Abstract

Character building becomes an essential part in the science learning process to prepare the students as the next generations of our nations. This study aims to develop a valid, practical, and effective learning model combined with indigenous science content for junior high school students in developing local wisdom-based characters and high-order thinking skills. This research is a a research and development (R & D) approach with the Borg and Gall model involving 36 junior high school science teachers (72 teachers). The research instrument were a character questionnaire as well as a test of problem-solving, critical and creative thinking tests, along with an assessment rubric to measure the depth of students' cognitive abilities. From the results of the learning model trial, it was found that there are eight characters based on Balinese local wisdom that can be developed in science learning for junior high school students namely religious, being honest (satyam), tolerance (tat twam asi), responsible (sesana/swadharma), curious, jengah, hardworking and generous, caring and friendly with nature. Conceptually, the core stages of the junior high school science learning model to develop Balinese local wisdom based characters include: initial exploration, investigation from various perspectives, elaboration, and confirmation and reinforcement. The stages in the science learning model that develop characters based on local wisdom provide opportunities for teachers to improve students' cognitive abilities, especially in the realm of higher-order thinking skills.

Abstract

Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has impacted throughout all aspects of human life including education.  Despite the previously applied distance education or e-learning in the conventional education, nowadays this instructional model became a newly common approach in education. Therefore, students have to make some adjustments in their learning approach in order to reach out their learning goals. Self-regulated learning (SRL) is a process of monitoring and controlling learning behaviors to achieve learning goals. One of the key factors that contribute to SRL is achievement goal orientation. The aim of this study is to find out the role of types of goal orientation towards metacognitive self-regulation. A total of 320 undergraduate students participated in this study. The findings showed that performance approach and performance avoidance were the significant predictors of metacognitive self-regulation. Students’ preferences to performance goal-orientations were associated with the preliminary study findings that the new instructional model was related to decreased students’ efficacy in learning and feelings of uncertainty to their academic achievement.

Abstract

This article presents theoretical and empirical reviews on the nature, rationale and the implementation of teaching model developing students’ 4C skills in the classroom. It also shares the research result conducted in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) Course of English Education Study Program. This descriptive research was conducted in the form of Research and Development Model by Gall, Gall, and Borg which resulted in the development of 4C-based learning model integrated in task-based learning framework. The expert judgement on the quality of the model proved that the developed model gained the mean score of 4.85 (from 5 Likert Scale) which means that the model was considered very good. The 4C-based learning model is a solutive learning model to be used in the 21st century in delivering TEFL course. Thus, it is expected that the lecturers of TEFL Course implement the model regularly to enable student teachers to obtain the required skills later both in their real teaching practicum and in their future career.
