Areas of study at the intersection of linguistics and education include, but are not limited to: sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, critical discourse analysis, conversation analysis, linguistic anthropology, ethnography of communication, language socialization, narrative studies, gesture/sign/visual forms of communication, social semiotics, literacy studies, language policy, language ideology, functional grammar or text/corpus linguistics. WIDYANTARA is a research-oriented journal. Papers may address practical and policy implications for education but must be built on robust research and have a strong conceptual grounding in their analyses and discussions. Linguistics and Education welcomes papers from across disciplinary and interdisciplinary research traditions that reflect principled application of qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methodological paradigms and research designs (e.g. case studies, ethnographic fieldwork, experimental/semi-experimental studies, etc.). Papers must be relevant to an international readership.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menganalisis citra perempuan dalam film Gadis Kretek karya Ratih Kumala dengan menggunakan pendekatan feminis marxis. Penelitian ini berangkat dari permasalahan representasi perempuan yang berada dalam posisi subordinat akibat struktur sosial, politik, dan ekonomi yang berakar pada patriarki dan kapitalisme. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mendeskripsikan bagaimana citra perempuan, khususnya tokoh Jeng Yah, ditampilkan melalui aspek fisik, psikis, sosial, politik, dan ekonomi dalam film. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif melalui teknik pengumpulan data berupa pencatatan adegan, dialog, dan konteks visual yang relevan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perempuan dalam film digambarkan menghadapi berbagai bentuk penindasan struktural, seperti pembatasan ruang gerak, dominasi keputusan laki-laki, eksploitasi ekonomi, serta tekanan sosial yang memengaruhi citra diri mereka. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa representasi perempuan dalam film Gadis Kretek memperlihatkan relasi kuasa yang tidak seimbang serta upaya perempuan dalam menghadapi ketidakadilan struktural. This study analyzes the representation of women in the film Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala using a Marxist feminist approach. The study originates from the issue of women’s subordination caused by social, political, and economic structures rooted in patriarchy and capitalism. The objective of this article is to describe how women—particularly the character Jeng Yah—are portrayed through physical, psychological, social, political, and economic dimensions in the film. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method, with data collected through the observation and documentation of relevant scenes, dialogues, and visual contexts. The findings indicate that women in the film experience various forms of structural oppression, including restricted mobility, male-dominated decision-making, economic exploitation, and social pressures that influence their self-image. These results reveal that the representation of women in Gadis Kretek reflects unequal power relations and highlights women's efforts to resist systemic injustices.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan bentuk, fungsi, dan makna struktur kalimat dalam novel Manuk Prenjak Mabur ing Pengging (MPMP) karya Endang Wiryanti melalui pendekatan sintaksis dan semantik. Novel berbahasa Jawa ini menampilkan kekhasan struktur sintaksis yang merefleksikan nilai budaya, tradisi tutur, serta pandangan hidup masyarakat Pengging. Metode penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif-deskriptif dengan teknik baca dan catat. Data berupa kalimat, frasa, dan klausa dalam narasi maupun dialog dianalisis melalui tiga tahap: klasifikasi bentuk sintaksis, analisis fungsi dan peran struktur kalimat dalam narasi, serta interpretasi makna berdasarkan konteks budaya Jawa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel MPMP memanfaatkan pola sintaksis beragam, meliputi kalimat sederhana, kalimat majemuk, elipsis, inversi, penggunaan partikel khas bahasa Jawa, serta pola repetisi yang kuat. Struktur sintaksis tersebut tidak hanya berfungsi menyampaikan pesan naratif, tetapi juga menjadi sarana estetik yang memperkuat karakterisasi tokoh, suasana batin, serta nilai moral dan kearifan lokal. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi dalam memahami keterkaitan antara struktur sintaksis, makna naratif, dan konteks budaya dalam karya sastra berbahasa Jawa, serta memperkaya kajian linguistik dan stilistika dalam ranah sastra daerah. This study aims to describe the forms, functions, and meanings of sentence structures found in Endang Wiryanti’s Javanese novel Manuk Prenjak Mabur ing Pengging (MPMP) through syntactic and semantic approaches. The novel exhibits distinctive syntactic patterns that reflect cultural values, speech traditions, and the worldview of the Pengging community. Employing a qualitative-descriptive method, the data were collected through reading and note-taking techniques. Sentences, phrases, and clauses from both narration and dialogue were analyzed through three stages: (1) classification of syntactic forms, (2) analysis of the functions and narrative roles of the structures, and (3) interpretation of meaning within the cultural context of Javanese society. The findings reveal that MPMP employs a wide range of syntactic patterns, including simple sentences, complex sentences, ellipsis, inversion, the use of Javanese particles, and stylistic repetition. These syntactic patterns not only convey narrative messages but also function aesthetically to strengthen character depiction, emotional atmosphere, and moral as well as cultural values embedded in the text. Therefore, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of the relationships between syntactic structures, narrative meaning, and cultural context in Javanese literary works, enriching linguistic and stylistic studies within regional literature.