Abstract

This study aimed to describe students' metacognitive awareness and higher-order thinking skills through environmental issues-discovery. The research design was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design. The data were collected through 52 Metacognitive Awareness Inventory (MAI) statements and the critical thinking test. The results show that the levels of students' metacognitive awareness are undeveloped (18 Percent), at-risk (8 Percent), poor (15 Percent), developed (22 Percent), high (14 Percent), and excellent (23 Percent). The discovery learning model significantly affects students' higher-order thinking skills (significant value of 0.000 with a 0.05 confidence level). Therefore, teachers are advised to utilize the surrounding environment in the discovery learning model to improve higher-order thinking skills and metacognitive awareness. Studies on other learning models need to be carried out to add references in organizing the learning process.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe the validity of the integration of religious values in BioPhy magazine and the religious character of pre-service science teachers when using the Floating Market-based BioPhy magazine. These religious values are related to the concept of fluidity, biodiversity, ecosystem, and the local character of South Kalimantan society, namely kayuh baimbai. This research was development research with Tessmer formative evaluation model. The test subjects to determine the religious character of students were 10 students from the Chemistry Education Department in the small group trial and 43 students from Biology Education Department in the field test. Both subjects were currently attending Fluid lectures in the 2021/2022 academic year in the Basic Physics course. Data were obtained through validation sheets, a self-evaluation inventory of religious characters, and observation sheets. Data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The results showed that integrating religious values in magazines was valid, with the Aiken validity coefficient ranging from 0.92 to 1.00. In addition, pre-service chemistry teachers have a religious character with an average score of 4.71, and pre-service biology teachers have a religious character with an average score of 4.77 in the affective domains A1 to A5 based on Bloom's taxonomy. The religious character of the two test subjects was categorized as very good. Thus, the Floating Market-based BioPhy magazine can be used to train the religious character of Pre-Service Science teachers. The developed magazine can be used in the Basic Physics course. Future research could be piloted for a larger sample as this research was limited to a not-so-large sample, and the magazine was developed only on fluid topics in the Basic Physics course.

Abstract

Integrating Islamic science in universities is very important to be applied to form human resources with character. This study aimed to analyze the expectations and implementation of the integration of Islamic values in lecturers of PTKIN in Aceh. This qualitative descriptive approach involved three deputy deans for academic affairs, nine lecturers, and 12 students from 3 PTKINs in Aceh. Data collection was through an interview, observation, and document analysis (curriculum, books, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and Rencana Pembelajaran Semesters (RPS) or semesterly lesson plans). Data analysis was carried out with an interactive model. The results revealed that integrating Islamic values into the sciences was very diverse in each PTKIN in Aceh. The lecturers had different views and interpretations of the paradigm of integrating Islamic values into learning regarding the boundaries and the concepts applied. Besides, there were no written standard rules and policies (SOP) on integrating Islamic values and limited references used by lecturers in implementing science learning that integrates Islamic values. PTKIN hopes to achieve its vision, goals, and objectives in integrating Islamic values. These objectives can be achieved in science learning. This study concluded that science integration at PTKINs in Aceh had not been consistently carried out, affecting the implemented level that may, in turn, affect the students’ learning. Nevertheless, this study has not examined a set of learning.

Abstract

Misconceptions are defined as wrong ideas or views of a person's concept different from the scientific concepts formulated by experts in their field. It must be reduced immediately so as not to hinder the process of understanding the next interconnected matter. Reducing students' misconceptions can be done through remedial learning. This study aimed to describe the phase in processing information that causes students' misconceptions based on learning theory, describe the implementation of an effective remedial learning strategy to reduce misconceptions in chemistry, and describe learning media that can be integrated into remedial learning in chemistry. The method used in this study was the systematic literature review (SLR) by searching articles on the electronics journal database. The database used in this study was ERIC, Google Scholar, and Sinta from 2011 to 2021. Seventeen articles were found in 14 indexed journals (Scopus and Sinta). The data was analyzed by collecting the related articles, reducing them based on the research focus, displaying the data, and concluding. The result showed that students build their understanding through assimilation and accommodation. The disequilibrium between both of these aspects causes a misconception. It must be reduced immediately through remedial learning. Six remedial learning strategies can reduce misconceptions in chemistry effectively, i.e., POE, Guided Inquiry, MRCD, Ember, Conceptual Learning, and ECIRR. This effectiveness is due to the phase of creating cognitive conflict. Integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) interactive media in implementing remedial learning strategies has a positive impact because interactive media can visualize abstract concepts. Hence, the cognitive accommodation phase is more effective.

Abstract

This research is stimulated by the low metacognitive ability of students in Indonesia. The real impact of students' low metacognitive ability is that they are unable to monitor themselves and do not know the nature of their learning goals. The use of the integrated E-LKPD (e-worksheet) with SQ4R learning strategies (Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Reflect, Review) has the potential to be an alternative choice to train students' metacognitive ability. This study aims to determine the validity of the product, and product characteristics as well as to train the metacognition ability’s profile of each student. This type of research is development research with the 4D model development. The integrated E-LKPD with SQ4R strategy has the characteristics; integrated with SQ4R strategy, train metacognitive abilities, attractive E-LKPD, flexible E-LKPD, interactive E-LKPD, and E-LKPD includes general requirements for LKPD. The results of the study prove that the integrated E-LKPD with the SQ4R strategy is valid with an average V index of 0.95 in the material aspect and 0.94 in the media aspect with the V table of 0.87. The results of the MAI questionnaire obtain a metacognitive profile of 85.25 with well-developed metacognition criteria. Thus, the developed E-LKPD has been tested to be valid and, therefore, can be used to train students' metacognitive ability.
