Abstract

How to Build Mathematical Abilities in Deaf Students? A Grounded Theory. Objective: This study aims to produce a conceptual model as a strategy for building mathematical abilities in deaf students. Methods: This is qualitative research with a grounded theory design involving 45 deaf students from four middle schools in Indonesia. Findings: The results of the data analysis at the open coding stage obtained five categories of visual, feeling, understanding, learning experience, and habits in learning mathematics. At the axial coding stage, mathematical understanding was used as the core category. While at the selective coding stage, a conceptual model was built where each category contributes to building mathematical abilities. Conclusion: That efforts are crucial to develop the mathematical abilities of deaf students comprehensively. This can be done by visualizing the problems, connecting the problems with the student environment, providing learning experiences with various questions, giving motivation, and increasing self-confidence using praise and more attention from parents or teachers. Keywords: deaf student, grounded theory, mathematical abilities.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202240

Abstract

Improving the students’ creative thinking skills using problem based worksheet on the topic of environmental pollution. Objectives: This research aims to investigate the effectiveness of problem based worksheet to improve students’ creative thinking skills on the topic of environmental pollution. Methods: Creative thinking skills were measured using four indicators: fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration. The research was designed using the matching only pretestpostest control group design. The data of creative thinking skills were collected from pretest and posttest and analyzed using statistical analysis such as normality, homogeneity, t-test, and Mann-Whitney test. Findings: Students’ elaboration skill showed the highest improvement related to the effect size (0.92) and n-gain value (0.73). Conclusion: The problem based worksheet is effective to improve students’ creative thinking skill. Keywords: Worksheet, problem based learning, creative thinking skill. DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v8.i2.201814

Abstract

Motivational Factors to Become Teacher in Economic Education Students from Villages and Cities. Objective: Research was conducted to determine differences in motivation factors to become teachers among Economic Education students in Central Java based on place of residence. Method: The research sample was 149 students from the UNS, UNNES and UNSOED Economic Education Study Program who had undertaken internships at schools. Test analysis technique uses Independent Sample T-Test. Findings: The research results show a significance value of 0.00, less than 0.05. This means, there are different factors that motivate rural and urban students to pursue a career as teachers because socio-cultural differences. Conclusion: There level of prospective teachers from villages who are superior in all motives (intrinsic, extrinsic and altruistic). The social dissuasion indicator for urban teacher candidates is higher, while the indicators salary, high demands, career fallback, teaching and learning experience the exhibit similar levels for all respondents. Keywords: teacher, motivation, city,village.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v13.i3.202336

Abstract

Analyzing the Mathematical Critical Thinking Skills of High School Students in Arithmetic: A Gender Differences. Objective: The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the mathematical critical thinking abilities of senior high school pupils in the field of arithmetic in relation to gender. In particular, it examines the critical thinking patterns of male and female pupils at varying ability levels (high, medium, and low) using four primary indicators: interpretation, analysis, evaluation, and inference. Methods: A qualitative descriptive methodology was implemented. A purposive selection of six tenth-grade students was made from a pool of 31 participants based on the results of an initial critical thinking test. These six pupils represented all three ability categories and both genders. Critical thinking essay assessments, semi-structured interviews, and classroom observations were implemented to accumulate data. The data was analyzed using source triangulation, reduction, and categorization in accordance with Facione's indicators. Findings: The findings indicated that female students exhibited more systematic and circumspect approaches, which led to their success in interpretation and analysis. In contrast, male pupils were more responsive but less meticulous and reflective. In terms of evaluation, the majority of students in all categories did not assess their work, which suggests that they have inadequate metacognitive abilities. Despite the fact that their final answers were accurate, numerous students were unable to articulate explicit conclusions regarding inference. High-ability students exhibited strategic planning and reflective thinking, whereas low-ability students relied on procedural and rote-based methods. Conclusion: The study emphasizes the significance of instructional strategies that are responsive to ability and gender. Integrating mathematical communication, reflection, and explicit training in evaluation and inference are critical components of effective teaching strategies that promote the development of critical thinking. According to the results, female students are more structured and reflective, whereas male students are more evaluative but less quickly. The necessity of instructional designs that are consistent with the unique characteristics of students is suggested by the fact that these differences are influenced by cognitive styles, confidence levels, and learning patterns. Keywords: mathematical critical thinking skills, high school students, gender.

Abstract

The purpose of writing this article is to find out solutions in managing conflict in Indonesian Islamic education institutions. In particular, Islamic educational institutions in Islamic boarding schools and madrasas have a high probability of conflict compared to other educational institutions. This research is applying qualitative research through library research. The data obtained are compiled, analyzed, and concluded so as to obtain conclusions regarding the study of literature. The results of this study indicate that conflict management becomes very important in managing conflict in Islamic educational institutions as the development of quality educational institutions. In line with this, then what becomes our main concern in addressing conflict is that conflict cannot be avoided. Therefore, controlling conflict is a must in order to achieve goals in Islamic educational institutions in Indonesia. Conflict must be managed properly in order to create the goals of higher education institutions. In addition, conflict management is a solution to balance existing conflicts. Keywords: conflict management, islamic education institutions.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.23960/jpp.v12.i2.202208
