Indonesian Journal of Forestry Research (IJFR) was first published as Journal of Forestry Research (JFR) in November 2004 (ISSN 0216-0919). The last issue of JFR was published in December 2013. The Journal has been accredited by the Indonesian Institute of Sciences since 2008 and by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education since 2018. IJFR has also obtained accreditation “Peringkat 1” or “Rank 1” from the Ministry of Research and Technology/National Research and Innovation Agency in 2020 (Decree Number: 200/M/KPT/2020). IJFR is issued in one volume per year, including two issues delivered in April and October. IJFR was previously published by the Research, Development and Innovation Agency - the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, formerly known as Forestry Research and Development Agency (FORDA) - the Ministry of Forestry, Republic of Indonesia. Due to national policy change in research institution, the Ministry would no longer manage and publish the IJFR. Therefore, since 2023, the management and issuance of the IJFR is handed over to the Association of Indonesian Forestry and Environment Researchers and Technicians (APTKLHI). Consequently, the logo of the publisher was updated accordingly. The Indonesian Forestry Research Journal is a scientific publication of the Association of Indonesian Forestry and Environment Researchers and Technicians (APTKLHI). This journal publishes the latest results of main findings and synthesis articles that contain significant contributions to science and theoretical applications in fields related to the scope of forestry research.

Abstract

Indonesia, particularly Palangka Raya City in Central Kalimantan, boasts approximately 241,736.25 hectares of forested areas crucial for human survival. Despite their significance, these areas are plagued by annual forest fires that lead to damage and adverse effects on the environment, including vegetation health and air quality. This research sought to pinpoint the extent of forest fire occurrences and their repercussions by analyzing changes in vegetation health and air quality through remote sensing technology. The study employed various remote sensing techniques, such as the Normalized Burn Ratio 2 (NBR2) for detecting burned areas, the Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) for assessing vegetation health, and PM2.5 for analyzing air quality. Utilizing Landsat-8 satellite imagery data as the primary source, the research successfully identified burned areas with an impressive overall accuracy of 82.229% using the NBR2 index. The findings revealed a direct correlation between forest fires and increased air pollution, particularly in PM2.5 levels, as well as a decline in vegetation health in the vicinity of the burned areas. These results highlight the importance of continuous monitoring of forest fire occurrences and their impact through remote sensing data to mitigate their adverse effects.

Abstract

Boric acid can be combined with vegetable oil treatment to enhance wood preservation. This research aimed to evaluate the fire resistance and above-ground field test of treated manii (Maesopsis eminii Engl.) wood with boric acid, vegetable oils, and heating. Manii wood samples were impregnated sequentially with boric acid solution and vegetable oils (neem, tamanu, and candlenut) in a tank at a pressure of 7 kg cm−2 for 4 hours at room temperature, ±26ºC. The subsequent heat treatment was at 60ºC, 120ºC, and 180ºC under atmospheric pressure for 4 hours. The fire resistance was evaluated based on sample weight loss after burning with a heating torch at 180°C ± 5°C for 4 minutes. The above-ground field test of woods was conducted on a shelf with a slope of 45º for 90 days. The results revealed that the combination of boric acid and vegetable oils treatment had better fire resistance than boric acid treatment and the control of manii wood. In the above-ground field test, the combination of boric acid and vegetable oils treatment also resulted in less weight loss due to weathering and fungal attacks. Moreover, the moisture content change was less than that of the boric acid treatment and the control samples. However, oil treatment caused a higher color change than the control samples during the field test.

Abstract

Sengon (Falcataria moluccana Miq.) is a fast-growing timber species widely distributed in Indonesia. However, its dimensional instability and low surface quality have limited its widespread use. Wood modification is essential for enhancing these properties, and one effective approach is heat treatment. This study investigated the effects of different heat treatment methods and durations on color change, surface roughness, weight loss (WL), decreased density, and dimensional stability of sengon wood. The heat modification process was conducted using two methods: oven-heating and hot press-heating, with temperatures set at 200°C for durations ranging from 1 to 5 hours. The results indicated that oven-heated samples exhibited higher surface roughness, weight loss, density reduction, and dimensional stability while showing less color change than hot press-heated samples. Additionally, the hot press-heated samples displayed more significant color changes (darkening) and smoother surface roughness. WL and decreased density were also more pronounced with longer heating durations, except for the 4- and 5-hour hot press-heating treatments. Notably, oven-heated samples demonstrated higher dimensional stability than hot press-heated samples as the duration of heating increased. Based on the results, the optimal treatment varies depending on the desired product characteristics. For improved surface qualities with consideration of WL, the optimum treatment is a 2-hour hot press-heating treatment. Higher dimensional stability can be achieved through a 3-hour oven-heating treatment.