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengembangkan dan mengevaluasi efektivitas metode pembelajaran kreatif yang terintegrasi dengan mode pertanyaan eksploratif dalam meningkatkan keterampilan membaca siswa kelas tinggi di Kabupaten Garut. Menggunakan pendekatan Design-Based Research (DBR), penelitian dilakukan di tiga kecamatan: Garut Kota, Limbangan, dan Bungbulang, melibatkan 60 hingga 90 siswa serta beberapa guru berpengalaman dengan minimal 15 tahun di bidang pendidikan. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan DBR. Instrumen pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah latihan di kelas, wawancara, dan observasi dalam kerangka waktu tertentu. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara wawancara semistruktural dengan siswa dan guru dengan penerapan metode pembelajaran kreatif yang terintegrasi dengan mode pertanyaan eksploratif secara signifikan meningkatkan keterampilan membaca siswa kelas tinggi di Kabupaten Garut. Dari analisis data kuantitatif, tercatat adanya peningkatan yang signifikan dalam rata-rata skor keterampilan membaca siswa, dari 60 pada pre-test menjadi 80 pada post-test. Selain itu, hasil analisis kualitatif melalui wawancara dengan siswa dan guru mengungkapkan bahwa keterlibatan siswa, kesenangan dalam belajar, dan dukungan guru berkontribusi signifikan terhadap efektivitas pembelajaran. This study aims to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a creative learning method integrated with an exploratory inquiry model in improving the reading skills of upper-grade students in Garut Regency. Using a Design-Based Research (DBR) approach, the study was conducted in three sub-districts: Garut City, Limbangan, and Bungbulang, involving 60 to 90 students and several experienced teachers with at least 15 years of experience in education. This study employed a qualitative DBR approach. Data collection instruments included classroom exercises, interviews, and observations over a specific period. Data collection was conducted through semi-structured interviews with students and teachers. The implementation of a creative learning method integrated with an exploratory inquiry model significantly improved the reading skills of upper-grade students in Garut Regency. Quantitative data analysis recorded a significant increase in the average score of students' reading skills, from 60 in the pre-test to 80 in the post-test. Furthermore, qualitative analysis, conducted through interviews with students and teachers, revealed that student engagement, enjoyment in learning, and teacher support significantly contributed to learning effectiveness.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis representasi nilai budaya suku Baduy pada film Ambu karya sutradara Farid Dermawan, serta untuk mengeksplorasi potensi film tersebut sebagai modul ajar sastra di kelas XI. Jenis penelitian ini metode kualitatif dengan desain deksriptif kualitatif. Pendekatan yang digunakan pendekatan semiotika Roland Barthes. Teknik pengumpulan data berupa dokumentasi dan studi pustaka. Instrumen penelitian ini berupa kartu data serta keabsahan data yang digunakan yakni objektivitas, kesahihan internal, kesahihan eksternal, dan keterandalan. Teknik untuk menganalisis data meliputi reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan simpulan. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian representasi nilai budaya suku Baduy pada film Ambu terdapat 32 data yang menunjukkan nilai budaya suku Baduy, di antaranya 5 data nilai peduli lingkungan, 3 data nilai bekerja sama, 8 data nilai ketaatan terhadap hukum, 10 data nilai kesederhanaan dan kemandirian, 3 data nilai demokratis, dan 3 data nilai kejujuran.  Selain itu, analisis mendalam terhadap film memberikan wawasan yang berharga bagi pemanfaatan modul ajar sastra SMA/MA/SMK kelas XI, khususnya pada nilai budaya untuk diimplikasikan dalam kehidupan sehari-hari. This study aims to analyze the representation of Baduy cultural values ​​in the film Ambu by director Farid Dermawan, and to explore the potential of the film as a literature teaching module in grade XI. This type of research is a qualitative method with a qualitative descriptive design. The approach used is Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. Data collection techniques include documentation and literature studies. The research instrument is in the form of data cards and the validity of the data used is objectivity, internal validity, external validity, and reliability. Techniques for analyzing data include reduction, presentation, and drawing conclusions. Based on the results of the study of the representation of Baduy cultural values ​​in the film Ambu, there are 32 data that show the cultural values ​​of the Baduy tribe, including 5 data on environmental care values, 3 data on cooperation values, 8 data on obedience to the law values, 10 data on simplicity and independence values, 3 data on democratic values, and 3 data on honesty values. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the film provides valuable insights for the use of literature teaching modules for SMA/MA/SMK class XI, especially on cultural values ​​to be implied in everyday life.

