Abstract

While the focus of most research in women's politics has been on the number of legislative seats and explaining the under-representation of women and other marginalized groups, we argue that there also needs to be a greater focus on voters themselves and their attitudes about gender representation in Indonesia. We focus on three broad series of questions. First, gender differences in attitudes about women candidates precisely. Second, gender differences in policy priorities. Third, gender differences in attitudes about one specific aspect of Indonesian elections – money politics or what is sometimes referred to as "vote-buying." The data are drawn from a stratified probability sample of citizens in the Demak and Pati regencies in Central Java, Indonesia. A total of 800 respondents were in the sample, including 55 percent of the sample consisted of women. The finding has some interesting implications in how to understand gender differences in Indonesian politics. Men and women both respond with the correct "rhetoric" view about the importance of women candidates and descriptive representation. Still, both genders shift from the "rhetoric" view to the "logic" view about policies that have a more direct impact on their own lives.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine partnership-based regional property management in increasing local revenue sources for the Bima Regency government, and to analyze the factors that support and hinder partnership-based regional property management in realizing an increase in regional original income with the concept of Collaborative Governance. This type of research is a qualitative research that was chosen to describe the implementation of regional asset management in the form of leased land carried out by the DPPKAD Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) using interactive model data analysis from Miles, Huberman and Saldana. The results showed that in general, partnership-based regional property management in increasing local revenue sources at the DPPKAD Bima Regency did not go well but showed an increase in regional original income, with supporting factors, among others; good quality/level of human resources education, a supportive work environment, and adequate infrastructure. While the inhibiting factors are regulations that do not reach the partnership process and the low level of program socialization.

Abstract

The relationship between democracy and social policy in Southeast Asia is a critical topic that has received insufficient attention. In general, trends in improving social policy as part of the government’s responsibility for citizens do not follow the trend of democratization. Even in autocratic countries, improving the quality of social policy is always a priority. This study answers the following question: what can the trend of improvement in social policy explain in relation to democratization at the state level? Through the comparative process tracing analysis method, this study demonstrated a discriminatory treatment factor in providing access to public services to certain groups related to the political forces that had been controlling the government. In addition, this study reveals several factors that have not been widely explained from the periodization of social policy changes in Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, and the Philippines.

Abstract

The debate over the concept of Indonesia's national defense and security system has been a significant topic since independence until the reform era. This article aims to discuss the dynamics of the Universal People's Defense System within the National Defense and Security System from the independence period to the reform era. A documentation study method is used to collect and analyze important documents such as laws, government policies, official reports, and relevant literature. Data analysis is conducted to identify significant changes in the concept and implementation of the National Defense System and its impact on the system's sustainability. Findings indicate that the national defense concept remains relevant and should be maintained. The Universal People's System involves all societal components, territorial integrity, natural resources, and other means, strengthening military and non-military defense integration, increasing respect, and enhancing deterrence. This concept is still valid in the reform era and remains upheld after the 1945 Constitution amendment. The debate on Indonesia's national protection and security system has been a fundamental issue from independence to the reform era, covering national security, protection, safety functions, and policies. Implications for education include integrating national defense topics in schools to foster public awareness and participation, contributing to a well-informed, participatory society.

Abstract

Most people agree that COVID-19 has affected the tourism sector the most. This paper seeks to find the socioeconomic impacts of COVID-19 on the destination under study. The research implored semi-structured interviews, observations, and content analysis to acquire information. The first case of the virus in The Gambia was registered on the 16th of March 2020. As of the 29th of January, 2021, the country registered 4,090 positive cases of COVID-19, out of whom 3,792 have recovered, 128 are confirmed to have died, and 170 active cases. A total of 59% of confirmed cases are male and 41% female. The ecotourism industry of The Gambia is hit hard by the impacts of COVID-19. The places highly affected are the wildlife ecologies with no spiritual connections. There is evidence of wildlife crime and negative human-wildlife interaction. Sacred sites are easier to manage as people’s spirituality frowns at wildlife cruelty. The pandemic has caused severe economic, health, and social challenges in the Gambia, killing many and disrupting the normal functioning of society, including wildlife ecologies in some places. It has increased wildlife hunger in Kachikally Crocodile Pool, economic distress, and human-wildlife conflict in Bijilo Monkey Forest and surrounding.   Keywords: Covid-19, Ecotourism, Environment, impacts, socio-economic.

Abstract

The Tretes Ecotourism area has been a plezier tourist destination since the Dutch colonial era, which offered mountainous natural charm, the weather that urban people desire, strong community culture, and the strategic position of the city center that had not shown the number of visits it should have. Especially if it is compared to Batu Tourism City, which is located further from Surabaya. Several problems were still unresolved, such as the availability of tourism diversity infrastructure and services. Moreover, the stigma of a location for hidden prostitution was a serious problem that can reduce tourist confidence. Using Butler's Tourism Area Life Cycle (TALC) theory about the development phases of tourism destination areas, this paper offered three revitalization strategies to return the Tretes Tourism Area as a favorite tourist destination. First, the Optimization Strategy, namely optimizing the potential possessed; Second, the Response Strategy, namely overcoming the crucial and urgent problems that are felt by tourists when visiting Tretes; Third, the Connection Strategy, which was to connect potential with market needs (link and match), services and tourism trends at the domestic and foreign levels. Developing Halal Tourism (Halal Tourism), which was becoming an international tourism trend, was expected to be an exit strategy for various tourism problems in Tretes by optimizing the potential for environmental tourism (Ecotourism) so that it became an alternative destination for the educational tourism market and family tourism in Indonesia. Keywords: Ecotourism, Halal Tourism, Tretes.

Abstract

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has seriously impacted the socioeconomic sector, including affecting the unemployment rate. This study evaluated the effectiveness of the government's social policies in responding to the economic crisis due to the pandemic and evaluated the traditions of citizenship and the welfare regime that existed in Indonesia during the crisis, especially to see the position of social policy during a crisis in Indonesia, which is rarely discussed. The data was collected using the questionnaire on unemployment in several big cities with a random sampling technique, and hypotheses were tested using the Structural equation modeling (SEM) method with LISREL 9.30 software to analyze the correlation between the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on unemployment among individuals, communities, voluntary organizations, and the government. This study showed that citizenship traditions and welfare regimes are not necessarily associated with social policy performance; people tend to rely more on themselves and the surrounding community to overcome their financial problems than the government. This is closely related to the level of public trust in the government's ability to solve public problems. Furthermore, the performance of existing social policies is quite effective in the short term in overcoming the issue of unemployment.
