Abstract

Rural women play an essential yet often invisible role in village development, especially in regions where cultural and religious norms define gendered participation. This qualitative study, conducted in Suwangi Village, East Lombok, involved ethnographic observations and semi-structured interviews with 15 informants, including female officials, religious and customary leaders, and community members. Findings show that around 85% of women engage in micro-economic activities such as food processing and home-based trading, 80% participate in social organizations (PKK and Posyandu), yet less than 20% are represented in formal village decision-making forums. Despite these disparities, new opportunities are emerging through female role models, inclusive religious discourse, and reinterpretations of adat norms. The study reveals that Sasak cultural identity and Islamic values simultaneously constrain and enable women’s public participation—religious and customary leaders now serve as crucial mediators legitimizing gender equality within local development frameworks. Scientifically, this study contributes to the discourse on gender and development by providing empirical micro-level evidence from a culturally specific Muslim community, illustrating how gendered agency evolves through the interaction of tradition, religion, and institutional structures. It advances theoretical understanding of contextualized empowerment, showing that bottom-up, culturally rooted strategies can complement formal gender mainstreaming policies. The findings highlight the importance of integrating local cultural legitimacy into gender-inclusive rural governance models, particularly in areas shaped by strong religious and customary traditions like East Lombok.

Abstract

Climate change has a significant impact on the marine sector and poses a serious threat to the livelihoods of coastal communities. One area that has felt the real impact of these conditions is Tambak Mulyo, Semarang City, Central Java. The vast sea that surrounds it is rich in shrimp, leading most of the local community to work as shrimp fishermen. However, climate change has hindered their productivity and caused income instability. This study aims to (1) examine the work culture of shrimp fishermen, (2) describe the impacts of climate change on their working patterns, and (3) analyze the forms of social resilience practiced by shrimp fishermen in Tambak Mulyo through Keck and Sakdapolrak’s theory of social resilience, which consists of three main aspects: coping, adaptive, and transformative capacities. This research employs a qualitative method using a case study approach. The data were obtained through participant observation, semi-structured interviews, documentation, and a literature review of articles relevant to the research topic. The results show that shrimp fishermen in Tambak Mulyo experience income decline due to unpredictable weather. However, they endure these challenges through social resilience, including work diversification, family involvement in economic activities, and the nombok (debt pay-later) system. Therefore, this study highlights that cooperation and strong social ties are vital to sustaining community resilience. These findings are particularly important because Tambak Mulyo serves as a major shrimp production center that remains highly vulnerable to the complex impacts of climate change.

Abstract

This study aims to examine how Indonesian women who simultaneously fulfill the roles of wife, mother, professional worker, and postgraduate student manage multiple role conflicts through interpersonal and intrapersonal communication. Using a qualitative case study design, six postgraduate students from the University of Indonesia were purposively selected as participants. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate three major themes. First, interpersonal communication with spouses, family members, colleagues, and academic peers facilitates mutual understanding and role negotiation. Second, intrapersonal communication, such as self-reflection and emotional regulation, helps participants cope with guilt, fatigue, and academic pressure. Third, social support networks emerging from effective communication enable participants to sustain their motivation and maintain balance across domestic, professional, and academic domains. These findings highlight that communication functions as a practical strategy for managing multiple identities and mitigating the effects of role conflict. The study offers implications for developing gender-sensitive communication training and institutional support systems to empower women in higher education and the workplace.

Abstract

This study examines community empowerment strategies based on local wisdom in the border area of Entikong, Sanggau Regency, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. The research focuses on three key dimensions—economic self-reliance, social resilience, and environmental sustainability. Using a qualitative and descriptive approach, data were gathered through in-depth interviews, participatory observations, and documentation involving village leaders, community institutions, and residents. The findings reveal that integrating local wisdom such as gotong royong (mutual cooperation), customary law, and traditional cultural practices strengthens social cohesion, enhances citizen participation, and promotes ecological balance. The Village Development Planning Forum (Musrenbang) functions as a participatory mechanism that aligns empowerment initiatives with community needs. However, challenges persist in product marketing and institutional capacity-building. The study concludes that local wisdom-based empowerment fosters sustainable community development when programs are socially and culturally adaptive. Theoretically, this research contributes to the discourse on culture-based empowerment within borderland studies, while practically, it offers a model for designing participatory and context-sensitive empowerment strategies applicable to other frontier regions.

