Abstract

Language is one of the important things in human life. By using the language, we can communicate with others. This research tried to analyze the bible translation by using methods of translation theory by Newmark (1988). This research was a qualitative research that focused to analyze the Gospel according to Mark. Bible entitled New Testament (2005) was published by The Indonesian Bible Society for The Gideons International. It was printed by Percetakan Lembaga Alkitab Indonesia. The book consists of 727 pages. Informal method was used to present the results of the analysis. It was the explanation of the translation methods used. Formal method was used to describe the table of the frequency of the translation methods applied in the bible translation found in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel. The translation methods found in data source were word for word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Adaptation was not found in all chapters of data source. The most translation method applied in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel was free translation. Free translation had the highest percentage in every chapter in new testament bible of Mark’s gospel. In the other word, the translator tried to transfer the meaning from source text into target text with changing the form based on cultures in target language.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to explicate and account for the verb of eating in Manggaraian language. There are some verbs denoting the meaning of eating, such as hang, lompong, jumik, mboros, takung, la’ur, alas, pongo mu’u. The qualitative research method was applied to unveil and explain the explication of meaning in the given verbs respectively. Field-observation and recording were the techniques used to gather the data from the natural speakers utterances as well as part of the data were based on the researchers’ intuitive knowledge as the native speakers. The data were analyzed through the theory of Natural Semantic Metalanguage (NSM). The results of the analysis reveal that Manggaraian language has the inventory of verbs designating the meaning of eating such as hang, jumik, lompong, mboros, takung, raci, alas, pongo mu’u. In terms of semantic prime, the verbs are under the category of the action verb. Comparing to the other verbs, the verbs jumik, lompong, pongo mu’u have more delicate meaning of eating. Furthermore, those verbs are classified into generic and specific category of meaning. The verbs “hang, jumik, mboros” are generic in meaning while the verbs lompong alas,racik, pongo mu’u, takung are specific in meaning. The verbs are categorized into non-compositional polysemy. Regarding the explication of meaning, the verbs reveal the action and the process of eating involving certain parts of body (hands and mouth) as well as specific tools (plate, spoon, bowl).

Abstract

The aims of this research is to find out grammar mistakes and obstacles in learning English through writing. Through writing, students can improve their understanding by paying close attention to the grammar and content. The implementation of CRS is meant to enhance the understanding of students of STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. And the implementation of Surface Strategy Taxonomy (SST) is done through documentation of students’ work through translation. The data source is taken from a report text in Indonesian as source language and translated it into English as target language. In order to know the benefit of SST, students are given the questionnaire to gain the data. Data collection is the results of students’ translations sheets. The results of 68 students’ translation work show that there are 98 error found in 4 kinds (errors omission, addition, mis-ordering and mis-formation) and each kind of error has its own sub-kind errors (SKE). The biggest error is omission with 39 errors (39,8%) and lowest error is mis-ordering with 12 errors (12,2%). Omission has 2 SKE, those are grammatical morpheme with 23 errors (23,5%) and content morpheme with 16 error (16,3%). Addition has 29 errors (29,6%) with SKE 16 simple errors addition (16,3%), and 13 double error addition (13,3%). Mis-ordering has 12 errors (12,2%) with SKE 4 misplacement of verbs (4,0%) and 8 misplacements of words/items (8,1%). Mis-formation has 18 errors with SKE 5 error of alternating form/ prepositions (5,1%), 6 errors of content oriented lexical/quantifiers (6,1%) and tenses with 7 errors (7,1%). There were 9 errors found in the agreement between demonstrative pronoun and noun (9,1%) and the lowest number of errors are apostrophe s and misplacement of verb with 4 errors each (4,0%). The questionnaire shows that the implementation of SST does help the students where 30 students (46,2%) said that they know their mistake, 24 students (36,9%) stated that they know about the words’ choice/diction and 11 students (16,9%) said that SST helps them to improve their English grammar. Besides, students are encouraged to practice more English in their daily.

Abstract

English at higher education level requires the development of language competence, especially in the development of speaking competence which will be important when it must be applied to communication needs in the industry. To achieve the goal of joining these needs, the use of technology in learning and its evaluation can be one of the determinants of increasing competence. The form of implementation is the assignment of English video presentation which is considered effective in developing competence in the digital and global era as it is today. The stage of creating videos in learning activities can increase student engagement in the lecturing process, increase the effectiveness of the English learning process, stimulate students' creativity and independence, and most importantly foster students' courage to appear and communicate in English. Assessment of the linguistic aspect will help students identify grammatical errors that need to be corrected and improve their verbal skills in English itself. The object of this research is the seventh semester students majoring in Informatics Engineering, STMIK STIKOM Indonesia. The technique of collecting data applied in this research is observation. The data is qualitative data and in the form of English video presentations uploaded by students in the Google Classroom application in the online English class which will be analyzed by using descriptive qualitative methods. The analysis of the linguistic aspect includes pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, fluency, content, and comprehension. The data obtained will be classified so that students' English competence, especially speaking, can be identified and can be used as the basis for implementing appropriate teaching methods.

