Abstract

This study aims to identify the language proficiency level of primary English language teachers’ (PELTs) productive skills (speaking and writing) analyzed using the Common European Framework of References (CEFR) and Kurikulum Merdeka. As a foreign language in Indonesia, English language proficiency among PELTs is crucial to determine the success of the learning process in a classroom. Furthermore, PELTs should also possess adequate language proficiency to communicate effectively with students in any situation. However, several local context studies show the low language proficiency level possessed by PELTs. The low proficiency level was mostly gained through general English tests, for example TOEFL, which focuses on teachers’ receptive skills (listening and reading) and structure. A qualitative approach and case study research design were employed in this study. It was identified that the majority of teachers’ productive skills proficiency level is categorized into the B1/B2 level of CEFR. Additionally, the mixed level of proficiency among PELTs is still apparent which can create issues regarding primary-students’ language development and the standard of proficiency level that PELTs should be. Therefore, by involving subject teachers' communities and the government, a standard of language proficiency for PELTs should be developed.

Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the linguistic features that allegedly contained elements of blasphemy in Jenderal Dudung Abdurrachman's (JDA) speech. The analysis was carried out using a forensic linguistic perspective. This research data is in the form of JDA utterances delivered in a broadcast conducted with Deddy Corbuzier (DC). Based on a forensic linguistic analysis of the text of JDA's conversation with DC on Deddy Corbuzier's podcast, it can be concluded that JDA's linguistic evidence does not support blasphemy but a lack of knowledge in religion, especially in matters of faith. Due to the lack of knowledge of religion, JDA interprets religion and personifies God according to his understanding. In JDA's speech, there is also no intention to tarnish religion because the controversial JDA's speech cannot be interpreted partially but can be interpreted with other speeches. If it is related to other utterances, it can be concluded that there is no intention of JDA to tarnish religion. However, there are efforts by JDA to invite audiences to follow JDA's understanding and interpretation of religion.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the aesthetics of the concept of Tritangtu (the trinity) in the Tarawangsa music performance in Kampung Pasir Biru, Rancakalong, Sumedang. Tarawangsa is a ritual ceremony related to religious magic to honor Keursa Nyai (goddess of fertility). The music in this ritual is not just an accompaniment or ritual compliment but even deeper shows a strong connection with the concept of Tritangtu, namely the world of heaven, the human world, and the underworld. This study uses the ethnographic method, by performing an in-depth recording of the event. The recording is to find out in more detail why Tarawangsa music is played, in what context, and how do people believe in it. In addition, the concept of Tritangtu, belief in three main elements (metacosm, microcosm, and macrocosm) shows a thought of the Rancakalong people about the balance of human life with God and nature. The study results show that the cultural customs of the Pasirbiru community, in general, indicate how this balance is maintained. They believe there will be a significant impact if one of the Tritangtu elements is not fulfilled, and Tarawangsa's music is an essential element in this effort.

Abstract

In the digital age, technological advances impact EFL language instruction in Indonesia. After examining the current and future demands of education, prospective educators need to attain the minimum standards to fulfill students' needs in the twenty-first century. Multimodal texts in education are one way to solve today's pedagogical needs. The current study explores pre-service teachers' perceptions of their performance in utilizing multimodal texts in microteaching classes. Data were collected from the 6th-semester students from the English Language Education Study Program, the Faculty of Cultural Studies, Universitas Brawijaya, Indonesia. This research applied mixed methods, combining data collection from observation, questionnaires as primary sources, and a focus group discussion (FGD) to support the data. Then, the questionnaire data were analyzed quantitatively, and data from the FGD were coded and analyzed using thematic analysis. The finding shows that the pre-service teachers applied five types of multimodal texts in microteaching classes. In addition, although most of them perceive positively toward the use of multimodal texts in their teaching practice, there are still challenges in implementing digital-based multimodal texts, such as limited access to digital applications and confusion in integrating digital applications into learning activities.

Abstract

The purpose of this study seeks to analyze the conceptualization of political metaphors contained in political discourse in mass media in Medan-Indonesia. The problem analyzed is how to conceptualize political metaphors in national mass media (waspada.go.id, medan.tribunnews.com, sumut.antaranews.com, and hariansib.com). The main theory used to discuss this research problem uses the conceptual metaphorical theory/CMT of Lakoff, Johnson, and Kövecses. This research uses qualitative descriptive methods, with methods using basic referential techniques. The total data is 15, sorted according to CMT theory. The results of the study found that the conceptualization of political metaphors in the mass media in Indonesia is divided into 4 mapping domains, namely: war domain mapping, religious, mystical/occult, and animal. The conceptualization of political metaphors in the mass media explains the manifestation of political reality in society. Politics is conceptualized into warfare, the religious reality of society, the unseen and the reality of the bad picture of politicians.