Abstract

Increased environmental and sustainability awareness has fueled efforts to develop bio-based composite materials for a wide range of end-use applications, as well as new alternatives to non-renewable synthetic fibers such as glass and carbon-reinforced composites. Considering development and research, Paederia foetida fiber stem (PFs) reinforced composites have recently generated a lot of interest. Hybrids of PFs with carbon powder (CP) have been explored in order to achieve the best properties for composites. This study focused on investigating the microstructural, mechanical, thermal, and density characteristics of hybrid reinforced epoxy composites made of CP/PFs. Several compositions of PFs and CP (30:0, 20:10, 15:15, 10:20, and 0:30 vol.), were prepared to manufacture composite using a hot press method. The effect of the volume fraction of carbon/PFs on the mechanical, thermal, and fracture structure properties of hybrid composites was examined. The findings showed that sample CDS20 which was made up of 20% PFs and 10% CP had the highest tensile strength (42.3 ± 2.7 MPa) and elastic modulus (2310.8 ± 91 MPa). It also had quite high thermal resistance properties with a residual charcoal content of about 23.8%. SEM analysis showed agglomeration of CP and the number of voids decreased as the volume fraction of PFs increased, and the interfaces between CP-PFs-epoxy appeared denser. For infrastructure applications, this composite may serve as an alternative to epoxy composites reinforced with sisal fiber.

Abstract

Forestry research is crucial for forest conservation, sustainable resource utilization, informing policy, promoting development, and enhancing ecosystem understanding. This research is vital for creating policies that ensure forest conservation and support local livelihoods, especially as forests face depletion and degradation threats. Aceh, which contains the largest remaining forests in Sumatra, plays a crucial role in both local and global conservation. Therefore, understanding Aceh’s forest conservation research is the first step to improve conservation practices. This study employs a bibliometric analysis of forest conservation research in Aceh, using Bibliometrix and Biblioshiny to analyze trends. A total of 354 relevant articles were identified using the Scopus database. The analysis shows publication patterns, including document types, article sources, and research affiliations with Syiah Kuala University being the primary contributor. The study also examined the knowledge structure through keyword frequency, trends, and keyword co-occurrences. Results show peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers as the main publication types, with an increase in publications after 2005, coinciding with Aceh’s post-war political stabilization. Keywords, i.e. ‘forestry’, ‘conservation’, ‘fisheries’, and ‘ecosystem’ were found important. Topic trends revealed interest in forest management, ecosystem services, and disaster-related terms at post-2004 tsunami. Co-occurrence network analysis identified six main keyword clusters, i.e. biodiversity, conservation, land use and land cover change, and sustainable development.

Abstract

The cultivation of stinky bean (Parkia speciosa Hassk.) in wetlands is significantly affected by shallow water table conditions. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the growth of stinky bean seedlings and microclimate conditions in various substrate mixtures and shallow water table levels. The experiment was conducted at the Jakabaring Research Facility (104°46'44''E, 3°01'35''S), Palembang, South Sumatra, from September to December 2023 using a factorial randomized block design. The first and second factors were an ameliorant mixture in the substrate and shallow water table depth respectively, with each treatment repeated four times. The results showed that optimal leaf growth occurred using biochar ameliorant, but no significant difference was observed among the four types of planting media. Although the conditions of air and substrate temperature and soil moisture varied, the stinky bean seedlings still grew optimally on all four planting media, including biochar, peat, cocopeat, and topsoil under shallow water table conditions. A zero-intercept linear model was considered optimal for predicting leaf area based on midrib length, leaf width, and the interaction indicated by the R² value. Optimal stinky bean leaf growth was observed at shallow water table SWT-12, but plant growth at three variations of SWT-20, SWT-16, and SWT-12 was not significantly different. Fluctuations in the microclimate, including air and substrate temperature, as well as humidity did not significantly affect growth, suggesting that the cultivation of stinky bean plants could be carried out in all shallow water table conditions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the sustainability of three existing ecotourism destinations in the Gambia: (a) Bijilo Monkey Forest, (b) Maka Sutu Cultural Forest, and (c) the River Gambia National Park in the Gambia, West Africa, and postulate a sustainable policy strategy based on the outcome of the analysis through questionnaires, observations, and interviews. A mixed research method using Multidimensional Scaling (MDS) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) was employed to determine the sustainability status of ecotourism based on five dimensions: ecological/conservation, participation, education and recreation, economic, and control/legislation. The multidimensional sustainability index of the three destinations under study is 69.03%, 64.49%, and 54.94% for River Gambia National Park, Maka Sutu Cultural Forest, and the Bijilo Monkey Forest, respectively. This study concluded that all the sites under study are classified as sustainable. However, the community participation dimension needs improvement for fair and equitable distribution of natural resource wealth.