Abstract

This article describes a number of new language terms in their development in the world of creative tourism, especially for tourists. This term arose as a result of the growing and varied types of new tourism that emerged because of the need to relieve boredom from the fatigue of daily routines. In addition, the use of this term is also inseparable from the development and proliferation of the use of social media among the global community. Even these terms are increasingly embedded in the minds of tourists and the surrounding community so that all elements of creative tourism are now commonplace in using this language variation which is very influenced with the changing needs of tourists. Generally, this language term is a combination of two words that refer to new meanings in the needs of contemporary creative tourism. Keywords: language terms, creative tourism, social media

Abstract

Pesantren is an environment that is very well known as religiousness in which there are several rules that must be obeyed by teachers and students. The purpose of this discipline is to build humanist relationships. This study aims to uncover and describe the meanings and types of conversational implicatures contained in the conversations of teachers and students at the Salafiyah Syafi'iyah Al-Azhar Islamic boarding school. This study uses data analysis. Qualitative methods are methods that aim to obtain descriptive data. The data in this study are conversational implicatures that transcribed into written text. Data were collected using selection, description and verification techniques. Data were analyzed using qualitative descriptivewhich is based on Siswantoro's theory. The results of this study indicate that there are four types of conversation implicatures, namely general conversation implicatures, scaled implicatures, special conversation implicatures and conventional implicatures.

Abstract

This research is an empirical legal research because of the gap between the provisions and theories that exist with the legal facts that occur in society, about transactions of goods that cross the boundaries of a country has been regulated nationally by each country through certain procedures through the laws of the country -that. Against illegal business in the border area of the Republic of Indonesia with the Democratic Republic of East Timor, law enforcement must be carried out by law enforcement as an effort to harmonize concrete actualization with the applicable legal rules, with the national legal aspects of each country and agreed aspects of international law. The barriers and solutions to law enforcement against illegal business can be resolved through social and cultural, economic, political and security, while the solution that is used as an alternative is development in the border region specifically directed to accelerate the handling of the 3 fundamental problems faced by the border area, namely the delimitation aspect and Delineation of Boundaries, the aspect of affirming the national boundaries of the watershed area of the Republic of Indonesia with the State of Timor Leste, the aspect of the development gap is the fulfillment of economic infrastructure needs to foster opportunities for border areas to participate and compete in global markets and regional markets.

Abstract

As a social being, people will socialize through communication using language as a medium. The decision to choose a language or use one of the language codes depends on the perceived cost or benefit he will get. This paper is intended to describe communication patterns and preferences for language use especially within a culture where another language is dominant. It is a sociolinguistic study using descriptive qualitative methods on the Muslim diaspora community in the village of Angantiga, Badung Regency who had lived in Bali province in Indonesia for more than a generation. The data were collected through questionnaires, in-depth interviews, and direct observation. The results show that there is a relationship between language use in various domains and self-identity. As a diaspora community they are very accommodating and show language tolerance to maintain communication and interpersonal relationships. The language convergence is carried out in order to seek approval or social recognition from the surrounding community. It can foster tolerance to build social harmony in the midst of diversity.

Abstract

Subtitling refers to the process of inserting into audio-visual media in order present the utterance which being spoken. Subtitles contain the speaker's language or English in order to be understood by the audience. It usually presented in television shows, movies or YouTube videos. This study was focused to analyze the subtitling strategies used in Zootopia Movie. The aims of the study were focused to find the types of subtitling strategies and the most frequent and least frequent subtitling strategies that can be found in the subtitles of Zootopia movie. The data source was taken from the English and Indonesian subtitles of Zootopia Movie. The data was collected through the observation method by watching and collecting the subtitles from the Zootopia Movie. A qualitative method was used in this study. The result showed that there were 10 out of 10 subtitling strategies that can be found which consist of 213 total of data such as 19 expansion (8.92%), 21 paraphrase (9.85%), 65 transfer (30.51%), 22 imitation (10.32%), 6 transcription (2.81%), 19 dislocation (8.92%), 16 condensation (7.51%), 15 decimation (7.04%), 27 deletion (12.67%) and 3 resignation (1.40%). It can be concluded that transfer was the most frequent subtitling strategy that can be found which has 65 (30.51%) data in total. On contrary, the resignation was the least frequent strategy that can be found which has 3 (1.40%) data in total.

Abstract

This present study aims to explore the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers’ perceptions of implementing the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) and their strategies in their English online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak. A qualitative descriptive design was applied for the present study. Five EFL teachers (1 male and 4 females) from SMKN 1 Seyegan, Yogyakarta were involved in the data gathering process. The data were obtained from a semi-structured interview conducted face to face, and the data were analyzed descriptively. The findings of the present study revealed that teachers' perceptions of implementing HOTS in English online learning and teaching during the COVID-19 outbreak were varied among them. Furthermore, three respondents: Mr. S, Mrs. ECU, and Mrs. IL found it hard to fully implement HOTS in their online learning and teaching due to several factors such as students' low level of English knowledge, the nature of the topic delivered, and digital literacy. The findings also revealed that there are four strategies applied by the EFL teachers in conducting HOTS during their English online learning, they are through the activities of 1) reading a text; 2) watching videos; 3) creating the learning products, and 4) stimulating questions.
