Abstract

Sepsis neonatorum is a serious blood infection in newborns, mainly affecting premature or low birth weight infants. Early detection is tough, but new research suggests platelet indices could help diagnose it faster. The objective of this study is to analyze the diagnostic value of platelet indices (platelet count, MPV, and PDW) as early markers in suspected neonatal sepsis compared with the gold standard (blood culture). This was an observational analytical study with a retrospective cohort design conducted at the Adam Malik Hospital. A total of 115 suspected neonatal sepsis samples were enrolled. Data collection included demographic characteristics, platelet count, mean platelet volume (MPV), and platelet distribution width (PDW). The data were obtained from secondary sources in medical records and entered into the SPSS software for analysis. Statistical analysis was performed using receiver operator curve (ROC) to assess the diagnostic value of platelet indices (platelet, MPV, and PDW). The study involved 115 newborns suspected of neonatal sepsis, with 46.1% male and 53.9% female. Most were delivered via cesarean section and diagnosed with early onset sepsis. Common clinical signs included respiratory distress and distension. Key risk factors included prolonged rupture of membranes and low birth weight. Blood culture revealed Klebsiella pneumonia as the most common pathogen. Platelet indices showed varied sensitivity and specificity as predictors of sepsis. Diagnostic tests had low sensitivity but varied specificity for detecting sepsis with platelet count, MPV, and PDW.

Abstract

Customer loyalty is a vital factor influencing sustainability and competitiveness in the pharmaceutical industry. Loyalty is determined by the quality of services provided and the robustness of the pharmacy's brand image. This research investigates the impact of brand image and service quality on customer loyalty at MM Pharmacy. A quantitative research design was employed utilizing Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM), with data gathered via surveys from 100 respondents selected through purposive sampling based on the Slovin formula. The findings indicate that brand image and service quality substantially influence consumer loyalty, with brand image exerting a more pronounced effect. Effect size analysis (f²) revealed that brand image exerted a substantial influence on customer loyalty (f² = 0.376), while service quality exhibited a minimal effect (f² = 0.130). This study also indicates that the R² value of 0.737 demonstrates that the joint impact of brand image and service quality explains 73.7% of the variance in customer loyalty, signifying a significant impact. The remaining 26.3% may be affected by additional variables not incorporated in the model. Furthermore, the Q² value, which evaluates predictive relevance, confirms the model's capability to accurately predict unobserved data by considering both exogenous and endogenous variables.

Abstract

During pregnancy, significant physiological changes occur that can cause discomfort in pregnant women. One of the discomforts experienced by pregnant women is the occurrence of constipation. Constipation in pregnant women is caused by an increase in progesterone production which causes a decrease in smooth muscle tone, including in the digestive system, resulting in a slowdown of the digestive system. Prenatal yoga can be one of the alternative non-pharmacological therapies to reduce such discomfort. Objective to determine the effect of prenatal yoga on the incidence of constipation on the discomfort of pregnant women. Pre-experiment with a pre-post test control group design research. The number of samples used was 30 people.  The sampling technique used purposive sampling, with the inclusion criteria of pregnant women in the second trimester who were willing to participate in all stages of the study and had no contraindications to do prenatal yoga. The experimental group will follow a prenatal yoga session conducted for 6 weeks. Constipation measurement was carried out using a Constipation Scoring System (CSS) questionnaire. Data analysis used the Paired t-test statistical test. After the yoga intervention there was a decrease in the average score of constipation (4.1 vs 3.6), the maximum value of constipation is now only 6 from the previous 8.  Respondents who experienced moderate constipation were also reduced quite drastically, namely only 5 people (16.67%) remained and this difference was statistically significant (p value 0.002< 0.05). Prenatal yoga can overcome constipation in pregnant women.