Abstract

The community surrounding Sebangau National Park (SNP) play a key role in comprehending the epidemiological triad. Peat forests have experienced illegal logging and concessions practises from the early 1970s to 2005. The disturbed forest habitat offers the perfect setting for the inter-species transmission of pathogenic agents. The purpose of this study was to identify any possible zoonotic concerns based on the typical community activities across SNP. Community access data were collected using questionnaires and interview in Kereng Bangkirai (Sebangau River), Asem Kumbang, Baun Bango, Tumbang Ronen, Jahanjang, and Karuing (Katingan River) as the representatives’ villages. These settlements are close to the locations used for field sampling (n:102 individuals). The prediction model was developed using CART®Classification for categorical data using MINITAB v. 20.3. We discovered that the model categorised five out of seven factors as important factors. The number of days spent becomes the most crucial predictor (100%), followed by access (95.3%), mode of stay (42.1%), followed by activities (16.8%) and defecation (8.3%), respectively. It was concluded that the longer and deeper they accessed the natural resources; the higher the zoonotic potential would be. The Indonesian Government has established a wildlife health information system, referred to as SehatSatLi, which is designed to protect wildlife genetic resources and reduce the likelihood of zoonotic diseases emerging. It is recommended that stakeholders at all level engaged in coordination, collaboration, and communication as a preventive strategy to inhibit the possible transmission of zoonotic diseases between wildlife and humans, vice versa.

Abstract

Bitti (Vitex cofassus Reinw. ex Blume) is a group of plants in the Verbenaceae family. The species is classified as a promising endemic plant in South Sulawesi; however, it has received little attention and has not been used and developed optimally. The seed is a recalcitrant category, which has responses to water loss. This study aimed to determine the effect of water temperature and storage periods on the vigor and viability of Bitti seeds. The study was conducted at a greenhouse of the Faculty of Forestry, Hasanuddin University, from May to July 2022. The design of the research was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of two factors: water immersion temperature and storage time. Each treatment consists of 30 seeds, with three replications. The results showed that a water immersion temperature of 50°C with a storage period of two weeks gave the best results in the parameters of percentage of sprouts (65,55%), germination viability (65,55%), and mean germinated seeds per day (0,49). The water immersion temperature of 90°C, which was drained for 24 hours without storage, showed the highest value for the mean germination time parameter (31,1), and the soaking temperature of 90°C drained for 24 hours with one week of storage produced gave the best value for the vigor index parameter (4,77). It is considered that germination activities on Bitti seeds require treatment with suitable water immersion. Thus, Bitti seed germination activities require water immersion at a certain temperature and storage time.

Abstract

Indonesia has responded to the timber certification obligation imposed by importing countries, particularly the European Union, by implementing the Indonesian Timber Legality Assurance System (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu-SVLK). This study aimed to evaluate the impact of the SVLK policy on the state of the Indonesian forestry industry and the performance of Indonesian wood goods, mostly plywood, in the international market. Secondary data on Indonesian wood product exports, classified under HS Code 4412, were utilized in this investigation. The analysis revealed that comparative advantage (RCA) analysis was used to assess the competitiveness of Indonesian wood products, while panel data analysis was utilized to assess the impact of the SVLK policy on Indonesian wood export performance. The implementation of SVLK enhanced the value of Indonesian plywood exports; however, the increase was still relatively small compared to other major exporting countries. According to the estimation results, the use of SVLK had a positive impact on the Indonesian plywood trade in the international market. However, Indonesia's ability to increase its market share was still critical so that the Indonesian plywood industry could maximize the potential for expansion in demand for plywood.
