Abstract

This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of flexing on social media as a representation of social status in digital society through the perspectives of Jean Baudrillard’s simulacra theory and Erving Goffman’s self-presentation theory. The research employs a qualitative method using content analysis of social media posts, particularly on Instagram and TikTok, that display flexing practices. The research data consist of photos and videos containing symbols of luxury, such as branded goods, luxury vehicles, exclusive locations, and consumptive lifestyles. The findings reveal that flexing is not merely an act of showing off, but also a conscious self-representation strategy used to construct a particular social image. The luxury symbols displayed often do not fully reflect reality, but rather represent identity constructions that have been selectively curated and manipulated according to the desired image. From the perspective of simulacra, these representations have replaced reality itself, causing the boundary between reality and representation to become increasingly blurred. Furthermore, the phenomenon of flexing is closely related to consumer culture, the need for social recognition, and personal branding strategies in the digital era. Exposure to flexing content also encourages social comparison, which may lead to psychological pressure among audiences. Therefore, flexing can be understood as a multidimensional phenomenon reflecting changes in how individuals construct identity, perceive reality, and gain social legitimacy within digital society.

Abstract

Consumerism is an increasingly dominant phenomenon in modern society along with the development of capitalism, globalization, and information technology. Society's consumption patterns have shifted from being primarily oriented toward fulfilling needs to fulfilling symbolic desires. In this context, Jean Baudrillard's thinking is relevant in explaining that consumption is no longer based on use value, but rather on the sign value inherent in a commodity. This study aims to analyze the phenomenon of consumerism in modern society through Jean Baudrillard's critical perspective and to uncover its social implications. The research method used is a qualitative approach with library research, which examines various scientific literature, books, and journals related to consumerism and simulation theory. The results show that consumerism has created a pseudo-reality (simulacra), where individuals consume based on symbolic impulses shaped by the media, advertising, and popular culture. Consumption becomes a means to construct self-identity and gain social recognition, thus encouraging excessive consumer behavior. Furthermore, this phenomenon also results in social alienation, identity crises, and dependence on the global capitalist system. Thus, consumerism is not only an economic activity but also a complex socio-cultural phenomenon. Therefore, critical awareness is needed so that society can be more rational and selective in its consumption practices

Abstract

Prayer (ṣalāh) holds a central and indispensable place within the Islamic faith as one of the most fundamental acts of devotion. This study is designed to investigate the extent to which salah contributes to the formation and strengthening of religious consciousness among Muslims, as manifested in changes to individual attitudes, conduct, and discipline in everyday life. Employing a qualitative design grounded in library-based research, this study draws on primary Islamic sources, including the Qur'an and prophetic traditions, alongside relevant contemporary scholarly works. The findings reveal that the consistent practice of salah, carried out with sincerity and mindfulness, plays a meaningful role in cultivating spirituality, deepening the bond between humanity and the Creator, and fostering conduct that aligns with Islamic values. Moreover, salah is demonstrated to serve as an effective mechanism for self-regulation, discouraging unethical behavior while enhancing individual moral character. In conclusion, salah transcends its ritual dimension to function as a vital and holistic instrument for building comprehensive religious consciousness in the daily lives of Muslims.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how nepotism can manifest through the role of informal institutions and its influence on administrative integrity within the bureaucracy. The method used is literature analysis by examining various related scientific references, such as books, journal articles, and research, which are then analyzed descriptively and analytically through identification, classification, and data integration. The research findings indicate that nepotism does not only arise from weaknesses in the official system, but is also strongly influenced by the existence of informal institutions such as personal networks, social norms, and organizational culture. This practice tends to persist within a system because it gains social recognition, making it difficult to overcome solely with regulations. The consequences include a decline in employee professionalism, weak accountability, and erosion of administrative integrity, which impacts on reduced public trust in government institutions. The implications of this study indicate that a comprehensive approach is crucial in bureaucratic reform, through strengthening the official system and changing organizational cultural values to produce transparent, accountable, and dignified government management.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of assertive communication techniques in cross-cultural counseling for reducing avoidance behavior among students experiencing interpersonal friendship conflicts. Cultural differences between counselors and clients may influence communication patterns, emotional expression, and conflict resolution processes during counseling sessions. Friendship conflicts among university students commonly arise from jealousy, misunderstanding, social comparison, and ineffective interpersonal communication. These conditions often encourage students to avoid direct interaction to prevent further conflict. This study employed an experimental method using a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design. The participants were students who experienced friendship conflicts and demonstrated avoidance behavior tendencies. Data were collected through counseling individual. The intervention was delivered through counseling sessions that used assertive communication techniques and combined behavioral and humanistic approaches in a cross-cultural counseling setting. The findings revealed that assertive communication techniques were effective in reducing students’ avoidance behavior. After receiving the intervention, participants demonstrated greater confidence in expressing opinions, improved emotional regulation, increased openness in communication, and healthier interpersonal relationships. The study indicates that assertive communication in cross-cultural counseling can serve as an effective counseling strategy to help students manage interpersonal conflicts and improve social adjustment in higher education environments.

