Abstract

The diversity of plant species in Indonesia has resulted in a wide variety of floral honey. The antioxidant activities of these Indonesian honeys have not been determined. Ten types of honey from indigenous Indonesian sources (9 monofloral; 1 heterofloral) were evaluated for their antioxidant activity using the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging method. The Folin-Ciocalteu test was used to determine the total phenolic content, and an aluminum chloride colorimetric assay was used to determine the total flavonoid content. SDS–PAGE was used to determine the molecular weights of the honey proteins. The mean antioxidant activity of the honey samples, defined as the IC50 of DPPH, ranged from 5.46 to 34.42. The mean total phenol content ranged from 27.57 to 53.85 mg GAE/100 g, and the mean flavonoid content ranged from 3.58–15.67 mg CE/100 g. A protein of ~60 kDa was detected in all honey varieties. A positive correlation was observed between antioxidant activity, total phenols, and total flavonoids, indicating that their phenolic and flavonoid components confer the antioxidant activity of these honey varieties. To the best of our knowledge, indigenous Indonesian honey, especially monofloral Calliandra honey, has shown greater antioxidant activity than other kinds of honey worldwide.

Abstract

Growth is an important physiological activity in the animal that produces meat. This study aimed to investigate the growth rate of male and female Kejobong goats raised by farmers in Kejobong District, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java Province, Indonesia. The materials observed in this study were 43 female Kejobong goats aged 0–36 months and 34 male Kejobong goats aged 0–18 months, which were selected based on the available reliance sampling method. The relationship between the body weight (Y) and age (X) of the goats was analysed by cross-sectional comparison, with simple statistics and correlation regression. The body weights of male and female Kejobong goats aged 0–12 months were similar. However, after 12 months of age, the body weight of the males was greater than that of the females. The regression analysis and correlation between age and body weight in male and female Kejobong goats showed that the equation of the regression in the male goats was Y = - 0.040 X2 + 2.662 X + 1.105 and that in the female goats was Y = -0.019 X2 + 1.566 X + 4.665. The correlation coefficients (r) between age and body weight in male and female Kejobong goats were 0.97 and 0.90, respectively, while the coefficients of determination (r2) were 93.50% and 80.60%, respectively. It was concluded that the body weights of male and female Kejobong goats increased with the age of the goats. The relationship between age and body weight of Kejobong goats was very close

Abstract

The crossbreed originated from male native chicken x female commercial layers, currently in Indonesia called a Super Native Chicken (Ayam Kampung Super). This study aimed to evaluate the ability of a selected local KUB (Ayam Kampung Unggul Balitbangtan) rooster to cross female ISA Brown chickens to produce Indonesian super native chickens. In comparison, the ISA hen was crossed with an unselected local chicken of bangkok descent (Ayam Kampung Turunan Bangkok, KTB) rooster, and the same hen strain was crossed with a Rhode Island Red (RIR) rooster. The treatment was crossbreeding (CB): CB1= KUB x ISA, CB2= KTB x ISA, and CB3= RIR x ISA. The results of the study showed that there were no significant (P>0.05) effects on fertility, hatchability, embryonic mortality, or chick abnormalities, but KUB x ISA resulted in significantly greater (P<0.01) chick weight and chick yield than did KTB x ISA. In conclusion, the KUB rooster was able to cross with ISA Brown to produce Super Native Chicken without significant adverse effects on fertility or hatchability, resulting in better quality day-old chicks than those produced by the KTB rooster.

Abstract

The objective of this experiment was to assess the production responses of forage-finished beef Bali cattle fed concentrated feed containing different types of leaf meal tropical legumes. Sixteen forage-finished male beef Bali cattle (Bos javanicus) with an average body weight of 175.20±27.85 kg and aged 1.5-2.5 years were raised for 54 days for data collection. A randomized completely block design was used, which consisted of four dietary treatments and four replicates. The dietary treatments, which were formulated to be isonitrogenous to provide 120 g/kg dry matter (DM) crude protein, included Cipelang grass (Pennisetum purpureum cv. Taiwan) as a basal diet (Con) or a control supplemented with a dietary concentrate containing either leaf meal of Gliricidia (Gliricidia sepium) 54.57% (Gliri), Leucaena (Leucaena leucocephala) 55.59% (Leu) or Moringa (Moringa oleifera) 40.85% (Mor). The feed intake, average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR), digestibility and blood parameters were measured. The results showed that legume leaf meal supplementation significantly increased (P<0.05) feed intake, ADG, digestibility, haemoglobin and total leucocytes, while FCR was not affected (P>0.05). The highest ADG was recorded for Leu and Mor cattle, which was in line with the highest feed intake. In conclusion, forage-finished beef Bali cattle fed Cipelang grass as a basal diet grew faster when supplemented with dietary concentrate containing Moringa or Leucaena leaf meal.

