Abstract

Abstract

Women play a significant role in the tourism industry in Bali and Jakarta. Disparities persist in access, leadership, and wages despite their high involvement in hotels, MICE, the creative economy, and micro-enterprises. This study aims to compare the roles of women in Bali and Jakarta, identify factors influencing their involvement, and assess adaptation strategies to work and domestic demands. The study employed mixed methods. Quantitative data were obtained through surveys of hotel managers in Bali and Jakarta. Qualitative data were collected through in-depth interviews with hotel managers and observations of operational activities. Women in Bali are more dominant in the creative economy sector, with strong local community support. Women in Jakarta are more likely to work in the formal sector, with broader access to training but still face barriers to promotion to managerial positions. Wage inequality persists in both regions. Women embrace flexible working hours, family support, and business diversification to maintain economic stability. These findings underscore the need for gender-friendly tourism policies, expanded access to professional training, provision of childcare services, and increased women's involvement in tourism decision-making. This study contributes to gender and tourism studies by integrating social capital and economic resilience perspectives in a cross-context urban-cultural comparison.

Abstract

In the past decade, social transformations such as pandemics, inequality, migration, and digitalization have significantly influenced the growth of social research. Research on the dynamics of public life in international databases is still lacking. The purpose of this study is to analyze trends in social work publications from 2015 to 2024 based on 43 journal articles specifically indexed using Scopus data. used with the help of Biblioshiny and VOSviewer software to analyze national productivity growth, scientific publications, collaboration networks, and key co-occurrence patterns. The study findings show that there has been an increase in the number of publications since 2020, with an initial focus on COVID-19 and mental health issues before shifting to social safety, social intervention, child safety, and policy issues. There has been a significant increase in the number of publications since 2020, with an initial focus on COVID-19 and mental health issues before shifting to social safety, social intervention, and child safety. The three main themes identified by the network analysis are professional and work-related dimensions, child welfare identified by families, and social and personal factors. The network analysis covers professional and work-related dimensions, as well as child and family welfare and social and personal factors. Based on the number of publications in the analyzed dataset, Indonesia has the highest contribution, even though the intensity of its international collaboration is relatively low. This needs to be carefully considered because the database and index structure can affect national representation. This study highlights the evolution of themes found in the Scopus corpus and emphasizes the importance of international collaboration and cross-database analysis to obtain more comprehensive information about the development of social work research around the world.

Abstract

The concept of Smart Coastal Economy (SCE) has emerged as a strategic approach to achieving sustainable coastal development through digital transformation and community empowerment. However, existing research largely examines digitalization and economic empowerment as separate domains, resulting in limited conceptual integration and the absence of a systematic synthesis explaining how both interact to shape coastal economic transformation. This gap hinders the development of an integrated analytical foundation for implementing SCE strategies, particularly in emerging coastal regions. This study aims to synthesize recent empirical evidence on digitalization and economic empowerment in coastal development to construct an integrative conceptual framework for SCE. A SLR was conducted using the PRISMA framework. Articles were retrieved from indexed academic databases, including Google Scholar, MDPI, IOP Science, ScienceDirect, PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and Elsevier. Publications were limited to the period from March 1, 2020, to February 28, 2025. The findings reveal three principal results. First, digitalization enhances coastal competitiveness and sustainability through improved resource efficiency, expanded market access, strengthened supply chain transparency, and environmentally responsible resource management; however, its effectiveness is conditional upon infrastructure readiness, governance support, and community digital literacy. Second, economic empowerment strengthens community capacity across economic, social, and institutional dimensions, particularly when integrating digital skills development, institutional strengthening, digital entrepreneurship, and ecological awareness. Third, the integration of digitalization and empowerment forms a structurally interdependent framework that generates systemic outcomes efficiency and productivity, socio-economic inclusion, and sustainability and resilience. These results provide an evidence-based conceptual foundation for advancing SCE strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