Abstract

Based on the results of the documentary research, the average score of the fifth-graders at Madrasah Diniyah Al-Fadlilah on Arabic subject is still low (below the Minimum Criteria of Mastery Learning). The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of the implementation of MTBMQ (Tyler-Model-Based Quizziz Learning Media) or Tyler model along with Quizizz on students' reading skills in Arabic subject, as well as to find the issues and solutions in the implementation of MTBMQ. This research utilizes a one group pre-test post-test design. The data are collected through multiple choice tests, along with semi-open Likert Scale questionnaires. Due to the fact that the research data are normally distributed, the researchers decide to use parametric statistical tests. The results show that this implementation has a significant effect on the students' reading skills in Arabic subject. Furthermore, the test results of the paired sample t-test show a sig (2-tailed) value of 0.000 less than 0.025. It means that after implementing MTBMQ, students' score has increased. The result of the N-Gain test, namely 0.65, also shows that MTBMQ is efficient to be implemented to improve students’ reading skills, especially when the material is in the moderate category. The results of the Likert Scale questionnaire show that the main hindrances in implementing the MTBMQ are that students experience problems when logging into the Quizizz web and submitting answers, having difficulty finding the meaning of a word in the dictionary, and a lack of interest in learning to read.

Abstract

EasyJet, a UK low-cost airline service provider launched several attractive advertisements to attract consumers' interest, one of which is a series of posters issued in 2016. These posters are interesting because the words show complex morphological processes and implied meanings that can be extracted. Previous studies have mostly examined morphological formation or have conducted semiotic studies, but none have linked morphological processes and images on posters with a semiotic approach. Therefore, this study analyzes the word formation process in the 2016 EasyJet advertisement, which has undergone a derivation process, and finds out the meaning contained in the advertisement using a semiotic approach. This qualitative study examines the posters based on Lehmann and Berthet’s (2018) theory of word formation and Barthes' (2013) semiotics theory. The result of this study indicates that in this advertising poster, EasyJet attracts people to use its services in several market segments or consumer groups according to their respective characteristics. The stratagem revealed through these posters is that EasyJet is an airline that wants to invite its prospective passengers to explore new activities.

Abstract

Currently there are various learning materials that are able to motivate younger generations in learning local and indigenous languages. One example is the creation of songs in Retta language revitalization program in Alor Regency. In this regard, this study seeks to explain the process of revitalizing the Retta language and reviewing the effectiveness of revitalizing the Retta language through local language songs as learning materials. This is important because language and culture transmission through songs is a novelty in a language revitalization program. The research method uses a community—based language revitalization model and a descriptive qualitative approach with observational method from the analysis of Retta language songs in the language revitalization program. As a result, the Retta language revitalization in the South Ternate Village using local language songs is effective in increasing the interest of young speakers in the local language. This is based on the impact felt by the language revitalization participants as young speakers and Retta speakers in general. Besides that, the Retta language revitalization program was also able to raise public and local government awareness with evidence of the signing of a memorandum of understanding to preserve the Retta language in the future. Thus, the Retta language revitalization program using local language songs can continue to be developed by the local government.

Abstract

This study examines the process of improving the quality of pottery products from Pagelaran village in Malang mainly by improving the traditional combustion process. The traditional pottery craftsmen in this area have faced issues with both the aesthetic values and quality standard of their products, even having defective products due to poor processes. Despite these challenges, pottery craft in Pagelaran is considered a cultural heritage that has contributed to the welfare of craftsmen and the local community, as well as the preservation of local wisdom. To improve the quality of their products, the craftsmen in Pagelaran have focused on the way they use tools and materials, the technical production process by linking technology and the environment, the method used, and the effect on future environmental changes. This study employs a descriptive qualitative and action research, which involves the craftsmen community in Kampung Edukasi Wisata. Data is collected through observation and in-depth interviews and analyzed using the 6P simultaneous stages technique proposed by Winarno and Robfiah (2020). The findings of the study show that while the tools and materials used in the pottery production are still traditional, the pottery of Pagelaran is leading to innovative aesthetic products. Pottery production activities have an impact on the physical environment, requiring technology, methods, and cultural impact in the exploitation of the environment under the cultural ecology perspective. Despite the traditional production process, it has been integrated with user demands so that the quality of the product is improved through the standardization of the combustion process, product decoration, and additional touches of aesthetic values on the products. Overall, this study provides insights into how traditional craftsmen can improve their product quality through a focus on both the technical production process and cultural impact.

Abstract

Efficacy is teachers’ ability to strengthen their self-motivation to help solve learning problems faced by their students. In the learning process, psychopragmatic mastery is expected to strengthen the psychological condition of teachers and students through informative, manipulative, and persuasive sentences so that each student can optimize learning tools to help them achieve learning goals. During the pandemic, it is important to examine teachers’ self-efficacy and psychopragmatics mastery to support students in addressing their online learning difficulties. A qualitative study to investigate these issues was therefore conducted. Participants of this study were teachers from all over Indonesia, consisting of 350 middle and high school teachers. Data were collected through (1) a survey of teacher efficacy during online learning, (2) observations of the forms of efficacy built by the teachers during learning activities and outside the classroom, (3) interviews with the teachers to identify forms of efficacy used to shape students' learning fundamentals. It was found that the teachers tended to increase their efficacy through strong lesson planning. In addition, they often modified learning tools so that the multimedia used could foster enthusiasm and learning motivation for both themselves and the students. The teacher's efficacy in teaching is the key to analysis in psychopragmatic studies because data in the form of snippets of teacher speech can influence student motivation. Psychopragmatics in the teaching and learning process is not only considered the psychology of language that is practiced in learning the Indonesian language, but teachers also have internalized psychological reinforcement in the learning activity that has been planned, implemented, and assessed.
