Abstract

This study explores the functions and meanings of belis, a traditional dowry or bride price in Manggarai culture, within marriage ceremonies in Mbuit Village, West Manggarai. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach grounded in symbolic interactionism, data were collected through in-depth interviews with cultural informants, supported by observation and literature review, and analyzed using the Miles and Huberman three-step framework. The findings reveal that belis serves as a key cultural element, fostering social integration, promoting harmony, and preserving traditions in Manggarai marriages. Symbolically, belis represents the union of two families (social integration) and signifies an economic exchange. The study also highlights the challenges faced by families, particularly those from lower socio-economic backgrounds, in fulfilling the belis requirements, underscoring its deep cultural significance and the commitment it represents.

Abstract

This study aims to identify and analyze the forms and potential of social capital possessed by sociology teachers in Boyolali Regency and Surakarta City. It also seeks to explore the actors and institutions involved in developing teachers’ social capital and examines how sociology teachers utilize and enhance their social capital for professional development. Data were collected through interviews and document studies using a descriptive qualitative approach. The findings reveal that sociology teachers in Surakarta City have diverse perspectives on sustainable professional development. However, they agree that it must be continuously nurtured and advanced. Regarding social networks, a key component of social capital, teachers have leveraged existing networks such as Subject Teacher Deliberations at city/regency and provincial levels. Additionally, some teachers have sought alternative networks, including international NGOs and writing communities, to support their professional growth. The study highlights the need for teachers to embrace alternative networks beyond traditional ones to expand their social capital and sustain their professional development effectively.

Abstract

This study outlines the concept of Progressive Islam—a term for Muhammadiyah’s religious perspective—both historically and based on the ideological foundations of the Muhammadiyah Organization. After a conceptual explanation, this study analyzes the struggles of Progressive Islam in South Sulawesi through historical aspects and direct observations as a Muhammadiyah activist. The study reveals that the early generations of Muhammadiyah in South Sulawesi implemented the ethos of Progressive Islam through the development of educational and da’wah enterprises. However, the emergence of cadres who established different organizations, such as Hidayatullah and Wahdah Islamiyah, highlights ideological challenges and weaknesses in consistent cadre formation. Furthermore, conservatism among Muhammadiyah members in South Sulawesi poses obstacles to actualizing Progressive Islamic thought, despite efforts to address this through Muhammadiyah’s Tarjih Ulama Education program. This study offers practical benefits by providing recommendations to strengthen cadre formation and organizational consolidation to ensure Progressive Islam remains relevant in addressing contemporary challenges. These dynamics serve as an important foundation for sustaining the progressiveness of Progressive Islam in South Sulawesi.

Abstract

This study evaluates community participation in flood disaster mitigation efforts in Wetee Village, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were gathered through structured observations and in-depth interviews with community members and officials responsible for disaster management. The interview data were subsequently analyzed using NVivo 12 Plus software. The study focuses on community empowerment strategies implemented by the Sidenreng Rappang Regional Disaster Management Agency, using an eight-step community participation model to assess engagement levels. Findings reveal that the community’s involvement in flood mitigation remains largely at a quasi-participation level, characterized by limited engagement in planning and supervisory processes. This restricted level of participation is seen to hinder the overall effectiveness of disaster mitigation initiatives. The study recommends promoting community participation from pseudo-participation to a ‘delegated power’ level to improve outcomes, facilitating comprehensive involvement in planning, execution, and oversight. These findings underscore the critical role of collaborative efforts across various stakeholders to enhance disaster preparedness and response capacities at the local level, ultimately fostering a more resilient community.

Abstract

Crime is a daily phenomenon that emerges within society. From a structural-functional perspective, crime is considered disturbing and disruptive to the harmonious and stable order of life (social pathology). Drug-related crime is considered a serious crime, even bordering on extraordinary crime, as it has a significant negative impact on the wider community. The research aims to describe the handling of drug-related crimes by the police apparatus in South Sumatra. The research method used is qualitative research to examine incidents and various data variations that emerge in the field, employing a case study approach. The results and discussions show that the South Sumatra Provincial Police have been responsive in addressing drug-related issues in the province, ranging from prevention to rehabilitation, using 4 approaches: 1) Soft Power Coach, 2) Hard Power Coach, 3) Smart Power Coach, and 4) Corporation. The use of drugs can occur due to several factors, namely Poverty Factors, Environmental Factors, Criminal Involvement Factors, and Dependency Factors, highlighting the need for optimal supervision to prevent individuals who have recovered from relapsing into drug consumption. BNN South Sumatra collaborates with the PKK board to create a drug-free village with the aim of monitoring indications of drug use in the village community and forming a rehabilitation task force that is responsible for socializing the community not to use drugs again and stay away from drug use in the community.