Indonesia continues to face structural challenges in smart city development, as reflected in the global positioning of its major cities in the IMD Smart City Index. In 2025, Jakarta, Medan, and Makassar were ranked 103, 113, and 114, respectively, placing all three cities in the lower tier of global smart city performance. Longitudinal analysis shows a consistent decrease in ranking positions from 2020 to 2025. Jakarta improved from 81 to 103, Medan from 94 to 113, and Makassar from 90 to 114, yet all cities remain structurally constrained within low tiers of global competitiveness. This study critically examines and developing a comprehensive analytical model to capture structural and technological gaps by a comparative analysis of the IMD index, which evaluates two pillars, Structure and Technology, across five dimensions: Health and Safety, Mobility, Opportunities, Activities, and Governance. Using a comparative case study approach with secondary data analysis the findings reveal a measurable structural technological imbalance. Jakarta demonstrates relatively stronger technological performance in digital public services, smart mobility, and health technologies, but remains weak in structural domains such as environmental quality, housing affordability, and social inclusiveness. Conversely, Medan and Makassar exhibit comparatively stronger socio-environmental foundations but lag significantly in technological adoption, particularly in digital governance and smart mobility. The imbalance between structural readiness and technological capacity indicates that smart city development in Indonesia remains fragmented. These findings underscore the need for integrated development strategies that harmonize technological innovation, sustainable infrastructure, and inclusive public services to enhance the global competitiveness of Indonesian cities.

Abstract

This study investigates how the green economy agenda is operationalised through eco-edu tourism along the Ciliwung River in Kelurahan Cikoko, South Jakarta. Drawing on qualitative case-study evidence, the research documents how the kelurahan initiated riverbank revitalisation by convening multi-actor collaboration involving residents and neighbourhood organisations, community groups, relevant government units, and private-sector support. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document review, and analysed through iterative coding (open–axial–selective) to trace how governance arrangements translated sustainability aims into practice. Empirically, the initiative transformed previously neglected riverbank segments into public eco-edu spaces featuring urban farming plots, community learning areas, and hands-on environmental programmes. Interview accounts highlight practical learning activities such as urban farming, waste management, rainwater processing, plant nurseries, and small-scale aquaculture, complemented by river-based experiential activities (e.g., river exploration/education programmes). These practices strengthened community participation and environmental literacy, while also generating micro-level economic benefits through cultivation outputs and visitor-linked activities. Persistent constraints were also identified, notably coordination burdens across institutions, limited and fragmented financing for routine maintenance, and the vulnerability of programme continuity to shifting political priorities. The study concludes that urban eco-edu tourism can function as a workable green economy instrument when cross-sector coordination is institutionalised, community co-management is supported, and resource-circular practices are embedded as visible learning infrastructure. The findings offer actionable implications for metropolitan governments seeking to implement green economy initiatives through community-based, education-oriented urban tourism.

Abstract

This study seeks to identify strategic themes, assess the incorporation of local values, and create a knowledge map derived from scientific literature pertaining to the administration of Penglipuran Tourism Village. This study employed a qualitative systematic review technique to assess 15 selected scientific articles published from 2015 to 2025. The study identified three primary findings: firstly, the literature reveals five strategic themes in the management of Penglipuran Tourism Village, which include the preservation of local wisdom, collaborative governance, environmental conservation, community participation, and marketing strategies grounded in legal certification. Secondly, native values such as awig-awig and Tri Hita Karana have been harmoniously incorporated into the village's regulations, social life, and economics, despite ongoing structural obstacles. The knowledge map offered an adjustable and scalable strategic framework that prioritizes cultural digitalization, community empowerment, and cross-sector collaboration for the creation of sustainable tourism villages. The research underscores the significance of multi- stakeholder engagement, digital innovation, and localized HR training as essential components for sustainability. The results are anticipated to provide a practical reference for policymakers, scholars, and managers of tourist villages in the development of culture-based and sustainable tourism models.