Abstract

Abstract

This exploratory systematic review provides the first comprehensive examination of research at the intersection of economic diplomacy and agricultural development. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 423 Scopus records were systematically screened, with 127 studies meeting inclusion criteria for analysis using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool. The review identified four distinct research clusters: agricultural trade promotion and export development (35.4%), international cooperation and diplomatic initiatives (25.2%), market access and competitiveness strategies (22.0%), and policy analysis and institutional frameworks (17.3%). Geographic analysis revealed substantial focus on developing countries (78.7%), particularly in Asia (42.5%) and Africa (31.5%), addressing a critical gap in understanding economic diplomacy applications in these contexts. Integrated multi-stakeholder approaches showed promising outcomes for enhancing agricultural trade competitiveness. However, significant methodological limitations constrain findings. The predominance of case study designs, limited experimental research, and restriction to English-language Scopus-indexed publications limit both comprehensiveness and the strength of causal inferences about intervention effectiveness. Practically, policymakers in developing countries should prioritize multi-stakeholder diplomatic frameworks integrating agricultural ministries, trade promotion agencies, and private sector actors to enhance export competitiveness. Additionally, development agencies and researchers must invest in rigorous experimental studies to build evidence-based guidelines for economic diplomacy interventions, moving beyond descriptive approaches to establish what works and under what conditions. This foundation enables future comprehensive reviews and targeted empirical investigation in this emerging interdisciplinary field.

Abstract

SETIGI represents land that has lost its productivity and natural vegetation because it has been turned into a limestone mine. This condition has turned SETIGI into critical, barren land and a dumping ground for waste. Now, SETIGI has transformed into community-based tourism through the initiative of the local community, which has participatively and sustainably rehabilitated the land as a tourist site and carried out environmental restoration activities such as reforestation, with the aim of restoring the ecological function of the land. This study was conducted to analyse the socio-ecological aspects of post-mining tourism, both in terms of community behaviour and ecological factors related to tourism activities. This research uses qualitative methods with in-depth interviews with 8 informants, literature reviews, and description of results with triangulation validity. The results of this study indicate that community behaviour is related to environmental conditions. The establishment of SETIGI community-based tourism with the SES framework has brought about significant changes in the environment through sustainable land rehabilitation by local communities. Simple planning and activities without management are now systematic and organised. From a socio-cultural perspective, the community is more aware of the importance of cooperation and solidarity. From an ecological, there is greater concern for environmental cleanliness and active participation in its preservation. The socio-ecological impact of SETIGI's development also aims to improve the quality of human resources, emphasising that this change is not only about physical land, but also holistic and sustainable socio-ecological transformation thanks to the central role of local communities in accordance with the SES framework.

Abstract

Intergenerational social conflict in Indonesian migrant worker families represents a critical yet underexamined structural phenomenon that fundamentally disrupts family functioning, individual well-being, and cultural value transmission across multiple generations. This systematic literature review aims to comprehensively synthesize empirical evidence on the causal determinants, manifestation patterns, multidimensional impacts, and resolution strategies of intergenerational conflicts in Indonesian migrant worker families between 2020-2025. Following PRISMA guidelines, literature searches were conducted across Scopus, Web of Science, ProQuest, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, and Indonesian repositories (Garuda, Indonesia OneSearch). Initial identification yielded 309 articles; after duplicate removal, screening, and quality appraisal using CASP criteria, 28 high-quality peer-reviewed articles were systematically analyzed using NVivo 12 thematic analysis. Results reveal that conflicts emerge from boundary ambiguity caused by parental absence, communication disruptions intensified by Indonesian "halus" communication styles, and economic tensions reflecting divergent generational worldviews shaped by distinct historical experiences. Conflicts manifest through explicit financial disputes and latent role ambiguities, systematically undermining family resilience across legal-integrity, physical, socio-psychological, and socio-cultural dimensions while disrupting traditional value transmission and creating "intimate isolation" despite physical family proximity. Families employ culturally-specific adaptation strategies including accommodation approaches, spirituality-based coping through Islamic values, and economic diversification, though structural barriers limit effectiveness. Two critical interventions are recommended: developing holistic, culturally-sensitive migrant worker protection policies incorporating pre-departure family preparation programs, accessible remittance frameworks, and gender-specific provisions; and strengthening community-based family counseling services through culturally-appropriate conflict mediation training, intergenerational financial literacy programs, and accessible legal aid addressing migration-related disputes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyse how urbanisation and digital transformation processes affect economic inequality and the direction of inclusive social development. Using a qualitative approach based on a systematic literature review, this study reviews Scopus-indexed articles through the PRISMA approach and thematic analysis using NVivo 12 Plus. The results show that digitalisation in its early stages tends to widen income gaps, but in the long term, it can promote socio-economic integration through technology diffusion and increased human resource capacity. Indonesia dominates scientific publications on this topic, indicating the contextual urgency of addressing the challenges of urbanisation and inequality in the digital age. This study emphasises the importance of social development policies oriented towards digital inclusion and strengthening the capacity of local governments in managing sustainable urban transformation. The research recommendations are directed towards the development of digital literacy programmes, expansion of technological infrastructure, and increased cross-border academic collaboration to enrich social development studies in the digital era.