Abstract

Gambus and song lyrics complement each other, creating harmony while representing the history and cultural identity of their communities. This study aims to explore identity through diction choices, phonological processes, and musical notes in Gambus. These elements are assumed to reflect social relations and cultural identity. The sociolinguistic theory of isolect and identity theory are applied to analyze the lyrics and musical notes. This qualitative descriptive study employs library research using the song lyrics of Ketepik Belian Padi and the Gambus melody played by Sukino (a Gambus maestro) and his daughter, accessible at https://youtu.be/wEJMsTUhY9c. The research addresses two questions: (1) How is Ketepik Belian Padi in Gambus Belitung portrayed as a social identity? and (2) How is Ketepik Belian Padi in Gambus Belitung used as an element of social identity? The findings show that the identity of the people of East Belitung is deeply influenced by historical events and is preserved through these song lyrics.

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the implementation of the Zero Inorganic Waste policy enacted by the Yogyakarta City Government, focusing on waste sorting strategies, infrastructure support, and challenges encountered in managing inorganic waste. The qualitative methodology involves field observations, in-depth interviews, and focus group discussions with various stakeholders. The research findings indicate that while this policy has successfully raised public awareness about waste separation, significant challenges remain, such as low public participation, limited infrastructure, and insufficient education efforts. Therefore, the government must increase resource allocation for waste management infrastructure and develop more effective educational programs to encourage behavioral change. This study’s contribution to urban waste management literature lies in its emphasis on the importance of a participatory and systematic approach to waste management and the need for public behavioral change to achieve sustainability goals. The conclusions of this study provide valuable insights for policymakers and practitioners in formulating more effective waste management strategies in Yogyakarta and other urban areas. This research also offers substantial theoretical contributions, particularly regarding the importance of participatory and systematic approaches in urban waste management and the necessity for societal behavioral changes to achieve sustainability objectives.

Abstract

This research explores the effectiveness of the Surabaya City Government’s policy on parking levy payments via the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS). The study aims to analyze the policy’s success in increasing Regional Original Income (Pendapatan Asli Daerah or PAD) and enhancing community welfare by improving the payment experience for parking users and supporting efficient management by parking attendants. Using Van Meter and Van Horn’s policy implementation framework, which includes six critical factors—policy standards and objectives, resource allocation, characteristics of implementing organizations, inter-organizational communication, implementer disposition, and socio-political and economic environment—the study evaluates both the facilitating and hindering elements of the policy. A qualitative descriptive methodology was employed, with data gathered through literature reviews, field observations, and structured interviews with key stakeholders, including government officials, parking service providers, and users. Analysis revealed that QRIS implementation has been beneficial in promoting transparency and efficiency in revenue collection, supporting PAD growth. However, challenges such as varying levels of digital literacy among users, limited internet access in certain areas, and reluctance among some parking attendants to adopt digital systems were identified as barriers to optimal implementation. Key findings suggest that the policy’s long-term success hinges on consistent inter-agency coordination, community engagement initiatives to raise digital payment awareness, and ongoing training for parking attendants to improve digital proficiency. The study concludes that achieving sustainable success in implementing non-cash transactions for parking levies requires a holistic approach, integrating community awareness, inter-organizational support, and policy adaptability. This research offers valuable insights for policymakers seeking to improve public service delivery through digital transactions. It highlights the importance of adaptive management in fostering community welfare alongside regional revenue growth.

Abstract

This study examines the role of the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) in supporting aquaculture households in Sidoarjo Regency as they adapt to structural shifts driven by industrialization and urbanization. The research analyzes how sustainable livelihood strategies enhance the economic stability of pond-based households impacted by land-use change. Using a quantitative approach with descriptive analysis, the study employs Structural Equation Modeling Partial Least Squares (SEM-PLS) to evaluate the influence of key variables. Conducted in Kalisogo Pond Village, the study uses purposive sampling based on criteria such as economic reliance on aquaculture and sector experience. Data were gathered through questionnaires and analyzed for model validity and reliability. Findings indicate that the SLA significantly bolsters pond households’ adaptive capacity to structural shifts. Income diversification through non-aquaculture activities enhances economic stability and reduces dependence on pond farming. Social capital further supports households by strengthening local community networks. The study underscores the importance of institutional backing and microcredit access for aquaculture households. Policymakers and financial institutions are encouraged to support sustainable adaptation measures. These findings offer valuable insights into the SLA’s application amid structural changes in industrialized coastal regions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the involvement of parents of economically disadvantaged students in post-pandemic learning, a crucial issue considering the demotivation experienced by many students after the COVID-19 pandemic ended. The research employs a descriptive qualitative method, utilizing interviews, observations, and documentation as data collection techniques. The informants include four parents, four students, and one teacher from SDN 2 Cidora, Lumbir Subdistrict, Banyumas Regency. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns of parental involvement. The findings reveal that parents of economically disadvantaged students engage in their children’s activities by providing physical facilities, offering motivation, paying attention to their children’s assignments, and supporting school activities. However, academic involvement remains low due to a limited understanding of the materials and time constraints. To overcome these challenges, parents rely on assistance from relatives as a form of social capital. The study concludes that economically disadvantaged students are able to compensate for the lack of economic capital through social and cultural capital, facilitating their adaptation to post-pandemic learning.
