Abstract

This study explored the commodification of polygamy in the Air Mata Surga (AMS) movie, adapted from the Air Mata Tuhan novel. The movie was selected for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is an effective transformation medium to reach people with distinctive backgrounds, including their age, social status, domicile, education, culture, language, and even religion. Secondly, polygamy is considered sacred as it is correlated with religion. However, in the industrial sector, polygamy becomes a profane commodity once it is taken as a theme in a movie. Therefore, this study investigated the commodification types of polygamy in the AMS movie and society’s reception of those commodification. The researcher used the observation technique on material objects in a novel and film and also created a questionnaire using Google Form. The research participants came from Malang, Surakarta, and Jakarta, Indonesia. The results show that the commodification observed in the AMS movies consists of both content and audience commodification. Meanwhile, polygamy was used by the production house as a means to gain revenue and to transform ideology, both in the novel and in the movie. The findings also suggest that 78 percent of participants mentioned that their viewpoint toward polygamy shifted after watching the movie.

Abstract

The paper investigates the language use of the Balinese diaspora in Kampung Bali, Penganjuran, a multilingual village in Banyuwangi, which includes the multilingual situation, the nature of the language accommodation and the language domains. The current study answers the following research questions: (1) how is the situation of multilingualism in the village? (2) how is the situation of language accommodation in the Balinese village in the village? and (3) what are the domains of the use of the languages spoken in the village? The research applied a qualitative research approach using semi-structured interviews. Thirteen questions were asked during the interviews with three research participants. The answers were coded into data related to multilingualism situation, language accommodation, and domains of language use of the languages spoken in Kampung Bali, Penganjuran. The analysis aims to search for patterns and links in the coded texts. The findings show that the Balinese diaspora is the most multilingual ethnic group in Kampung Bali, Penganjuran, as they speak five languages: Indonesian, Balinese, Osing, Javanese, and Madurese. The Balinese also displays an accommodative nature toward the national language and the dominant vernacular languages. The findings also show that the domains of use of Balinese in the diaspora have declined since it is only used at the house of worship by three research participants and at home by one participant. The accommodative nature of the Balinese diaspora might have contributed to the shift from Balinese to the national language or to the dominant vernacular languages.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the role of intermediate language in translating the dialogue subtitle of Le Grand Voyage film from French as source language into Indonesian as target language. This study used intermediate language translation theory from Amal Al Shunnaq (2019), which was a translating process from source language into target language through other foreign language. Le Grand Voyage film is a film with religious nuance with the life of maghrébin immigrants in France as the background. The film subtitle in Indonesian were translated from English subtitle which were previously translated from French dialogue. English as the intermediate language had a very important role since it determined the subtitle translation final result in the target language. In addition to economic reasons, the role of an intermediate language was to be able to simplify or make subtitle in target language more concise, therefore it could easily adjust the space and time on the screen display, refine the translation result so that the film subtitle in target language becomes more polite, such as the loss of swear words, and determines the message from source language into target language due to cultural influences and the peculiarities of the intermediate language.

Abstract

Understanding the dialogic relation between tradition and modernity in our current cultural dynamic remains an ‘incomplete project’ that requires careful examination. Approaching and thoroughly interpreting both roles in our society, mainly in how they influenced our current paradigm of culture, continue to pose risks and challenges. This article will explore the works of Gregorius Sidharta Soegijo, a renowned maestro of Bandung modern art, whose conversational practice proposes a particular means of harmonizing these antagonistic tensions and various derivatives issues that might later follow. By using art criticism as its primary modalities while simultaneously cross-referencing both modern and contemporary aesthetic paradigms, this article will demonstrate how Sidharta’s inclusive and deliberate approach might provide a dialogic site for various antagonist polarities—mainly tradition and modernity—to coexist within a democratic, horizontal, and productive axis. His audacity in contemplating inward and resorting to his idiosyncrasy would also be highlighted for its contributive nature as the pretext of his attempt to reconcile, resolve, and synthesize the long-desirable harmony between tradition and modernity. These gestures have undergone a consistent, gradual process of internal reflection that touched upon his personal experiences, particularly his encounter with multitudes of cultural values, perspectives, and paradigms that each proposes their significance.

Abstract

Believing that the film industry is getting worse by utilizing simple plots and only emphasizing on the editing and the cosmetics, European filmmakers and theorists make their own style of realistic film movements as a reaction to Hollywood’s mainstream filmmaking style. One of which is the famed Dogme 95 Manifesto film movement in Denmark propagated by Lars von Trier. Dogme 95 Manifesto is a set of rules that needs to be followed by filmmakers in order to make a Dogme film. It is believed that by following this rule will restrain the filmmakers’ creativity, focusing more on the realism inside the film, and “purifying” the film industry. In this paper, we analyze realism in Dogme 95 through one of its successful milestones: The Celebration by Thomas Vinterburg through its cinematography and Dogme 95 rules within the film. We argue that as opposed to bringing realistic images on the screen, The Celebration brings atmospheric realism by providing a consistent feel of ‘relatability’ and presence inside the story to the spectators.

