Abstract

Serbat drink is a traditional drink typical of the Malay of West Kalimantan made from plant spices usually served in the Saprahan tradition. Serbat drinks are widely circulated among the public because, empirically, they are useful for health problems, one of which is to treat diarrhea. Objectives: To analyzed the content of secondary metabolites, antioxidant activity, and antibacterial activity of serbat drink on the growth of Escherichia coli bacteria which were known from the presence or absence and measurement of the length of the inhibition zone (the clear area around the disc) with the positive control, namely ciprofloxacin, and negative control, namely distilled water. Methods: The plant spices used in this research include cardamom, cloves, star anise, cinnamon, pandan leaves, sappan wood, anise, and ginger. Serbat drink was made in 3 variations, namely composition A, composition B, and composition C. The three composition variations were carried out for two soaking times, namely 15 minutes and 540 minutes. This study used the thin-layer chromatography (TLC) method for phytochemical screening, the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-pikrilhidrazil) method for examination of antioxidant activity, and Escherichia coli bacteria cultured in 3 agar and tested using the disc diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer) to determine its antibacterial activity.  Results: The secondary metabolites contained in each serbat water sample, antioxidant activity from strongest to weakest among the serbat samples, and the absence of visible inhibition zones. Conclusion: Serbat drink does not have antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli. Keywords:  secondary metabolites, serbat drink, variations in composition, variations in the soaking time

Abstract

The nutritional problem in toddlers today is stunting which can be prevented by various actions that can be taken by health workers. Objectives: To described the role of health workers in all puskesmas in Kolaka Regency in an effort to prevent stunting. Methods: The design of this study was a descriptive survey by providing closed and open question questionnaires. The population was all health workers serving under-five nutrition spread across 14 health centers in Kolaka Regency. The research sample was determined by purposive sampling so that the number of samples was 30. Results: This study showed that 66.7% of health workers had not attended training, 60% were planning to innovate, but only 33.3% are innovating, and 93.3% are cooperating. The innovations that have been made include forming a nutrition-aware family team and a nutrition-smart mother class, while the obstacles experienced are the lack of public knowledge about stunting, the difficulty of changing people's behavior about the importance of nutrition, the lack of accurate tools in measuring children under five, and the lack of health workers who provide services. Conclusion: The role of health workers in preventing stunting in Kolaka Regency is quite good if it is supported by stunting prevention training and supporting tools so it is recommended that adequate training and tools are needed to prevent stunting. Keywords:  health workers, toddler nutrition, stunting

Abstract

Diabetic retinopathy is a major microvascular complication due to diabetes mellitus (DM) and prolonged hyperglycemia. One of the risk factors for the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy is lipid profile levels in DM patients. Objectives: To determined the relationship between lipid profile and the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in DM patients who follow the Chronic Disease Management Program at the  first level health facilities Klinik Tanjung Purwokerto. Methods: The number of respondents in this study was 49 people. The independent variables assessed were lipid profiles, including levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL, and HDL. The dependent variable is the incidence of diabetic retinopathy determined by an ophthalmologist. Statistical analysis to determine the relationship between lipid profile and the incidence of diabetic retinopathy used the Chi-square test and calculated the odds ratio (OR). Results: The results showed that there was no relationship between levels of total cholesterol (p=0.586), triglycerides (p=1), and LDL (0.719) with the incidence of diabetic retinopathy. The statistical analysis results of the relationship between HDL levels and the incidence of diabetic retinopathy were known to have a p-value = 0.046 (OR 4.83; 95% CI 1.23-18.98). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between HDL levels and the incidence of diabetic retinopathy in Type 2 DM patients at the FKTP Klinik Tanjung Purwokerto. DM patients with abnormal HDL levels are 4.83 times more likely to develop diabetic retinopathy than DM patients whose HDL levels are normal. Keywords: diabetes mellitus,  lipid profile, diabetic retinopathy

Abstract

Inflammatory cytokines have a role in triggering cell signals in colorectal cancer. They increase signaling pathways into cells via the Janus kinase pathway (JAK) - signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) -suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCs) JAK-STAT. SOCs2 protein is a cytoplasmic protein that can inhibit activation of JAK-STAT pathway so that it prevents cascade of signals into the nucleus. This protein is thought to have decreased in adenocarcinoma colorectal. Objectives: To reveal the expression of SOCs2 protein in 37 paraffin block samples in Anatomy Pathology Department Medical Faculty Andalas University. Methods: Data were taken from medical records and histopathology was assessed by HE. SOCs2 expression was evaluated by immunohistochemistry using SOCs2 polyclonal antibody (bs-1896R). Cytoplasmic expression was counted using Image J software. Results: The average of age was 56.57 years, 21 samples (55.8%) were male, depth of invasion was mostly in the tunica muscularis (T3), and 7 cases of malignancy (18.9%) were poorly differentiated. SOCs2 expression was  5 cases (13.5%).   Conclusion: There was SOCs2 expression in a small proportion of colorectal adenocarcinoma. Keywords:  SOCs2 protein, cytoplasmic inhibitor, JAK-STAT, cell signaling

Abstract

The use of ventilators during the COVID-19 pandemic has increased the incidence of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP). This is accompanied by a trend of antibiotic resistance resulting from irrational use. The emergence of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacteria during the pandemic presents a challenge due to limited antibiotic options. Objective: To determined the pathogenic bacterial profile and antibiotic susceptibility in Ventilator Associated Pneumonia (VAP) patients with COVID-19 infection. Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study with a retrospective approach using secondary data from the medical records of UKRIDA Hospital patients from January 2021 to August 2021. Results: Most of the study sample had characteristics of being male (71.9%), aged 25-64 years (78.1%), overweight (40.6%), and hypertension (40.6%) as the comorbid. Gram-negative bacteria is the pre-dominated bacteria in this study, with Acinetobacter baumannii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia being the most isolated bacteria. Antibiotics such as colistin still showed good susceptibility to Acinetobacter baumannii and Klebsiella pneumoniae, with 75% and 90% sensitivities, respectively. Antibiotics such as linezolid, tigecycline, and gentamicin-synergy still showed (100%) sensitivity to all Gram-positive bacteria. Conclusion: The discovery of MDR bacteria in patients with VAP and the limited availability of susceptible antibiotics highlights the importance of conducting antibiotic resistance surveillance and infection control, especially in the era of COVID-19.Keywords:  antibiotic susceptibility, bacteria profile, COVID-19, VAP