Abstract

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah menghasilkan produk media pembelajaran yang dapat dijadikan sebagai alternatif media dalam meningkatkan rasa antusias dan pemahaman siswa dalam pembelajaran bahasa Indonesia. Penelitian dilaksanakan di SMP Negeri 2 Plered Kabupaten Cirebon. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode research and development (R&D) dan model ADDIE dalam pengembangan media pembelajaran. Hasil validasi ahli media terhadap seluruh aspek yang dinilai diperoleh persentase sebesar 84% masuk dalam kriteria “Sangat Layak”. Sedangkan hasil validasi ahli materi terhadap seluruh aspek yang dinilai diperoleh persentase sebesar 90% termasuk dalam kriteria “Sangat Layak”. Selain itu, media pembelajaran pop-up book digital pada materi teks naratif dapat dijadikan sebagai upaya dalam menarik perhatian dan rasa antusias siswa dalam kegiatan belajar, sehingga dapat meningkatkan pemahaman siswa kelas VII SMP Negeri 2 Plered dalam pembelajaran materi unsur-unsur teks naratif. The purpose of this study was to produce a learning media product that can be used as an alternative media in increasing students' enthusiasm and understanding in learning Indonesian. The study was conducted at SMP Negeri 2 Plered, Cirebon Regency. This study used the research and development (R&D) method and the ADDIE model in developing learning media. The results of the media expert validation of all aspects assessed obtained a percentage of 84% included in the "Very Eligible" criteria. While the results of the material expert validation of all aspects assessed obtained a percentage of 90% included in the "Very Eligible" criteria. In addition, digital pop-up book learning media on narrative text material can be used as an effort to attract students' attention and enthusiasm in learning activities, so that it can improve the understanding of class VII students of SMP Negeri 2 Plered in learning the elements of narrative text.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk (1) mendeskripsikan fungsi persahabatan yang terkandung dalam kumpulan cerpen karya Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, Mira Widjaya, dan (2) mendeskripsikan pemanfaatan nilai dan fungsi persahabatan dalam pengembangan modul ajar cerpen berbasis kurikulum merdeka di SMK fase F pada kumpulan cerpen karya Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, dan Mira Widjaya. Penelitian menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Sumber data dalam penelitian melalui dokumen kumpulan cerpen karya Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, dan Mira Widjaya, serta informan yang meliputi guru bahasa Indonesia, siswa kelas XI SMK Warga Surakarta, dan Sarjana Psikologi. Teknik pengambilan sampel menggunakan purposive sampling. Teknik pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui wawancara dan analisis dokumen. Teknik uji validitas data menggunakan triangulasi sumber data dan triangulasi metode. Analisis data menggunakan teknik analisis mengalir. Hasil penelitian ditemukan fungsi persahabatan meliputi pertemanan, stimulasi kompetensi, dukungan fisik, dukungan ego, perbandingan sosial, dan intimasi. Temuan dengan data paling banyak menunjukkan kesetiaan, ketulusan, kehangatan, dan keakraban. Kedua, hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kumpulan cerpen yang dianalisis sangat relevan untuk dikembangkan menjadi modul pembelajaran cerita pendek di SMK Warga Surakarta. This study aims to (1) describe the function of friendship contained in a collection of short stories by Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, Mira Widjaya, and (2) describe the use of values ​​and functions of friendship in the development of a short story teaching module based on the independent curriculum in SMK phase F on a collection of short stories by Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, and Mira Widjaya. The study uses a qualitative descriptive method. Data sources in the study were through documents of short story collections by Tere Liye, Dewi Lestari, and Mira Widjaya, as well as informants including Indonesian language teachers, grade XI students of SMK Warga Surakarta, and Psychology graduates. The sampling technique used purposive sampling. Data collection techniques were carried out through interviews and document analysis. Data validity testing techniques used triangulation of data sources and triangulation of methods. Data analysis used flow analysis techniques. The results of the study found that the functions of friendship include friendship, competence stimulation, physical support, ego support, social comparison, and intimacy. The findings with the most data showed loyalty, sincerity, warmth, and familiarity. Second, the research results show that the collection of short stories analyzed is very relevant to be developed into a short story learning module at SMK Warga Surakarta.