Abstract

Rambak crackers are made from cattle hides through the process of cleaning, threshing the hair and boiling. The research objective was to determine the physicochemical qualities of fresh cowhide, boiled cowhide, dried rambak crackers (krecek) and fried rambak crackers from 3 drying methods, namely, sun (M), oven (O), and sun oven (MO) drying methods. The material used was local cowhides from the slaughterhouse in Malang city. This experimental and counting method used a randomized block design with 3 treatments and 6 replications. The descriptive results showed that the average protein content in fresh cowhide, cecek and krecek was 36.18-84.97%, and the average ash content was 0.14-0.32%. The experimental results revealed k values of 170.40-217.54%, moisture contents of 16.55-18.22%, Aw values of 0.68-0.73, L values of 37.56-38.83, a* values of 0.58-1.26, and b* values of 6-6.98. The average fat content of the fried rambak crackers after sun, oven and sun oven drying was 5.83-29.06%, the average moisture content was 3.77-5.05%, the average aroma was 3.9-4.6, the average shape was 3.1-3.5, and the average preference was 2.5-3.3. In conclusion, 3 drying methods based on physicochemical and organoleptic properties can be applied and are preferred by panelists because drying using the oven method also has potential for cowhide crackers.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of supplementation with 200 ppm vitamin E in a diet with different nutrient contents on the performance and health status of the IPD-D3 candidate chicken strain. This research used 160 IPB-D3 chickens that were reared for 5 to 12 weeks. This experiment used a completely randomized factorial design with 4 treatments and 4 replications. P0 = control diet, P1 = control diet minus 3% ME and 3% PK, P2 = P0 + vitamin E 200 ppm, P3 = P1+ vitamin E 200 ppm. The data were analysed using ANOVA with an interaction’s significant difference test. The results showed that there was an interaction effect between supplementation with 200 ppm vitamin E and different nutrient contents on feed consumption (P<0.05). Supplementation of vitamin E (200 ppm) in the control diet according to Cobb’s recommendation gave the highest feed consumption. A decrease in the metabolizable energy (90,50 kcal kg-1) and crude protein (7.2%) of the diet (P1) significantly decreased (P<0.05) the final body weight, body weight gain and feed efficiency. Supplementation with 200 ppm vitamin E significantly (P<0.05) decreased the leukocyte count. In conclusion, reducing the metabolic energy and protein content of the diet reduced chicken growth by 10.40% and feed efficiency by 7.24%. Supplementation of vitamin E in the diet has a good effect on immunity and reduces leukocytes. According to the Cobb broiler standard (2018), the IPB-D3 chicken strain still responds to a diet that contains nutrients supplemented with 200 ppm vitamin E, which results in good performance and production

Abstract

Yogurt is a synbiotic yogurt made from a combination of probiotics and prebiotics, so the addition of bawang dayak extract (Eleutherine palmifolia (L) Merr) improved the functional properties of the synbiotic yogurt. The research objective was to analyse the physicochemical properties of yogurt synbiotic enriched with bawang dayak extract. The physicochemical properties, pH, acidity, syneresis and water holding capacity were analysed. This research used a completely randomized design (CRD), which consisted of 4 treatments and 3 replications with various concentrations of bawang dayak extract (T0 = 0%, T1 = 1%, T2 = 4% and T3 = 6%). The main ingredients used were skim milk, fresh milk, yogurt starter (Lactobacillus bulgaricus, Streptococcus thermophilus) and bawang dayak extract. The results of this study showed that the pH, acidity and water holding capacity were not significantly different (p>0.05) among the treatments, while syneresis was highly significantly different (p<0.01) at the T3 (6%) concentration.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the effects of the use of complete feed containing different protected soybean groats on the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), and total digestible nutrient (TDN) contents in male thin-tailed sheep. The materials used in this study were 15 male, thin-tailed sheep with an average initial body weight of 23.43 ± 1.40 kg. The research design used was a completely randomized design (CRD) with 3 treatments and 5 replicates. The treatments in this study were as follows: T1 = 100% complete feed, T2 = 90% complete feed + 10% protected soybean groats, and T3 = 80% complete feed + 20% protected soybean groats. The data were analysed via analysis of variance. The results of the analysis of variance revealed that the use of complete feed containing protected soybean groats had no significant effect (P > 0.05) on the consumption of dry matter, organic matter, or crude protein or on the digestibility of dry matter, organic matter, or crude protein. In conclusion, the use of complete feed containing protected soybean groats has no effect on the digestibility of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), or total digestibility of nutrients (TDN) in thin-tailed sheep.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of adding chicken skin on the physicochemical and sensory characteristics of chicken sausages. Five sausage chicken formulations were produced with the following compositions: T1: Control (unfortified chicken skin); T2: fortified chicken skin 5%; T3: fortified chicken skin 10%; T4: fortified chicken skin15%; and T5: fortified chicken skin 20%. Our results revealed that the addition of chicken skin significantly (P<0.05) decreased the moisture content but significantly (P<0.05) increased the protein content in chicken sausages. Compared with the control, the sausages with chicken skin had significantly (p<0.05) greater pH values. The CIE L* value was significantly (p<0.05) greater than the CIE a* value compared with those of the control. Compared with the control condition, chicken skin fortification in the range of 5–20% improved the characteristics of chicken sausages. There was an increase in protein and fat contents and in the CIE L* value. The texture profile of the sausage improved, especially its hardness. In the sensory assessment, chicken skin fortification with the chicken sausage mixture improved the level of preference for color and flavour, especially in the T5 treatment.

Abstract

Calcium pidolate is an organic calcium source that can be used as a supplement in the diet of broiler chickens. This is an innovative new form of calcium supplementation that promotes mineral absorption in broiler chickens. This study aimed to determine the effect of calcium pidolate supplementation on the growth performance of broiler chickens. A total of 120 one-day-old Ross chicks were used in this study. The broiler chickens were randomly distributed into two treatment groups with three replicates per treatment. The two treatment groups were the control group with calcium phosphorus supplementation and treatment 2 (T2) with calcium pidolate supplementation. The evaluated growth performance parameters included body weight, body weight gain, average daily gain, average feed consumption, feed efficiency, feed conversion ratio, percent liveability, and tibia breaking strength. The income over feed and chick cost (IOFCC) was also evaluated. The results showed no significant improvement in body weight, body weight gain, average daily gain, average feed consumption, feed efficiency, or percent viability in the T2 group. However, there was a significant increase in the tibia breaking strength of the T2 group compared to that of the control group. In addition, the control group had a greater IOFCC than did the T2 group. In summary, calcium pidolate supplementation may be used as a calcium source for improving the bone strength of broiler chickens.
