Abstract

ABSTRACT This study aims to analyze the forms of impoliteness in the comment section of posts by the Instagram account Bangsamahardika, specifically focusing on violations of the agreement maxim based on Leech's politeness theory. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through digital observation of comments on five Instagram posts by Bangsamahardika during the period of December 1–10, 2024. The collected data were recorded and analyzed using pragmatic theory to understand the context and meaning of impolite comments. The findings reveal three main types of violations of the agreement maxim: identity, function, and actions of the police. First, the identity of the police, characterized by their brown uniforms, often becomes the target of criticism and satire, such as the term "brown party," reflecting public skepticism about the institution's neutrality. Second, the police's function as protectors, guardians, and enforcers of the law is questioned through comments indicating abuse of power and ethical violations. Third, police actions perceived as repressive or excessively violent lead to negative comments that damage the institution's image. These violations reflect a gap between the ideal role of the police and public expectations, exacerbated by ineffective communication, workplace cultures that fail to uphold integrity, and public distrust of the police institution. This study highlights the importance of understanding the agreement maxim to maintain polite communication on social media. As a recommendation, police institutions should enhance ethical education and professionalism, while the public is encouraged to provide more constructive criticism. Social media can also be utilized to build transparency and a positive image through active engagement between the police and the community. With these measures, it is expected that public trust in the police can be restored, and the quality of discussions on social media can improve. Keywords: impoliteness; agreement maxim; social media

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the representation of the speech disorder “stuttering” experienced by the character Glenn in the film Mendarat Darurat through a psycholinguistic approach. The data collection technique employed is in-depth observation of relevant scenes, along with transcription of Glenn’s stuttered dialogues. The research method applied is descriptive qualitative, which explains the phenomenon by describing the characteristics of the subject under study without applying any experimental treatment. The descriptive qualitative procedure includes data collection, data organization, and data interpretation. The data analysis technique used is the interactive analysis model by Miles and Huberman, which involves three main steps: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing/verification. The data analyzed in this study consist of dialogues containing stuttering, with the data source being the film Mendarat Darurat. The analysis results indicate that there are 18 excerpts/dialogues that influence both the character’s speech and behavior, offering insights into how speech disorders are represented in film media. It is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to the understanding of speech disorder representations in media and their impact on audience perception.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the cultural ecology of the short story anthology "Mata Blater". This collection was selected due to its representation of diverse Madurese customs, traditions, and values, which are infrequently explored by literary authors. The research employs a descriptive exploratory methodology and a cultural ecology approach, utilizing data in the form of literary text units pertaining to cultural ecology. The findings of this investigation demonstrate that this short story collection exhibits a strong correlation with culture and environment, such as karapan sapi, blater, tandak, celurit. Karapan sapi is a traditional bull racing event is not only a showcase of animal prowess but also serves as a celebration of community, culture, and agricultural identity. The preparation for the race involves elements of care for the bulls, emphasizing a relationship steeped in mutual respect and cultural significance. Blater comes from the Madurese language and can be literally translated as "brave" or "champion." However, its meaning and connotations are far more complex within the context of Madurese society. A blater is not merely a thug or a local strongman; they are a highly influential social figure with a dual role as an informal peacekeeper and, at times, a thug for personal gain. The blater represents an informal justice system thriving in a community that holds traditional values dear and reflects the unique social dynamics, beliefs, and power hierarchy within Madurese society. Tandak refers to a female dancer who performs at celebratory events, especially weddings. The role of a tandak is crucial in folk entertainment and has unique characteristics that set her apart from other dancers. A tandak becomes a central figure and a symbol of prosperity at a celebration. A key feature of the Madurese tandak is her interaction with the guests. They dance to the accompaniment of traditional Madurese music, such as saronen, and invite guests to dance with them. Guests who dance with the tandak usually give them a tip (money) as a form of appreciation. Celurit is a traditional sickle used for harvesting illustrates the connection between labor, agricultural practices, and respect for the land. The narratives surrounding celurit highlight the skills passed down through generations and convey the importance of sustainable practices in rice farming. The anthology suggests that these cultural practices embody a collective awareness regarding the interplay of culture, nature, and human well-being. Collectively, these stories emphasize how Madurese people respect, utilize, and preserve their cultural and environmental heritage, underlining the intrinsic value of these interactions for community identity and environmental stewardship. Research has shown that communities around the world employ traditional agricultural practices that enhance biodiversity and ecosystem health, as highlighted in studies on sustainable farming methods. Evidence from environmental psychology suggests that exposure to natural environments can improve mental health and well-being, with studies indicating a positive correlation between time spent in nature and reduced stress levels. Additionally, anthropological research reveals that cultural rituals related to nature conservation can strengthen social ties and promote collective action for environmental protection. These findings underscore the significant role that culture, nature, and the environment play in contributing to human well-being.

