Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of English listening applications in improving the English listening proficiency of students from the TBI 2020 cohort at IAIM Sinjai. Employing a classroom action research methodology, the study involved a population of 25 students. Data were collected through observation and testing, with the N-Gain formula utilized for data analysis. The findings indicate that the implementation of an English listening application significantly and positively improved students' listening skills. This improvement is evident from the substantial increase in student scores: the average pre-test score was 11.176, while the average post-test score remarkably rose to 73.376. The N-Gain analysis confirmed these results, placing the improvement in the "good" category. This suggests that English listening applications are an effective tool for enhancing listening comprehension among students. For future researchers, it is recommended to explore the long-term impact of such applications and investigate their effectiveness across different proficiency levels and learning styles. Abstract

The integration of AI tools to English Language Teaching (ELT) has presented new opportunities, emerging as a potential tool for interactive and individualized learning. This review will explore the advantages and disadvantages of integrating AI tools to English Language Teaching by analyzing 50 peer-reviewed articles published between 2021 and 2025 from ERIC, JSTOR, SAGE Journals, and ScienceDirect databases. Through inclusion-exclusion criteria, 50 articles (25-Quantitative; 10 Qualitative; 15-Mixed-Method) were included for synthesis. The findings revealed that the advantages of integrating AI Tools in ELT are enhancing students’ learning experiences, improving writing abilities, increasing students’ motivation and engagement, and offering instant and personalized feedback. Academic integrity (plagiarism), inaccurate/generic responses, and over-reliance on AI tools are the disadvantages of integrating AI tools in ELT. AI tools offer numerous benefits that cater to individual student needs, learning styles and paces, fostering greater engagement and motivation. Despite promising advantages, the integration of AI in English Language Teaching presents several challenges. Teacher training and professional development are also crucial to ensure effective and ethical integration of AI in the classroom. Hence, the integration of AI tools to ELT emphasizes the significance of adopting innovative pedagogies, a student-centered approach, and certain ethical considerations.

Abstract

English speaking skill is challenging for Indonesian students, it is necessary to identify factor such as self-esteem that contributes significantly to the improvement of this skill. This investigation was conducted on students who have taken speaking class at an English Education department in a University in West Papua. The methods used to collect the data were questionnaire and interview. The instrument for Self-esteem identification and classification adapted the Self Esteem Inventory (CSEI) developed by Ryden (1978). Fifty students (50) students voluntarily participated in this study. Based on the data obtained from the research instruments, it was confirmed that self-esteem played pivotal roles on students’ speaking ability. Those with good and high levels of self-esteem perform better than the students with low self-esteem. Home environment, social interactions, supports, and appreciation were identified as determinant components for the students in this context to the level of their self-esteem in improving their English-speaking ability. Some suggestions and recommendations for future investigations are discussed.

Abstract

This study explores the growing trend of English language usage in Indonesian cyberspaces, particularly in social media comments. The researchers employ a qualitative research approach, specifically a phenomenological study. Data is collected using the documentation method, through screenshots of comments containing English on social media platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Facebook. This methodology allows for an in-depth examination of the real-world manifestations of English usage in Indonesian digital communication. This research aims to understand the motivations, contexts, and implications of this linguistic phenomenon. The results show that the use of English in Indonesian online spaces shows how language, technology, culture, and worldwide connections mix together. It shows Indonesia is more involved in global online talks while trying to keep its own language and culture. The findings suggest that English usage in Indonesian cyberspace is a complex phenomenon driven by various factors, including globalization, digital connectivity, and changing perceptions of language prestige.

Abstract

The integration of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) into English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning is an emerging area of inquiry, particularly in contexts undergoing curriculum reform. This study explores how embedding ChatGPT into a Learning Management System (LMS) can support secondary EFL teachers’ instructional practices. Despite national efforts to improve digital infrastructure and pedagogical innovation, many EFL teachers still struggle with effectively using LMS platforms for language instruction. The study adopted a Design-Based Research (DBR) guided by the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) Waterfall model, to design, implement, and evaluate an AI-integrated LMS. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and user walkthroughs with six secondary EFL teachers. Findings show that the AI-enhanced LMS improved usability, instructional planning, language material development, and teacher confidence. Teachers described the AI chatbot as a supportive thinking partner for generating lesson ideas, workload and encouraged pedagogical reflection. At the same time, they raised concerns about student overreliance, content accuracy, and the ethical boundaries of AI use. These insights highlight the importance of co-design, context-sensitive implementation, and critical digital literacy in GenAI integration. This study contributes to growing conversations on AI in secondary education by emphasizing the role of teacher agency, ethical awareness, and system adaptability. It suggests that GenAI, when grounded in local practice, can act not only as a technical tool but as a catalyst for language pedagogical instruction.

Abstract

This study explores the reading habits of fourth-semester students in the English Education Program at Nurul Huda University through a sociological perspective. It aims to describe students’ reading behaviors and examine the influence of social factors such as peer dynamics, family support, and digital media exposure. Descriptive method is used for this study, data were collected through classroom observation and a bilingual Likert-scale questionnaire. The findings indicate that although students acknowledge the value of reading, their practices are often inconsistent, hindered by academic workload, the pervasive influence of social media, and a limited reading culture in their immediate environment. A strong preference for visual and digital content over academic texts was also observed, raising concerns about the development of critical reading skills. The study concludes that reading habits are not solely driven by individual motivation but are significantly shaped by sociocultural contexts. Therefore, educational institutions should cultivate a literacy-friendly environment that addresses these social dimensions to support the development of effective and sustained reading practices, particularly for future educators.

Abstract

This study explores how English teachers at vocational high schools understand and apply authentic assessment within the Kurikulum Merdeka framework. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, Data were analyzed using thematic analysis by identifying key patterns from semi-structured interviews with two teachers, then triangulated through passive classroom observations to validate and enrich the findings. The findings show that both teachers have a good understanding of authentic assessment and are able to apply it through meaningful and relevant learning activities. They use methods such as projects, presentations, and practical tasks that reflect real-world skills. However, the study also found several challenges, including limited facilities, low student motivation, and time management difficulties due to large class sizes. These factors make it harder to implement authentic assessment effectively. Despite these obstacles, both teachers showed strong enthusiasm for using authentic assessment and highlighted the need for more training and support from the school. The study concludes that while authentic assessment is very relevant for vocational English education, its success depends on adequate resources, supportive policies, and continuous professional development.
