Abstract

This study aims to examine the implementation of the Discovery Learning model in inclusive education to foster tolerance at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, a pesantren known for the diversity of its students’ backgrounds. The background of this research is based on the importance of creating an inclusive and harmonious learning environment amid the cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic plurality of the students. The research employs a qualitative approach using the ethnographic method, involving field observations, unstructured interviews, and documentation conducted over the course of one year within the environment of Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor. The findings indicate that tolerance education at Gontor is implemented through two models: the direct model, which emphasizes social interaction among student groups, and the indirect model, which focuses on developing open-minded personalities toward differences. The Discovery Learning model is applied in various learning activities, where students are encouraged to actively explore, discover, and collaboratively solve problems. This process not only enhances students’ cognitive and spiritual abilities but also cultivates mutual respect and tolerance, both in passive and active forms. The study concludes that the application of the Discovery Learning model in inclusive education at Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor is effective in shaping students’ tolerance attitudes and contributes significantly to the development of character education models in Islamic boarding schools and other educational institutions in Indonesia.

Abstract

Internship programs are mandatory in Indonesian vocational schools, including SMK Negeri 1 Kendal, to enhance students’ skills and work readiness. This study investigates the correlation between internship experience and learning outcomes in custom-made fashion production among 106 twelfth-grade fashion students. Using a quantitative correlational approach, data were collected through internship experience questionnaires and students’ competency exam scores. Statistical analysis via IBM SPSS 19 included validity and reliability tests, descriptive statistics, normality and linearity tests, and hypothesis testing using correlation and determination coefficients. Results showed a very weak and negative correlation (r = -0.126, p = 0.199), with only 1.6% of the variance in learning outcomes explained by internship experience. Although internships provided broad exposure to garment industry divisions, they did not significantly impact students’ performance in custom fashion making. This finding highlights a potential misalignment between internship content and curriculum goals, suggesting the need for program redesign and further in-depth research.

Abstract

This study investigates the relationship between VARK learning styles (Visual, Auditory, Read/Write, and Kinesthetic) and student learning outcomes in the Instructional Media course within the Home Economics Education Program at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Negeri Semarang. Understanding diverse learning styles is essential to supporting effective instruction; however, mismatches between students’ preferences and teaching approaches are frequently observed. A quantitative survey design was employed, in which students’ learning styles were identified using the VARK questionnaire, while final course grades were obtained through academic records. Data were analyzed using the Spearman rank correlation and the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results indicated no statistically significant correlation between learning styles and learning outcomes (ρ = 0.018; p = 0.916), and no significant differences in outcomes across learning style groups (H = 1.585; p = 0.663). Despite the lack of statistical significance, descriptive analysis revealed that students with multimodal learning preferences tended to achieve higher average scores than their unimodal peers. These findings suggest the pedagogical value of accommodating diverse learning styles, particularly through flexible and multimodal instructional strategies.

Abstract

In language learning, illocutionary acts is essential in shaping communicative competence. The research employs a descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the illocutionary acts in two 2024 TED Talks on English language learning using Searle’s (1976) classification as its analytical framework. The research aims to identify 5 illocutionary act types with the most dominant ones in selected videos and investigate the correct usage of illocutionary acts to better understand how language is used in educational discourse. The data were systematically classified into five distinct categories of speech acts: representatives, directives, expressives, commissives, and declaratives. The research identified that there were 159 illocutionary acts, consisting of 106 representatives (66.7%), 23 directives (14.5%), 19 expressives (11.9%), 11 commissives (6.9%), with no declarative acts identified in either video. The analysis reveals that the dominance of representative acts reflects the informative and persuasive goals of TED Talks, while directives, expressive, and commissive acts serve to enhance engagement, emotional resonance, and speaker credibility. These patterns show that effective educational discourse not only relies on vocabulary and grammar but also on strategically chosen illocutionary acts. This research suggests that to achieve communication goals, language users should not only concentrate on linguistic accuracy but also on employing illocutionary acts effectively to enhance their communication. Future research might extend this study by investigating larger and more diverse genres, different methodologies, or additional communicative dimensions. In conclusion, illocutionary acts are used strategically and contextually, shaped by the speaker’s purpose, background, and communication setting.

Abstract

This study develops a course scheduling optimization system that integrates a genetic algorithm with the Tsukamoto fuzzy inference system to dynamically adjust fitness values. The objective of this research is to overcome the limitations of conventional genetic algorithms that rely on static fitness functions, which only evaluate schedule quality based on the number of constraint violations. The Tsukamoto fuzzy inference system is designed with three input variables: constraint violation level, lecturer workload distribution, and classroom utilization efficiency. It employs 27 fuzzy rules based on triangular and trapezoidal membership functions to produce a fitness adjustment factor. The research methodology consists of four stages: requirements analysis and problem modeling, Tsukamoto fuzzy inference system design, hybrid genetic algorithm implementation, and performance testing and evaluation. Experiments were conducted using a synthetic dataset comprising 50 courses, 20 lecturers, 15 classrooms, and 30 weekly time slots. The results show that the proposed hybrid genetic algorithm achieves 42% faster convergence with an average fitness value of 0.89 compared to 0.76 in the conventional algorithm. Constraint satisfaction improved from 82.4% to 94.7%, lecturer workload distribution became more balanced with the coefficient of variation decreasing from 0.34 to 0.19, and classroom utilization efficiency increased from 76.8% to 88.5%. Statistical tests indicate a significant difference (p-value < 0.001) with a substantial effect size (Cohen’s d = 1.23). This research contributes to the development of a hybrid approach that integrates the Tsukamoto fuzzy inference system into genetic algorithms, resulting in more optimal, adaptive, and efficient course schedules compared to conventional methods.