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk-bentuk tuturan yang melanggar prinsip kesantunan berbahasa dalam film Imperfect: Karier, Cinta, dan Timbangan karya Meira Anastasia. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif dengan pendekatan deskriptif, yaitu dengan menggambarkan bentuk- bentuk pelanggaran maksim kesantunan dalam dialog antar tokoh di film tersebut. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan pencatatan. Sementara itu, analisis data dilakukan melalui tiga tahap, yaitu reduksi data, pengodean, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis menggunakan teori prinsip kesantunan berbahasa dari Leech dan hasilnya dapat digunakan sebagai bahan ajar untuk materi teks negosiasi di jenjang Sekolah Menengah Atas. Dari hasil analisis, ditemukan sebanyak 32 tuturan yang menyimpang dari prinsip kesantunan berbahasa, dengan rincian: 7 tuturan melanggar maksim kebijaksanaan, 6 tuturan melanggar maksim pujian, 4 tuturan melanggar maksim kedermawanan, 5 tuturan melanggar maksim kerendahan hati, 6 tuturan melanggar maksim kesepakatan, dan 4 tuturan melanggar maksim simpati. This study aims to identify forms of speech that violate the principles of politeness in the film Imperfect: Karier, Cinta, dan Timbangan by Meira Anastasia. The method used is qualitative with a descriptive approach, namely by describing the forms of violations of politeness maxims in the dialogue between characters in the film. Data collection was carried out through the technique of free listening and recording. Meanwhile, data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely data reduction, coding, and drawing conclusions. The collected data were analyzed using Leech's theory of politeness principles and the results can be used as teaching materials for negotiation text materials at the Senior High School level. From the results of the analysis, 32 utterances were found that deviated from the principles of politeness, with details: 7 utterances violated the maxim of wisdom, 6 utterances violated the maxim of praise, 4 utterances violated the maxim of generosity, 5 utterances violated the maxim of humility, 6 utterances violated the maxim of agreement, and 4 utterances violated the maxim of sympathy.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap makna tanda-tanda semiotik dalam novel Laut Bercerita karya Leila S. Chudori dengan menggunakan teori semiotika Charles Sanders Peirce. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif, dengan data utama berupa kutipan dalam novel yang dianalisis sebagai tanda dalam bentuk ikon, indeks, dan simbol. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa novel ini mengandung berbagai bentuk ikon seperti suara ombak, aroma masakan, dan gambar visual yang menyerupai objek aslinya. Sementara itu, indeks ditemukan melalui tanda-tanda yang menunjukkan keberadaan atau akibat, seperti bau rokok dan suara ketukan pintu. Simbol muncul dalam bentuk benda atau peristiwa yang memiliki makna konvensional atau kultural, seperti penjara dan lagu perjuangan. Semua tanda tersebut mencerminkan makna sosial, politik, dan kemanusiaan yang ingin disampaikan pengarang. Dengan pendekatan semiotika Peirce, pembaca dapat lebih memahami pesan tersembunyi dalam novel ini secara mendalam. This study aims to reveal the meaning of semiotic signs in the novel Laut Bercerita by Leila S. Chudori using Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative method, with the main data in the form of quotations in the novel analyzed as signs in the form of icons, indexes, and symbols. The results of the analysis show that the novel contains various forms of icons such as the sound of waves, the aroma of cooking, and visual images that resemble the original object. Meanwhile, indexes are found through signs that indicate presence or effect, such as the smell of cigarettes and the sound of knocking on the door. Symbols appear in the form of objects or events that have conventional or cultural meanings, such as prisons and fight songs. All these signs reflect the social, political and humanitarian meanings that the author wants to convey. With Peirce's semiotic approach, readers can better understand the hidden messages in this novel in depth.