Abstract

Little is currently known about borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) in Nigeria, a condition characterized by an intelligence quotient between one and two standard deviations below the average that affects more than 14% of the population. Aims: The present study aimed to analyze the intellectual profile of school-aged pupils with BIF. Method and Procedure: The research employed the 'gold standard' in psychological assessments designed to measure differing intellectual capacities in pupils (WISC-IV) by administering to 204 pupils with BIF attending 20 sampled lower and upper primary schools in Onitsha Educational Zone, and their profile was compared with that of a control group of typically developing (TD) pupils. The results show that the WISC-IV profile of the pupils with BIF differed from that of the TD pupils, and the former’s performance was worse than the latter’s in all the measures considered. The pupils with BIF also showed significant differences between the four main factor indices, scoring lowest for working memory. At the same time, the TD control group’s profile was flat (as expected on the grounds of standardization criteria). No differences were found between the profiles of pupils with and without a comorbid neurodevelopmental disorder. The study findings support the hypothesis that individuals with BIF have a characteristic profile with specific weaknesses. Following the study's findings, this research recommends that the government should embark on modalities that will enhance environmental adjustments for developing children, treatment of comorbid conditions, and early interventions.

Abstract

This classroom action research (CAR) was conducted to improve student learning outcomes in a vocational high school through the integration of H5P-based interactive video within a Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model. The study involved two cycles consisting of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. In Cycle 1, students engaged with H5P videos containing embedded quizzes and participated in collaborative discussions. However, only 33.33% of students reached the minimum mastery criteria. Based on these results, improvements were made in Cycle 2, including the use of guiding questions and individual accountability strategies. The second cycle showed significant improvement, with 83.33% of students achieving learning mastery. The findings suggest that H5P-based interactive videos effectively enhance engagement, participation, and conceptual understanding among vocational students. The use of interactive video not only supports independent learning and collaboration but also stimulates higher-order thinking skills through visual, auditory, and contextual input. Therefore, integrating H5P interactive media into PBL is a promising approach for improving student performance in vocational education.

Abstract

The automotive and motorcycle industries' transformation through Industry 4.0 technologies demands workforce competencies integrating technical expertise with sophisticated soft skills, yet significant gaps persist between industry requirements and graduate competencies. This systematic literature review provides evidence-based guidance for soft skills integration in automotive-motorcycle vocational education by identifying development models, evaluating comparative effectiveness, and exploring industry-academic collaboration roles. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, comprehensive search across Scopus database covering 2020-2025 employed rigorous inclusion criteria focusing on empirical studies. The search strategy yielded 394 articles, with 42 high-quality studies selected for analysis. Data extraction used standardized forms with inter-rater reliability (κ = 0.87), while analysis integrated bibliometric analysis, systematic thematic analysis, and quantitative content analysis. Results reveal curriculum integration models demonstrate superior effectiveness compared to modular approaches across all competency domains, with advantages in communication skills (24 percentage points) and teamwork competencies (21 percentage points). Industry-academia collaboration emerges as fundamental catalyst, though implementation gaps exist between current practice (47% structured internships) and industry recommendations (85% target). The evidence-based framework provides immediate guidance for curriculum design, instructor preparation, and partnership development.