Abstract

This research article examines a phenomenon that is quite popular among Generation Z, namely self-reward, as a cognitive rationalization mechanism that transforms impulsive urges into socially legitimized consumption behaviors within the TikTok Shop ecosystem among Indonesian Generation Z. Using a qualitative approach based on a literature review with Jean Baudrillard’s theory of the consumer society as the primary analytical framework, this study identifies two key issues: first, how the self-reward narrative functions as a rationalization mechanism for impulsive buying behavior; and second, how the design of the TikTok Shop platform systematically creates conditions that facilitate the activation of this narrative. The analysis reveals that self-reward has undergone a significant shift in meaning from achievement-based self-appreciation to desire-based consumerist justification through four cognitive stages: emotional stimulus, cognitive conflict, moral licensing activation, and post-hoc rationalization. From a Baudrillardian perspective, consumption on TikTok Shop is no longer functional but rather semiotic, where purchases serve as expressions of identity and social differentiation. Platform designs such flash sales, live streaming, scarcity framing, the FYP algorithm, and the pay feature synergistically create an ecosystem that shortens consumers’ reflective pauses and reinforces a cycle of impulsive buying that is difficult to break.

Abstract

This study examines the role and influence of Prince Liting in the leadership of the Pegagan Ilir Clan II in the Ogan Ilir region of South Sumatra, and how his legacy of leadership remains alive in the community's collective memory even though the clan system has long been abolished. This study uses a historical approach by exploring primary and secondary sources related to the history of clan governance in South Sumatra. The results show that Prince Liting succeeded in establishing multi-layered legitimacy from both the people, the Dutch colonial government, and the religious community through leadership that combined customary authority with Islamic commitment. His grave in Tanjung Raja now serves as a site of collective memory that goes beyond its usual ceremonial function, reflecting how the local community actively maintains continuity with its historical heritage. The abolition of the clan system in 1983 did not immediately erase the symbolic relevance of its leaders; on the contrary, figures like Prince Liting were further solidified as icons of communal identity. These findings confirm that the historical legitimacy of a local leader is far more enduring than the formal institutions that once protected them.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of counseling services in reducing anxiety in individuals through a literature review. Anxiety is a psychological condition characterized by excessive worry, emotional tension, and physical and cognitive impairments that can impact academic, social, and daily life activities. The study was conducted using a qualitative approach through data collection from various scientific articles, journals, and relevant library sources regarding counseling interventions to reduce anxiety. The research process included problem identification, literature collection, screening of relevant sources, data analysis, and synthesis of previous research findings. The study results indicate that various counseling approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT), systematic desensitization techniques, cognitive restructuring, and relaxation techniques, have been proven effective in reducing individual anxiety levels. These interventions help individuals change negative thought patterns to more adaptive ones, improve their ability to regulate emotions, and reduce physiological responses to anxiety. Furthermore, a comfortable environment and structured counseling support also influence the success of the intervention. Thus, counseling services play a crucial role in helping individuals overcome anxiety and improve mental health and psychological well-being.

Abstract

The era of globalization and advances in digital technology has brought considerable challenges to the world of education, one of which is the declining learning motivation among students in Pancasila Education subject, largely attributed to teaching approaches that tend to be repetitive and lack variation. This study aims to examine the effect of implementing the "Sang Garuda" Digital Pop-Up Book media on the learning motivation of third-grade students at SDN Gili Timur 1 in Pancasila Education subject. A quantitative approach with a Pre-Experimental One Group Pre-Test Post-Test Design was employed, involving 22 students selected through saturated sampling technique. Data were gathered using a Likert scale-based questionnaire administered both prior to and following the intervention. The Shapiro-Wilk test revealed that the data did not follow a normal distribution; therefore, hypothesis testing was carried out using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results yielded a Z value of -3.321 with Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed) = 0.001 < 0.05, confirming a significant influence of the media on students' learning motivation. The mean score rose from 13.50 to 16.00, with 81.8% of students demonstrating positive improvement. These findings suggest the importance of incorporating nationally-themed digital media as an innovative alternative in Pancasila Education learning to foster greater enthusiasm and active student engagement amid the ever-growing tide of globalization.

Abstract

This study examines the revenue deduction system and employment relations of online motorcycle taxi drivers from the perspective of Karl Marx's historical materialism. The research background arises from the development of digital transportation platforms that have created new partnership-based work patterns, but in practice, have given rise to unequal employment relations and income uncertainty for drivers. This study aims to analyze the mechanism of the revenue deduction system and employment relations between platform companies and online motorcycle taxi drivers, and examine how these practices reflect the distribution of profits and production relations in digital capitalism. This study uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques through semi-structured interviews with online motorcycle taxi drivers as primary informants and service users as supporting informants. Data are analyzed thematically using a historical materialism perspective to understand the relationship between control of digital production tools and driver work positions. The results show that although drivers are given flexible working hours, the platform maintains strong control through algorithms, rating systems, incentives, and revenue deductions. The revenue deduction system functions as a mechanism for extracting surplus value that strengthens drivers' economic dependence on the platform. The resulting employment relations are asymmetrical, with the platform company in a dominant position in determining work rules and profit distribution. This study confirms that work flexibility in the platform economy is illusory and requires fairer labor regulations to protect the welfare of online motorcycle taxi drivers.
