generalizability and impact of assertiveness education in preventing bullying.
