Abstract

The Community Service Program for Village Empowerment (KKN-PMD) at the University of Mataram (UNRAM) was conducted on January 16, 2024, in Sukadana Village, Pujut District, Central Lombok Regency, to empower farmers in utilizing livestock waste as liquid organic fertilizer (POC) from cow urine. This initiative aims to enhance soil fertility, reduce dependence on chemical fertilizers, and promote sustainable agriculture. Additionally, the use of livestock waste for POC production is expected to minimize environmental pollution caused by unmanaged cow urine disposal. Using the Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, the program engaged farmers in training and hands-on practice to produce POC using cow urine, EM4, and molasses. The results showed that POC improved soil fertility, restored soil structure, and increased agricultural yields by 15–20% while reducing production costs. Beyond economic benefits, this program encourages farmers to adopt environmentally friendly agricultural practices and introduces a more sustainable fertilizer alternative. The improved knowledge and skills in waste management are expected to have a lasting positive impact on sustainable farming in Sukadana Village and serve as a model for other regions with similar agricultural conditions.

Abstract

A healthy and sustainable environment is critical for sustaining ecological balance and increasing human well-being. However, other human activities, such as industrialization, urbanization, and the use of chemicals in agriculture, can have a negative impact on the environment. As a result, the community requires an effective and simple way for integrating their surroundings. Bioindicator-based analysis is one approach of assessing environmental quality. Bioindicators are creatures whose presence, quantity, or physical condition can reflect the state of their surroundings. Plankton, macrozobenthos, moss, lichen, soil insects, and other microorganisms are examples of bioindicators. This community service project seeks to raise public awareness of the significance of bioindicators in environmental quality assessment, as well as how to identify the many types of bioindicators found in the surrounding environment and how to utilize them to assess air, soil, and air quality. The community service activity is divided into three stages: preparation (site survey and activity needs, permissions), implementation (socialization and poster exhibition), and assessment (participants completing questionnaires). The community service activity ran successfully. Throughout the socialization activities, all participants were engaged and eager. The material supplied was fresh to the participants and would be fascinating to examine further. Furthermore, participants were interested in attempting to determine environmental quality by observing the presence of bioindicators around them. Socialization activities were also able to instill in participants a sense of awareness and concern for environmental changes, prompting them to take an active role in sustaining the ecosystem in their surrounds.

Abstract

Aik Bukak Village, North Batukliang District, Central Lombok is an agricultural area with the majority of its people making a living as farmers, apart from managing their yards by growing vegetables and fruit. Several types of fruit are found in quite large quantities and are available almost all year round, whether they come from the garden or not, for example bananas, watermelon and durian. At certain times fruit is available in large quantities, and accompanied by large amounts of waste which is often not utilized, other than as raw material for making organic fertilizer. Basically, this type of waste can be processed into food or snacks, which apart from being useful as an alternative food ingredient, as an effort to diversify food, is also an alternative to increase household income. The aim of this activity is to provide outreach and training in making food products based on local fruit waste in the Aik Bukak Village community. The method used is to conduct lectures, discussions and demonstrations of fruit waste processing by involving the community. From the results of the activity, it can be concluded that the community has additional knowledge regarding the use of fruit waste as food, in the form of banana peel chips, candied watermelon peels, and jackfruit seed cakes. Apart from reducing the potential for environmental pollution, people also have alternative businesses to increase household income.
