Abstract

This writing explores the historical experiences of the author's family, particularly regarding the anti-Chinese racial conflicts endured by Kweek Hwie Bian, the maternal grandfather, who faced persecution during three different periods in Indonesia. The author reveals how violence and racial discrimination have shaped and erased part of the family's ethnic identity. From the exodus in Semarang in 1965 due to the PKI riots, to the conflicts in 1980-1981 and the May 1998 riots, this narrative highlights the inherited trauma and the family's efforts to maintain their existence. The name change from Kweek Hwie Bian to Soebianto reflects an extreme measure to avoid persecution. These stories demonstrate how the dark history of racial persecution affects subsequent generations, erasing cultural identity and instilling a deep-seated fear of expressing their ethnic identity in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

The Merdeka Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka), which currently underpins Indonesia’s educational system, emphasizes independent learning grounded in national character values, as articulated in the concepts of Merdeka Belajar and the Pancasila Student Profile (Profil Pelajar Pancasila). Informed by the educational philosophy of Ki Hajar Dewantara, the curriculum incorporates the principles of freedom, nationalism, natural law, culture, and humanity. In classroom settings, especially in history education, the Merdeka Curriculum aims to address students' diverse learning characteristics, including learning styles, behavioral tendencies, and cognitive capacities. This pedagogical approach is known as differentiated learning instruction (Pembelajaran Berdiferensiasi). This study employs a descriptive qualitative method to explain the implementation of differentiated learning in Indonesian History classes at SMAS Al-Izzah Batu, in accordance with the principles of the Merdeka Curriculum and the Pancasila Student Profile. The research sample contains 18 students. The findings are presented through descriptive analysis, supporting documents, and photographs depicting differentiated learning activities conducted in grade XI during lessons on the topic “The Impact of Colonialism on Everyday Life.”

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pepper plantation system in Bengkulu during the East India Company (EIC) period from 1685 to 1825, with a particular focus on colonial exploitation mechanisms, labor dynamics, and Bengkulu's integration into global pepper trade networks. The central questions examined include how the EIC constructed its pepper production system, mobilized and exploited labor, implemented colonial policies, and positioned Bengkulu within the global commodity trade. This research employs a historical research methodology encompassing the stages of heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography, drawing on primary sources from the National Archives of the Republic of Indonesia (ANRI) and Sumatra Factory Records, supplemented by relevant historiographical secondary literature. The study finds that the EIC constructed the pepper plantation system through three primary mechanisms: (1) monopoly agreements with local rulers that obligated each household to cultivate a minimum of 1,000 pepper vines; (2) the use of enslaved African laborers as the operational backbone of the plantation system, with their numbers reaching 1,121 in 1778; and (3) the deployment of British Residents in pepper-producing districts as instruments of colonial control. Bengkulu was integrated into global trade networks through two principal export routes   Fort Marlborough–India–London with annual export volumes reaching 453,600–907,200 kg to European markets during the eighteenth century. This study concludes that the EIC's plantation system in Bengkulu constituted a systematic and exploitative form of colonial capitalism, integrating the region into the world economy not for the benefit of its inhabitants, but for the commercial gain of European merchants as evidenced by the recurring resistance of the Bengkulu population throughout the 140 years of EIC occupation.

Abstract

The narrative of the 1945 independence struggle in history textbooks plays a crucial role in shaping students’ understanding of national identity. However, its presentation does not always reflect the diversity of historical perspectives or meet the demands of critical learning. This study aims to analyze the construction of the 1945 independence narrative in high school history textbooks under the Merdeka Curriculum. The study employs a qualitative approach using a three-dimensional critical discourse analysis framework encompassing textual analysis, social context, and the underlying perspectives of the narrative. Data were drawn from two history textbooks for Grades 11 and 12 published by the Ministry of Education. The units of analysis included narrative texts, illustrations, learning activities, and assessment questions related to the theme of independence. The results indicate that the narrative is predominantly shaped by a nationalist perspective that emphasizes the role of elite figures, while the contributions of other groups are only partially represented. Furthermore, most assessment questions remain focused on factual recall and do not sufficiently promote critical thinking skills. These findings reveal a gap between the intended curriculum and the actual presentation of material in textbooks. Therefore, the development of more inclusive, analytical, and contextualized historical narratives is necessary to support critical history learning.
