Abstract

The Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) industry in Kampung Batik Gedong, Semarang, has made a significant contribution to the local economy through the production of Semarang's signature batik. However, this production activity produces liquid waste containing synthetic dyes and heavy metals, which have a negative impact on the environment. The lack of effective waste processing technology and the low knowledge and skills of MSMEs in waste management are major challenges that require immediate solutions. This community service program aims to increase the capacity of MSMEs in managing liquid waste sustainably through the application of electrolysis technology and integrated training. The activities are carried out in five stages: preparation, socialization, application, monitoring, and evaluation. The data collection method involves measuring the level of knowledge using pretests and posttests, as well as assessing skills through direct assessments by the service team. The target of the program's success is to increase the understanding of MSMEs implementer by 80% and skills by 75% after training. Electrolysis technology is applied to reduce the concentration of dyes and heavy metals in liquid waste, while training is provided to improve the understanding and technical skills of MSMEs implementer. The results of this program are expected to include reducing the level of liquid waste pollution, increasing the technical capacity of MSMEs implementer, and increasing awareness of the importance of environmental sustainability. Thus, this program supports environmental conservation, the sustainability of the batik industry, and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDGs 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), SDGs 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDGs 13 (Action on Climate Change), and SDGs 14 (Life Below Water).

Abstract

This community service activity was carried out by a team of lecturers and students of Yogyakarta State University (UNY) in Tlahap Village, Kledung District, Temanggung Regency, specifically in the Posong Nature Tourism area. The background of this activity was the limited access to electricity faced by the community managing food courts in the tourist area due to the lack of optimal PLN network coverage. This has an impact on low service quality, limited stall operating hours, and lack of comfort for tourists. Therefore, the community service team presented a renewable energy-based solution in the form of a hybrid system of Solar Power Plants (PLTS) and wind turbines with a capacity of 1,500 watts and 5,000 Wh of energy storage. The method of implementing the activity was carried out through an energy needs survey, socialization, device installation, technical training, and monitoring and evaluation. The community service activity was carried out on August 8, 2025, at 10:00 WIB until finished, attended by the Head of Tlahap Village, the Chairperson and management of Posong Nature Tourism, and 23 local residents, with cloudy and foggy weather conditions but proceeded smoothly. Participants were given an understanding of renewable energy systems, maintenance techniques, handling electrical short circuits, and power usage management to prevent batteries from draining quickly. The results of discussions with the community showed that the application of renewable energy not only provides a solution to electricity needs, but also increases the community's capacity to manage electrical engineering systems independently. Furthermore, the availability of electricity supports the development of food court businesses, tourist comfort, and strengthens Posong's image as an eco-tourism destination. This activity contributes to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, and SDG 13: Addressing Climate Change).

Abstract

Coastal communities in Eastern Indonesia, particularly in the 3T (frontier, outermost, disadvantaged) regions, face complex challenges in managing abundant marine resources despite their cultural richness and ecological potential. This study was conducted in Waiheru Village, Ambon, which represents a coastal community where traditional maritime folklore remains a living heritage yet has not been optimally integrated into food security strategies. The research aimed to explore the level of maritime literacy and the utilization of seaweed for household food resilience by mapping the potentials and problems faced by women and youth as primary community actors. A qualitative field survey was carried out involving 60 respondents consisting of housewives and village youth, using open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, and direct observation. Thematic analysis revealed that folklore, such as the Nenek Luhu legend, can serve as an effective medium for strengthening ecological awareness and maritime identity. Findings indicated that housewives are central in basic seaweed processing for household consumption, but their skills remain limited to low-value products, while youth show strong interest in digital-based promotion despite constraints in technical capacity and internet access. This research contributes to science by offering an integrative model that links culture, ecology, and community-based economy as a foundation for sustainable coastal development.