Abstract

Reading is a fundamental tool for gleaning information and engaging in many fields of literacy. However, poor reading outcomes among Indonesian students on the PISA test indicate a low literacy level. The reading ability referred to in this study is the ability to understand reading texts on various topics and forms. This study used a sample of 234 students from eight schools in North Kalimantan Province. The data were obtained from reading tests carried out by students via computers. The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions, short answers, and essays. The data was processed in several stages, including data reduction and item calibration using the Rasch Model. Apart from reading tests, data were also obtained through questionnaires to gather information about literacy activities carried out by students at school and at home. The results showed that nationally the average reading literacy ability of students in North Kalimantan Province was at a low level, namely at score 349, while the highest reading literacy ability average score in Indonesia was 489. The results also showed that there was a relationship between students' reading literacy skills and their conditions and habits at home. As a recommendation, students need to be more accustomed to reading multimodal texts through multimedia devices. It is important to make them capable of understanding texts containing not only words, but also pictures, numbers, graphs, and tables as demands for modern literacy. Moreover, parents also need to be to encourage to help improve the students’ literacy capacity.

Abstract

Marriage is a fundamental aspect of the human life cycle, serving not only as a sacred union between two individuals but also as a cultural tradition rich in symbolism and profound philosophical meanings passed down through generations. In Javanese culture, wedding ceremonies are more than mere rituals; they embody complex philosophies reflected through various elements called 'ubarampe' or ceremonial accessories used during traditional wedding processions. These ubarampe consist of various items that carry specific symbolic functions, collectively demonstrating the synergy of cultural and philosophical values within the community, especially in Boja Village, Kendal, Central Java. They serve as representations of the relationship between humans, nature, and divine principles, emphasizing harmony and balance—core concepts in Javanese cosmology—where elements such as water, fire, earth, and air symbolize fundamental aspects of life and the universe. Notably, earth and water dominate the ubarampe, symbolizing stability, fertility, and continuity, reflecting the community's view that success and harmony in marriage depend on maintaining equilibrium among these elements. This philosophy underscores the importance of humans aligning themselves with natural forces to achieve a harmonious and blessed life. Studying these symbols and their meanings reveals how traditional cultural practices strengthen local identity, preserve heritage, and foster a deeper understanding of life’s interconnectedness, emphasizing that cultural preservation is vital for sustaining community identity and ensuring the continuity of ancestral wisdom in contemporary society.

Abstract

The term machismo, originating from Chicano culture, refers to the construction of masculinity among Chicano men. The Chicano identity itself emerged from the migration of Mexicans to the United States, a process that began with the shifting of the border between Mexico and the U.S. This historical context gave rise to a new cultural identity, including a distinctive form of machismo among Chicano men. This study aims to analyze the representation of machismo in Chicano men as depicted in Luis Alberto Urrea’s The House of Broken Angels. To conduct the analysis, the study employs Bacca Zinn’s theory to explore the meaning of machismo in Chicano culture alongside Stuart Hall’s theory of representation. Methodologically, this research applies a descriptive qualitative approach using library research, with data drawn from the novel’s narration and dialogues. The findings suggest that The House of Broken Angels portrays Chicano machismo as rooted in traditional Mexican masculinity while simultaneously reflecting the cultural identity of Chicano men.

Abstract

The Presidential Election in Indonesia has always been a major event that gives rise to various aspects of communication. The Mata Najwa talk show edition “3 Presidential Candidates Discuss Ideas” received significant attention from the public and observers. This study aims to explain the forms of violations, the pragmatic functions of the violations, and the factors influencing the occurrence of violations of the cooperative principle in the Mata Najwa on Stage Yogyakarta edition “3 Presidential Candidates Discuss Ideas.” This research is a descriptive qualitative study. Data analysis employed a pragmatic equivalent approach. Based on the percentage, Anies Baswedan most frequently adhered to the cooperative principle, namely 29 times (72.50%), whereas Prabowo Subianto most frequently violated the cooperative principle, namely 15 times (38.46%). The pragmatic functions identified were assertive, directive, and expressive. The violations of the cooperative principle were in the form of violations of the maxims of quantity, quality, relevance, and manner. The factors influencing the occurrence of violations of the cooperative principle were sustaining communication, modesty, providing additional information, concealing messages/contradictions/predictions, covering up intentions, and preserving reputation. These findings contribute to the advancement of political discourse research by revealing how presidential candidates strategically employ conversational violations to achieve specific communicative goals, offering practical insights for understanding political communication strategies and their effects on public perception during electoral processes.

Abstract

The development of popular culture lately has an impact on local culture which is starting to be  abandoned, especially by the younger generation. Like kesenian Kubro in Ngasinan Village,  Purworejo, which was abandoned because there was no longer public enthusiasm for that art.  Kubro in Ngasinan Village has been preserved again by Grup Kesenian Kubro Tujuh Bidadari by  combining Kubro with dangdut rhythms to suit the tastes of the community. This effort is a big  thing in preserving local culture. Especially with the involvement of children who are the nation's  next generation in this effort. Thus, Kubro can be a representation of nationalism through regional  arts that are adapted to the times without losing the identity of the art. In this study, visual and  non-visual signs that represent nationalism will be analyzed. The method used in this study is a  qualitative descriptive method with a semiological approach. Based on the results of the analysis,  there are representations of nationalism found in dance moves, the costumes of dancers, and  Kubro’s song lyrics in Purworejo Regency. Based on the results of the analysis, it is hoped that the  main purpose of this art as an effort to preserve a local culture that represents nationalism as well  as entertainment for the community can be fulfilled.