Abstract

This study investigates the speaking anxiety levels of EFL students enrolled in English medium classes (EMI) in a private university. Factors causing students’ speaking anxiety and potential strategies to reduce the speaking anxiety were also examined. Eighty-nine EMI students from ten undergraduate study programs were the respondents of this study. Data were collected by using Horwitz et al.’s (1986) anxiety survey. Findings showed that EMI students exhibited low-level English-speaking anxiety. The cross-tabulation data demonstrated that students perceived comprehension apprehension as the paramount anxiety factor. To reduce their comprehension apprehension, students prefer their lecturers not to over-react their speaking mistakes and degrade them when they make speaking mistakes. These imply that these findings can be used as consideration for preparatory programs for students and lecturers in EMI classes.

Abstract

The aims of this paper are to discuss the concepts underlying Project-based learning (PjBL) and its syntax and to explore the planning, implementation, and reflection of PjBL in the online teaching of writing a process paragraph on the topic of using Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3R) principles to save the environment. Thirty-one students joined the paragraph writing course. The learning process and the students’ products of their projects were collected and documented in the form of videos, Power Point presentation, and electronic writing portfolios. The paper discusses how PjBl promotes collaborative work, problem-solving, critical thinking and technology integration. It also illustrates the steps of the implementation of PjBL which include planning, implementing, and reflecting. The project products were the students’ compositions and the videos showing the process in how to do or to make something that reflect the 3R principles. The majority of the students’ compositions were in ‘very good’ criteria, and the students’ videos were published in YouTube. The implementation of PjBL in the online teaching of process writing on the environmental topic increases the students’ critical thinking and creativity in solving global problems.

Abstract

West Kalimantan is one of the provinces in Indonesia which has three border areas with Malaysia. Community interactions between countries that have been going on for centuries undeniably lead to language contact which results in people choosing local language so that communication can run effectively. The purpose of this study was to determine the variety of language used around the area, language attitudes, and the preservation of Indonesian in the border area of Aruk, Indonesia and Sarawak, Malaysia. Quantitative and qualitative methods were used in which the data were obtained through observation, questionnaires, and interviews with a total of 150 respondents. The results show that the variety of languages used by students, traders and government circles as the target speakers is Indonesian. Furthermore, the language serves as an instructional language in education settings, the language of communication, a unifying tool as well as the language of government administration, while the other local and regional languages are used in certain limited contexts. Regarding the attitudes, the people on the border of Aruk, Indonesia and Malaysia show a very positive attitude towards Indonesian. Abstract

Globalization and the advancement of technology are giving a new challenge as well as opportunities for English educators around the globe. Indirectly, there are obstacles associated with learning English due to the fact that technology has become an integral aspect of human existence. The teaching of reading skill also faces the same challenge. Nowadays, reading is seen as more important than other skills, considering that reading has become one of the aspects of literacy. With regard to assessment, the availability of an educational application might be advantageous for teachers to assess students' reading skills. The current study investigates the types of application used by teachers in assessing students’ reading skill and the type of reading assessment that occur during the implementation of the application. Through open-ended interview and document analysis method, the research result indicates that the implementation of Google Form as an educational application to assess students reading skills demonstrated a reading assessment based on traditional assessment approaches with a focus on intensive reading. This study has shown the appropriate media for assessing students reading skill along with the reading focuses and assessment design that is suitable for it. In addition, in this study, Google Form dominates the most considerable use of media to assess students reading skills. Therefore, teachers could also save more time in assessing students’ reading by utilizing educational applications.

Abstract

This study aims to trace the early history of the Bimanese to identify the weaving and its 10 motifs defined in the Bima Land Customary Law as part of the Bima ethnic characteristics. The study used a qualitative approach with data triangulation (observations, interviews, and documentation). The research result showed that the activity of spinning yarn was known by the Bimanese before the expedition of Sang Bima to the land of the rising sun (Satonda Island, a volcanic area on Sumbawa Island), which became the ancestors of the Bimanese. They used weaving to make clothes, using similar procedures of Javanese weaving. Initially, the motifs of Bimanese woven were only in the form of stripes and rectangles, but the acculturation with Javanese culture during the heyday of Majapahit influenced the development of motifs in the Bima Kingdom during the 11-13th centuries. Subsequently, there was also acculturation with Bugis and Malay culture after the Bima Kingdom turned into a Sultanate. For instance, in choosing a leader, the Bima people should adopt the principle in the nggusu waru (octagonal) motif or that the Bima people must always bring benefits and noble characteristics like the scent of a flower in the Satako flower motif.