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan penggunaan bahasa slang dalam pembelajaran puisi melalui pendekatan semantik serta pemanfaatannya sebagai modul ajar. Data penelitian berupa dokumen teks, yaitu karya puisi siswa kelas VIII E MTs Negeri 6 Cirebon. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan metode simak. Analisis data dilakukan melalui metode agih dan padan pragmatik untuk mengungkap jenis makna, meliputi makna leksikal, denotatif, konotatif, dan kontekstual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa bahasa slang yang digunakan siswa meliputi bentuk akronim, singkatan, penggalan, metatesis, kata dasar, pengaruh bahasa asing, serta pembentukan makna baru. Secara semantik, ditemukan pemetaan makna yang beragam, baik yang bersifat leksikal, konotatif, maupun pergeseran makna dalam konteks puisi. Temuan ini menunjukkan bahwa bahasa slang tidak hanya berfungsi sebagai ekspresi remaja, tetapi juga memiliki nilai estetik dalam karya puisi siswa. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, dikembangkan modul ajar puisi berbasis bahasa slang untuk membantu siswa memahami bentuk dan makna bahasa secara kontekstual dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia. This study aims to describe the use of slang in poetry learning through a semantic approach and its use as a teaching module. The research data are in the form of text documents, namely the poetry works of class VIII E students of MTs Negeri 6 Cirebon. This study uses a qualitative approach with the reading method. Data analysis was carried out using the distribution and pragmatic matching method to reveal the types of meaning, including lexical, denotative, connotative, and contextual meanings. The results of the study show that the slang used by students includes acronyms, abbreviations, fragments, metathesis, basic words, foreign language influences, and the formation of new meanings. Semantically, a diverse mapping of meanings was found, both lexical, connotative, and shifting meanings in the context of poetry. These findings indicate that slang does not only function as an expression of youth, but also has aesthetic value in students' poetry works. Based on the research results, a slang-based poetry teaching module was developed to help students understand the form and meaning of language contextually in Indonesian language learning.

Abstract

Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan perspektif pragmatik untuk menganalisis tindak tutur dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Indonesia di kelas VIII SMPN 2 Ciwaringin. Pragmatik dipahami sebagai kajian makna yang berkaitan dengan konteks penggunaan bahasa dalam interaksi antara penutur dan pendengar. Pengumpulan data dilakukan melalui teknik simak bebas libat cakap dan simak libat cakap, dengan data berupa tuturan guru dan siswa selama proses pembelajaran. Analisis data mengacu pada teori tindak tutur yang membedakan tiga jenis tuturan, yaitu lokusi, ilokusi, dan perlokusi, serta klasifikasi tindak tutur yang mencakup asertif, direktif, komisif, ekspresif, dan deklaratif. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa 43 data tindak tutur yang dianalisis menampilkan variasi bentuk dan fungsi tuturan dalam interaksi pembelajaran, terutama pada materi teks pidato persuasif. This study uses a qualitative approach with a pragmatic perspective to analyze speech actions in Indonesian language learning in grade VIII of SMPN 2 Ciwaringin. Pragmatics is understood as the study of meaning related to the context of the use of language in the interaction between speakers and listeners. Data collection is carried out through the technique of free listening and listening to the ability to engage with people, with data in the form of teacher and student speech during the learning process. Data analysis refers to speech theory that distinguishes three types of speech, namely locution, illocution, and perlocution, as well as the classification of speech actions which include assertive, directive, commissive, expressive, and declarative. The results of the study showed that the 43 speech action data analyzed displayed variations in the form and function of speech in learning interactions, especially in persuasive speech text material.
