Abstract

Surakarta City has long been associated with religious radicalism, positioning it as a critical site for studying Islamic moderation in Indonesia. This study aims to explore how religious communities in Surakarta construct and negotiate a moderate Islamic identity through the use of symbols and narratives, in response to stigmatization as a center of extremism. Employing a qualitative approach, data were collected through in-depth interviews with nine religious leaders from various organizations, participatory observations, and analysis of religious documents and local media. Thematic coding and triangulation techniques were used to ensure analytical rigor and validity. The findings reveal that symbols such as traditional attire, inclusive religious rituals, and narratives rooted in local Islamic history are strategically mobilized to promote a peaceful and nationalist version of Islam. These symbolic strategies serve not only to legitimize the presence of moderate communities in public space but also to resist and counter radical stereotypes. The study demonstrates that Islamic moderation at the local level emerges through complex, deliberate cultural processes rather than passive adaptation. It contributes to the discourse on community-based religious moderation and provides empirical insights for culturally grounded deradicalization policies.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the communication patterns formed within the Pahlawan Women's Farmer Group (KWT) and its role in the development of vegetable farming businesses. Communication is an essential aspect in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of group programs. Using a qualitative approach, data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation from KWT members. The results indicate that in the management of farming activities, there are two main communication patterns: two-way communication and multi-way communication. The two-way communication pattern is reflected in the interaction between the leader and group members, which is dialogical and allows for balanced information exchange. Meanwhile, the multi-way communication pattern is shown through open discussions between members and with external parties, such as agricultural extension workers. This communication occurs both directly and through media such as WhatsApp and posters. The effectiveness of communication is significantly influenced by the leader's skills, the education level of members, and the frequency of meetings. These findings highlight the importance of participatory and open communication patterns as a foundation for the success of women's farmer empowerment programs and the improvement of vegetable farming productivity.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of interpersonal communication between teachers and students in the Pancasila Education learning process, specifically in grades IV and VI. The research also identifies the factors that hinder effective communication in the classroom, including barriers to message delivery and student engagement. Interpersonal communication is crucial in the learning process as it influences student understanding and participation, especially in moral and civic education subjects such as Pancasila Education. The research utilizes a qualitative approach with descriptive methodology, focusing on data gathered through observations, interviews, and documentation. A purposive sampling method was employed to select key informants, including teachers and students from the Pancasila Education classes. Data analysis followed the steps of data collection, reduction, display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that while interpersonal communication between teachers and students is generally effective, challenges persist, such as the lack of learning media and excessive verbal or emotional messages from teachers that hinder student participation. These communication barriers contribute to misunderstandings and decreased student engagement during lessons. Based on these findings, the study recommends that teachers enhance their communication strategies by incorporating visual aids and reducing overly emotional or complex verbal communication. Furthermore, fostering a more interactive and inclusive classroom environment could help improve students' comprehension and active involvement in Pancasila Education.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the higher education system. Initially, the learning process was conducted offline, where students engaged in face-to-face interaction. However, due to the pandemic, the learning system shifted to an online format. This study aims to determine student perceptions of online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, assessed in terms of the following aspects: preferred learning media in online learning, knowledge or understanding, social competence, media usage skills, and obstacles encountered in online learning. This research employed a descriptive quantitative research. This study invited 187 students of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education to fill an online survey administered through Google Forms. The online survey method was used for data collection purpose. Data analysis revealed that the online learning platform students preferred most was WhatsApp, as it allowed them to  save internet quota. Students' understanding of lecture materials during online learning was still lacking, their social competence did not increase, but their ability to use technology during online learning increased. The most dominant obstacles were technical problems, particularly network problems and limited internet quota. However, students still preferred offline learning to online learning. Therefore, in learning, lecturers should be able to combine both modes of learning, and provide online learning that can minimize internet data usage.

Abstract

This study examines the implementation of restorative justice through diversion mechanisms in Indonesia’s juvenile criminal justice system, compared with practices in Belgium. Using a juridical-comparative approach, the research analyzes legislation, international legal instruments, and relevant academic literature. The focus is on diversion policy, community involvement, and institutional challenges in applying restorative justice. The findings reveal that Indonesia has a strong normative foundation through the Juvenile Criminal Justice Law (2012) and Government Regulation No. 58/2022, which substantively align with the cultural value of musyawarah (deliberation). However, implementation remains hindered by regulatory overlaps, weak institutional capacity, and limited community participation. In contrast, Belgium demonstrates a more established system, with a clear separation between juvenile and adult justice, strong institutional support, and consistent application of diversion as a primary response to juvenile delinquency. The comparison highlights that although Indonesia possesses cultural compatibility with restorative justice, its implementation lags significantly behind Belgium. This study contributes to legal scholarship by offering concrete recommendations are harmonizing conflicting regulations, strengthening the capacity of LPKS and probation institutions, enhancing the role of law enforcement in facilitating diversion, and empowering communities through legal awareness. The findings reaffirm the need to shift from punitive approaches toward child protection and reintegration as the core principle of restorative justice.

Abstract

Beginner learners of Mandarin often struggle with pronunciation, pinyin, and complex vocabulary, especially when instructional materials are not adapted to their proficiency levels. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of individualized instruction (one-to-one tutoring) and group-based instruction (one-to-many teaching) in supporting beginner students’ Mandarin learning. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with a case study design, the research involved 35 middle school students at Charles Wesley Methodist Private Middle School. Five students with the lowest pretest scores received one-to-one instruction, while the remaining thirty participated in group-based learning. Data were collected through participatory observation, documentation of learning outcomes, and student reflections, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s framework, including reduction, categorization, and thematic analysis. Results show that one-to-one instruction was particularly effective in improving pronunciation accuracy and comprehension for low-achieving and less confident students, while group-based instruction fostered motivation, peer collaboration, and vocabulary mastery, especially among active learners. The findings emphasize that teaching effectiveness depends on aligning instructional methods with learner characteristics. This study contributes to second language acquisition research by highlighting the importance of differentiated instruction. Limitations include the small sample size, single-site context, and the dual role of the researcher. Future research should expand the participant pool and explore hybrid models combining the strengths of both approaches.