Abstract

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one of the chronic complications that frequently occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM). PAD can be detected early using the non-invasive Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) method. An abnormal ABI value may indicate impaired peripheral blood flow and serves as an important indicator of the risk of amputation and cardiovascular morbidity. The aim of this study was to analyze the factors affecting ABI values in patients with DM, namely age, sex, Body Mass Index (BMI), duration of DM, smoking status, physical activity, foot care status, history of DM complications, adherence to DM therapy, and blood glucose levels. This research employed a quantitative descriptive non-experimental approach with a cross-sectional design. The sample was obtained through accidental sampling, resulting in 106 respondents. Data were analyzed using the Spearman’s rho correlation test. The findings revealed that factors significantly associated with ABI values included duration of DM (p = 0.000), smoking status (p = 0.029), foot care status (p = 0.000), history of DM complications (p = 0.000), adherence to DM therapy (p = 0.000), and blood glucose levels (p = 0.000). The results of this study are expected to encourage respondents, particularly DM patients, to improve their overall adherence to diabetes therapy.

Abstract

The Green Economy concept in the healthcare sector is an important strategy to improve the sustainability and efficiency of hospital operations. As institutions that operate 24 hours a day, hospitals consume significant amounts of energy and produce medical and non-medical waste that can impact the environment if not managed properly. This study aims to analyze the implementation of Green Economy principles at Bina Kasih Hospital in Pekanbaru, focusing on three main policy instruments: energy efficiency, waste management, and service digitalization systems, and their relationship to improving hospital operational efficiency and sustainability. This study used a mixed method with a quantitative and qualitative design to obtain a comprehensive picture. Quantitative data were obtained from 40 respondents who were purposively selected using a standardized questionnaire. The validity test results showed that all question items had a calculated r value > 0.444 (with 20 samples), thus being declared valid. Meanwhile, the reliability test results using Cronbach's Alpha were 0.906, indicating an excellent level of internal consistency (higher than the minimum limit of 0.60). Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with key stakeholders in the hospital environment. Data analysis was conducted using univariate, bivariate (Chi-square test), and multivariate (logistic regression) analyses for quantitative data, as well as SWOT analysis and Cost-Benefit Analysis to strengthen the qualitative findings. The results showed that the digitalization system had the strongest influence on operational efficiency (p=0.001; PR=2.754), followed by waste management (p=0.023; PR=2.056) and energy efficiency policies (p=0.045; PR=1.821). Key challenges include limited infrastructure, inconsistent policy enforcement, and low employee awareness. However, the implementation of Green Economy strategies has been shown to improve cost efficiency, strengthen the institution's reputation, and support environmental sustainability.

Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures due to abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The seizure mechanism involves neurotransmitter imbalance, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Recent studies highlight the role of the gut–brain axis, emphasizing probiotics such as Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp., which potentially stabilize the nervous system through microbiota modulation and anti-inflammatory effects. This review aims to systematically assess preclinical evidence on the efficacy of Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. as adjunctive therapies to reduce seizures in epilepsy through molecular and gut–brain axis mechanisms. This systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines, with literature searches performed in Google Scholar, PubMed, Taylor & Francis, and ScienceDirect, including publications from 2015 to 2025 (1576 articles to 13 articles), and inclusion criteria based on the PICOS framework. Risk of bias was assessed using Sycle’s risk of bias tool. A total of 13 in vivo preclinical studies of Lactobacillus spp. and Bifidobacterium spp. reported significant effectiveness in reducing seizure symptoms and regulating excitatory–inhibitory neurotransmitter balance in rat models of induced epilepsy. Probiotics have potential as effective alternative therapies in modulating seizure reduction and maintaining neurotransmitter balance during epilepsy. They may be developed in the future as non-pharmacological therapeutics based on microbiota.

