Abstract

This study aimed to determine whether word wall media can enhance vocabulary mastery among seventh-grade students in class 7D at SMP ADVENT UNKLAB AIRMADIDI during the second semester of the 2023/2024 academic year. The research was conducted over two cycles using Classroom Action Research of the Kemmis and McTaggart design, which includes four phases: planning, acting, observing, and reflecting. The participants comprised 34 students (26 males and 8 females). Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests to assess vocabulary mastery. The pre-test results showed that only 29% of students (10 students) met the minimum mastery criteria (MMC) score of 70. After implementing word wall media in Cycle 1, the post-test revealed a significant improvement, with 47% (16 students) achieving mastery. However, this still did not meet the success indicator of 80%. In Cycle 2, following further treatment, the post-test results improved dramatically to 88%, with 30 students achieving mastery. This indicates that the use of word wall media significantly enhances students' vocabulary mastery. The study recommends that English teachers incorporate word wall media into their instructional strategies to improve vocabulary outcomes.

Abstract

Mathematics learning outcomes are optimal when an individual reaches a level of achievement that aligns with their potential and abilities. The factors that influence student learning outcomes come from two main aspects: external factors and internal factors. External factors include the influence of family, school, and the community environment, while internal factors encompass psychological dimensions, physical conditions, and the student's level of fatigue. This research analyzes the factors influencing mathematics learning outcomes through the internal locus of control as a mediator. The type of research is a survey with a quantitative approach. The research location was carried out at SMAN 2 Kediri City. The population of this study were all class XI students of SMAN 2 Kediri City. The sampling technique is simple random sampling, with a sample size of 100 SMAN 2 Kediri City students. Data collection techniques use family socioeconomic status questionnaires, psychological distress questionnaires, internal locus of control questionnaires, and third-semester student report cards. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistical analysis and inferential statistics. The research results show that (1) family socioeconomic status influences mathematics learning outcomes, (2) psychological distress influences mathematics learning outcomes, (3) internal locus of control influences mathematics learning outcomes, (4) internal locus of control cannot mediate between family socioeconomic status and mathematics learning outcomes, (5) internal locus of control can mediate between psychological distress and mathematics learning outcomes, and (6) the model in the research is acceptable.

Abstract

Ethnomathematics is the study of mathematics from various cultural forms, allowing communities to discover and explore mathematical concepts within their culture. Cultural values of mathematics can be utilized in mathematics education. This research aims to identify the mathematical concepts found in Pura Kerta Bhuwana Giri Wilis Nganjuk and use them as components in preparing mathematics modules for seventh-grade junior high school students. Pura Kerta Bhuwana Giri Wilis is in the Loceret District of Nganjuk Regency. This temple has a strong traditional Javanese architectural style, featuring tiered roofs, relief decorations, and ornaments that symbolize Hindu beliefs. This research uses qualitative research with an ethnographic approach. Data collection through interviews was conducted to understand the history, philosophy, and components of Pura Kerta Bhuwana Giri Wilis Nganjuk. Observation and documentation were carried out to analyze the mathematical elements in the parts of the Pura. The research results show that Pura Kerta Bhuwana Giri Wilis contains mathematical concepts such as flat shapes (squares, rectangles, triangles, trapezoids, rhombuses), three-dimensional shapes (rectangular pyramids, rectangular prisms, cylinders), and geometric transformations (reflection and rotation). Using the Self-Directing Learning model, the mathematical concepts are then implemented into the Lesson Plan (RPP). The Self-Directing Learning model consists of three steps: Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluating. Ethnomathematics from Pura Kerta Bhuwana Giri Wilis are expected to enhance students' understanding of mathematics and develop learning media based on local culture.

Abstract

Life within Huma Betang teaches the importance of accepting and respecting differences, maintaining harmony, and prioritizing the common good over personal interests. Elementary education, as the foundation of character building, plays a strategic role in instilling the multicultural values embodied in the Huma Betang philosophy. The limited literature and scholarly studies discussing the implementation of multicultural values based on local culture in elementary school settings, particularly those focusing on Huma Betang, represent a gap that needs to be addressed through research and curriculum development. This study was conducted using a qualitative approach with a phenomenological method to observe the cognitive and character changes experienced by students through their interactions with learning components explored in their natural form. The findings of this study indicate that the multicultural values of the Huma Betang philosophy, such as tolerance, togetherness, mutual cooperation, and mutual respect, have been effectively implemented in shaping the character of students at SDN 6 Bukit Tunggal, Palangka Raya. These values are not only applied in non-academic activities like mutual cooperation but also in students' daily interactions, creating a harmonious atmosphere amid cultural diversity.

Abstract

With the rapid advancement of information and communication technology (ICT), mobile devices have become increasingly integrated into educational environments. This paper focuses on the use of WhatsApp, a popular messaging app, as a powerful tool for enhancing English language learning by efficiently managing student tasks. It presents an instructional model that incorporates four key English language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—through WhatsApp. This model allows both students and teachers to explore the practicalities, challenges, and achievements associated with using WhatsApp for academic tasks, both during and outside of school hours. The instructional model utilizes WhatsApp in both synchronous and asynchronous modes, offering flexibility in delivering content. Activities for each language skill leverage WhatsApp's capabilities, such as voice notes, text messaging, and multimedia sharing, to enhance the learning experience. This model fosters real-time communication and enables students to practice their language skills even in resource-limited environments. This instructional model implies that WhatsApp is a valuable tool for language teaching, especially for educators with low digital literacy. Its accessibility and flexibility allow for the continuation of education in difficult circumstances. Besides, the instructional model presented provides a framework that can be adapted by English teachers for various learning contexts, supporting both synchronous and asynchronous learning environments.
