Abstract

This study aims to analyze mental health and anxiety levels during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study focused on students who were forced to study at home by e-learning. This study used as many as 210 students from junior high school, senior high school, and university levels which were selected randomly. Then, this study used a mixed-method by combining quantitative and qualitative approaches. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to obtain empirical results to compare mental health and anxiety levels based on student age groups. The analysis results revealed there was a positive and significant influence of the students’ age group on mental health and anxiety levels during the outbreak of COVID-19. The analysis also concluded that students in the 12-15 years’ age group had the worst mental health level. Meanwhile, students in the 20-25 years’ age group are known to have the lowest anxiety level. Overall, this study found that Indonesian students experienced a decline in mental health and detected an increase in anxiety levels. The level of mental health and student anxiety has implications for their learning at home, which can lead to unsatisfactory learning outcomes.

On the other hand, secondary data was collected at Department of Education regarding the elementary school classifications at Hindang District as follows: good, better and outstanding. With the aid of ordered logit models, the study highlighted some influencing factors of school classification governed by school leaders. Results showed that on the average, elementary schools in Hindang District are considered to be “better” based on the DepEd classification. This implies that these schools have a room for improvement with the help of an effective school leaders. Based on the constructed ordered logit models, it is shown that a personal attribute of a school leader has an inverse effect in outstanding school classification. The result showed that there was an effect of the implementation of Mind Mapping method in learning civic education on the critical thinking skills of class X students. This is indicated by the increase of  of the post-test that is 7.923. In addition, the ttable on df 60 was 2.000, and the significance value of 0.000 was smaller than the significance level of 5% (0.000 < 0.05). Mind mapping as a learning method can be used as a solution to improve students' critical thinking in the learning process in order to achieve learning goals.

Abstract

Studies in Indonesian Higher Education students’critical thinking skills, have shown that they still need reinforcement. Hereby, Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction offers steps of activities to facilitate this. This article reports the results of a case study on the assessment of Indonesian Higher Education students’critical thinking skills in each step of Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction (Problem, Actication, Demonstration, Application, and Integration) during Classroom Action Research Course for students of batch 2017 of English Language Education Department. Through descriptive qualitative analysis of assessment rubric of critical thinking, it was found that the assessments given in each step of Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction could trigger the students’ critical thinking skills assisting them to manage to formulate proposal for conducting Classroom Action Research. This provides insights to craft assessment in line with Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction as to promote students’ critical thinking skills. Therefore, it could be suggested for other researchers to conduct similar research using more careful and detailed criteria of critical thinking rubric when implementing Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction.

Abstract

Higher-order thinking skills critical to being applied and developed in learning. Because the learning activity is focused on the higher-order thinking skills development, then learning activities will be more influential, effective, and efficient, so that the intellectual abilities of teachers and students become more skilled, it positively will affect the increase in the quality of education. There is a gap in students' critical thinking ability based on the pre-research survey results. The basic level of thinking is in the poor category, and self-efficacy is still lacking. This study aims to determine the extent to which the application of higher-order thinking skills learning through the problem-based learning (PBL) model improves student's critical thinking and self-efficacy. This study uses a quasi-experimental design and data collection techniques in tests, questionnaires, and observation sheets. This study's population was 123 students, sampling using a convenience sampling technique so that the sample used was 62 students. Based on the research results, there are differences. There is an increase between students' critical thinking skills and self-efficacy who use the PBL model rather than the conventional model. The research result implies that the PBL model is highly recommended for economics teachers. Still, it is necessary to provide innovation in the learning model so that in the learning process, it uses one model and innovates with other models.