Abstract

Perioperative assessment is essential to optimize surgical outcomes and reduce complications, especially in cancer patients who often have complex clinical conditions. This systematic review aims to provide an overview of existing domains and practices in perioperative assessment specific to cancer patients. A systematic search was conducted in databases including ScienceDirect, Scopus, PubMed, and Google Scholar, identifying 1,071 articles. After removing 384 duplicates, 687 articles underwent title and abstract screening, leading to the exclusion of 980 articles. Forty-five full-text articles were reviewed for eligibility; 16 were excluded due to inaccessibility, resulting in 12 articles included in the final analysis. Data were synthesized descriptively to identify common assessment domains and practices. The review found several key domains commonly assessed perioperatively in cancer patients, such as nutritional status, frailty, psychological health, cardiopulmonary function, and immunological parameters. However, there is notable variability in the instruments and methods used across studies, indicating a lack of standardized assessment protocols. Comprehensive perioperative evaluations that integrate these domains may enhance surgical planning and risk prediction in oncology patients. While multiple domains are recognized as important in perioperative cancer assessment, standardized and integrated approaches remain limited. Addressing these gaps could improve risk stratification and patient outcomes, although challenges like tool inconsistency, interdisciplinary coordination, and resource availability must be overcome.

Abstract

Language stimulation is essential for children’s language development. Advances in technology have promoted the use of audiovisual tools in language development interventions. Numerous studies have explored technology based language interventions, existing literature lacks an integrated overview of how different audiovisual tools contribute to children’s language outcomes. This review aims to identify and categorize various audiovisual interventions that have been employed in previous studies to enhance children's language abilities. A scoping review methodology was applied, following the PRISMA 2020 protocol. Articles were sourced from three databases—Scopus, PubMed, and EBSCO—based on the inclusion criteria of open-access, full-text, English-language articles published between 2020 and 2025, focusing on language development interventions in children aged 2–12 years. A total of 7.313 records were identified, and 13 studies met the inclusion criteria for analysis. The review identified three main types of audiovisual interventions: Socially assistive robots, augmented reality, and mobile assisted language learning. These interventions have been shown to improve various aspects of children's language abilities, including articulation, vocabulary, and learning engagement. Audiovisual-based interventions have the potential to support children's language development. The findings of this review may serve as a basis for educating parents and healthcare professionals about children's language development.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence is an important factor influencing academic performance, especially in high-stress fields like medicine. Medical students face rigorous academic demands, making emotional intelligence crucial for coping and achieving optimal performance. Demographic factors, such as gender, residence, and academic year, may also influence learning experiences. Objective: This study examines the influence of emotional intelligence, gender, residence, and academic year on the academic performance of medical students. A cross-sectional study was conducted from October to December 2023 at a university in Indonesia. The sample selection technique used total sampling, resulting in a sample size of 426 medical students. A structured questionnaire collected demographic data and grade point average (GPA), while the Emotional Competence Inventory 2.0 measured emotional intelligence. Data were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis and Mann–Whitney tests. The mean emotional intelligence score was 161.2±19.4, with 8.5% of students in the high category. Age (p=0.013) and academic year (p=0.049) significantly affected academic performance, while residence and emotional intelligence showed no significant effect (p>0.05). Age and academic year had a stronger influence on academic performance than emotional intelligence or residence among medical students.

Abstract

Students' concentration during learning can have a significant impact both in the present and in the future. Poor concentration can lead to memory issues, suboptimal learning outcomes, and if not properly addressed, can result in long-term consequences, such as a decline in the quality of human resources. The objective is to identify the relationship between students' learning concentration and nutritional status, breakfast habits, and sleep quality. Quantitative research using a cross-sectional design, on 53 elementary school students. A questionnaire was employed to measure the variables of breakfast habits and sleep quality. Anthropometric measurements were based on Z-scores according to Body Mass Index (BMI), adjusted for the students' gender and age, to assess nutritional status. Statistical analysis was conducted using the Chi-square test. A total of 78.2% of students had good concentration, 81.8% had good nutritional status, 69.1% regularly ate breakfast, and 40% had good sleep quality. A significant relationship was found between breakfast habits (p=0.011) and sleep quality (p=0.008). However, no significant relationship was found between nutritional status and concentration (p=0.096). There is a significant relationship between breakfast habits and sleep quality, indicating the importance of educating students and parents on these topics. Although no significant relationship was found between nutritional status and concentration, monitoring and supporting students' nutritional status should continue, with collaboration from health institutions such as local health centers (Puskesmas).
