Abstract

This study aims to analyze service quality and consumer behavior among Generation Z customers visiting coffeeshops in Makassar using the SERVQUAL and Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA) models. The research adopts a quantitative descriptive approach with a sample of 100 Gen Z respondents who frequently visit popular and social media–visible coffeeshops. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire adapted from the SERVQUAL framework developed by Parasuraman et al. (1988), comprising 22 indicators distributed across five dimensions: tangibles, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The validity and reliability tests confirmed all indicators were valid (r > 0.197) and reliable (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.903 for perception, 0.866 for expectation). The SERVQUAL analysis revealed negative gap values in all dimensions, indicating that service performance has not fully met customer expectations. The largest gap appeared in responsiveness (–0.49), showing that service promptness and attentiveness require improvement, while tangibles (–0.13) and assurance (–0.05) were relatively better. The IPA results mapped responsiveness indicators into the “Concentrate Here” quadrant, highlighting the need for managerial action, while tangibles and empathy were placed in “Keep Up the Good Work.” Overall, the findings emphasize that Gen Z consumers value fast, interactive, and personalized service experiences, underscoring the urgency for coffeeshop managers to enhance operational agility and technological adaptation to strengthen satisfaction and loyalty.

Abstract

: This study examines the impact of board gender diversity, board size, and the presence of a critical mass of women on corporate boards on both financial and ESG performance in Indonesian publicly listed firms between 2020 and 2024. Using a fixed effects panel regression on a balanced dataset of 51 firms observed over five years, the analysis reveals a nuanced relationship between governance structures and firm outcomes. The results show that board gender diversity has a positive and significant effect on ESG performance, supporting the argument that female directors contribute perspectives that enhance corporate responsibility. However, the critical mass hypothesis is not supported, indicating that numerical thresholds alone are insufficient to drive change. Board size is positively and significantly associated with both ESG performance and Tobin’s Q, while neither gender diversity nor board size has a measurable impact on accounting-based indicators such as ROA and ROE. These findings challenge the universal applicability of Critical Mass Theory, suggesting that its influence may be constrained in emerging markets such as Indonesia, where cultural and institutional factors limit the effectiveness of female representation. Overall, the study contributes to the governance–performance literature by demonstrating that the benefits of board diversity are context-specific and vary across performance measures.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the influence of financial ratios on stock price movements of nickel mining companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) from 2020 to 2024. Indicators used in the analysis include Return on Equity (ROE), Earnings per Share (EPS), Debt to Equity Ratio (DER), Price Earning Ratio (PER), and Price to Book Value (PBV), which represent aspects of profitability, solvency, and market valuation of the company. A quantitative approach was used in this study by processing secondary data in the form of annual financial reports from issuers that met the selection criteria. The results showed that each company has a different performance pattern based on the five ratios, where ANTM shows stability and growth, TINS presents high volatility, while INCO excels in a conservative financial structure. These findings are expected to serve as a reference for investors in making decisions based on fundamental analysis, as well as provide additional references for management and academics in assessing the dynamics of the nickel industry in Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to examine and analyze the influence of macroeconomic inflation on the profitability performance of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk during the 2018–2023 period. Profitability is a key indicator of a company’s financial health, and understanding how it responds to macroeconomic fluctuations is essential, particularly in the mining industry, which is highly sensitive to global and domestic economic conditions. This research employs a quantitative approach using simple linear regression analysis, supported by secondary data consisting of company financial statements and annual inflation data retrieved from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) and Bank Indonesia. Several classical assumption tests were conducted, including normality, autocorrelation, and multicollinearity tests. The results show that the data are normally distributed and free from multicollinearity; however, the model exhibits positive autocorrelation, indicating that the residuals are not fully independent across time. The regression analysis reveals that inflation has a negative influence on the company’s profitability, measured by Return on Assets (ROA). Nevertheless, this relationship is not statistically significant, as reflected by a significance value of 0.677 (> 0.05). Furthermore, the coefficient of determination (R²) of 0.066 and an adjusted R² of -0.245 indicate that inflation explains only 6.6% of the variation in ROA, while the remaining 93.4% is influenced by other internal and external variables not included in this model. Overall, the findings suggest that inflation does not have a significant impact on the profitability of PT Vale Indonesia Tbk during the study period, implying that the company’s financial performance may be more strongly affected by operational efficiency, commodity prices, production volume, and other macroeconomic indicators beyond inflation.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the construction of an optimal investment portfolio using the Markowitz Model for stocks listed in the LQ-45 index. The LQ-45 stocks were chosen because they represent leading and highly liquid companies on the Indonesia Stock Exchange, consisting of diverse industrial sectors that provide broad opportunities for risk reduction through diversification. The research method includes the calculation of expected returns, standard deviations as a measure of risk, and covariance among selected stocks to examine the interrelationship of asset movements. These components are then used to determine the optimal portfolio composition that offers the maximum possible return for a given level of risk or, conversely, minimizes risk for a targeted expected return. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the Markowitz Model is effective in forming portfolios that align with different investor risk preferences. The diversification effect generated by combining stocks across various sectors significantly reduces unsystematic risk without diminishing return potential. The findings also indicate that an optimal portfolio constructed using this method can serve as a practical and strategic investment alternative for both individual and institutional investors, particularly in a volatile market environment. Furthermore, this study provides valuable insights into portfolio selection strategies that can support investment managers in developing evidence-based decision-making frameworks. By applying modern portfolio theory, investors can better understand risk–return trade-offs and improve the efficiency of their investment allocations in the Indonesian capital market.

Abstract

This study aims to compare financial risk management between conventional and Shariah banks in Indonesia. Financial risk is measured using three key indicators: Net Interest Margin (NIM) as a proxy for market risk, Current Ratio (CR) for liquidity risk, and Non-Performing Loan (NPL) for credit risk. The study employs the Mann–Whitney U Test to examine differences between the two types of banks using a sample of conventional and Shariah banks registered in Indonesia. The results indicate no significant differences between conventional and Shariah banks in terms of NIM and CR, although Shariah banks exhibit a higher yet more volatile NIM and a more stable CR. However, a significant difference is found in NPL, where Shariah banks display higher NPL ratios than conventional banks. These findings suggest that although both types of banks differ in their approaches to managing market and liquidity risks, Shariah banks are more vulnerable to credit risk, as reflected in their higher NPL levels. This study is expected to provide insights for banks and regulators to enhance risk management in both banking systems and serve as a foundation for developing more effective risk management policies in the conventional and Shariah banking sectors.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of work-life balance and job satisfaction on employee performance at PT. Bank Sulselbar. The research is grounded in the view that, in an era of digital transformation and increasing performance demands, employees’ ability to harmonize work and personal roles, as well as their satisfaction with various aspects of their job, is crucial for maintaining optimal performance. A quantitative verificative approach was employed with a sample of 52 employees selected using accidental sampling from a total population of 514 staff. Data were collected through structured questionnaires using a five-point Likert scale and supported by documentation of company records. The variables examined include work-life balance and job satisfaction as independent variables, and employee performance as the dependent variable. Data analysis involved validity and reliability testing, classical assumption tests, and multiple linear regression, complemented by t-tests and F-tests at a 5% significance level. The results show that work-life balance has a positive and significant effect on employee performance, indicating that employees who experience better balance between work and personal life tend to demonstrate higher productivity and work quality. Job satisfaction also has a positive and significant effect on employee performance, suggesting that satisfied employees are more motivated, committed, and engaged in their tasks. Simultaneously, work-life balance and job satisfaction explain 47.8% of the variance in employee performance, while the remaining 52.2% is influenced by other factors not examined in this study. These findings underscore the strategic importance of designing human resource policies that support employee well-being and satisfaction to enhance organizational performance.

Abstract

This study examines the cultural politics of culinary tourism in Makassar City, Indonesia, focusing on how ethnic cuisines function as both cultural representations and economic commodities. Employing a qualitative, interpretive approach grounded in cultural anthropology, the research analyzes secondary data from academic studies, tourism reports, and field observations to explore how authenticity, identity, and power intersect in Makassar’s evolving foodscape. The findings reveal that the city government and private stakeholders strategically promote dishes such as Coto Makassar, Pallubasa, Konro, and Pisang Epe as symbols of local heritage, while other traditional foods remain marginalized. This selective representation reflects institutional power in shaping narratives of authenticity and modernity. Culinary tourism in Makassar simultaneously preserves and commodifies cultural heritage, strengthening urban branding yet risking cultural simplification. Globalization, market adaptation, and the influence of food franchises such as Mie Gacoan further contribute to the homogenization of local cuisine. Nonetheless, local initiatives rooted in Bugis-Makassar culinary traditions continue to assert cultural resilience through the use of traditional ingredients and local wisdom. The study concludes that sustainable culinary tourism in Makassar requires inclusive governance and participatory cultural representation, ensuring that local communities maintain agency in defining their food heritage. Food, therefore, emerges as both sustenance and a medium for negotiating identity, power, and heritage in an increasingly globalized tourism economy.

Abstract

This study explores the phenomenon of secondhand consumption among students at Universitas Negeri Makassar (UNM) through Alfred Schutz’s phenomenological framework. The research aims to uncover the motivational dimensions that shape students’ engagement with secondhand goods as part of their urban lifestyle. Using a qualitative approach and phenomenological design, the study focuses on understanding the subjective meanings behind students’ thrifting behavior. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participant observation, and social media documentation at several major secondhand markets and thrift shops in Makassar. The analysis, following Schutz’s typifications of “because of motive” and “in order to motive”, revealed four central themes: economic efficiency, self-identity expression, environmental awareness, and the influence of digital communities. Findings indicate that thrifting among UNM students is not merely a cost-saving strategy but a reflective social practice that integrates aesthetic creativity, moral consciousness, and sustainability values. Moreover, social media serves as a cultural catalyst that transforms secondhand consumption into a medium for identity construction and digital participation. The study concludes that thrifting functions as a multidimensional cultural strategy through which students negotiate modernity, sustainability, and self-expression within the dynamic urban culture of Makassar.

Abstract

The digitalisation of commerce has introduced the phenomenon of dark pattern marketing, which manipulates consumer decisions through strategic interface design. This research explores the implementation, perception, and ethical implications of dark patterns on the Shopee platform for university students in Makassar City, who are active digital consumers. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with semi-structured interviews of ten active Shopee-using students, the study identified six dominant dark pattern categories: false urgency, hidden costs, forced continuity, confirm shaming, trick questions, and obstruction. Findings show false urgency is the most prevalent tactic, affecting all participants and creating a 'fear of missing out' that drives impulsive purchases. A paradox of awareness was revealed, where only 40% of students recognised the design manipulation, despite being highly educated digital natives. The economic impact reaches IDR 150,000–IDR 400,000 per month per individual through overspending and unplanned purchases. The ethical implications indicate fundamental breaches of the principles of honesty, transparency, and consumer autonomy, resulting in significant erosion of trust, with 60% of participants stating an intention to reduce their shopping activity. This research affirms that dark patterns are not merely a technical issue but a business ethics problem threatening the sustainability of the e-commerce ecosystem. Recommendations include the adoption of ethical design by platforms, strengthening digital consumer protection regulations, integrating consumer literacy into higher education, and multi-stakeholder collaboration to create a fair and transparent digital ecosystem.
