Abstract

Hajj and Umrah are popular in Indonesia, where most people are Muslim. Data shows that every year, the number of Hajj and Umrah pilgrims tends to increase. This is the background for the proliferation of Hajj and Umrah travel businesses in Indonesia. As technology progressed, Indonesians started to insist on conducting Umrah mandiri, or independent Umrah, independently, without the assistance of a travel agency. We conducted this study using the Nusuk platform in the Independent Umrah Community to analyze the impact of lifestyle on travel intention and motivation. We used SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) as the analysis method, with the assistance of LISREL software. The study sample consisted of 300 respondents. The findings showed that lifestyle and travel motivation variables have a positive and significant influence on the intention to use the Nusuk platform. This research not only employs a statistical tool but also analyzes the independent Umrah community's intention to utilize the new platform, a topic not previously explored in prior studies. We anticipate that this research will assist Nusuk platform managers in creating more appealing programs, thereby boosting user intentions.

Abstract

This study analyzes the transformation of Nglanggeran village, Gunung Kidul Regency, in the Special Region of Yogyakarta. This village, which was before known as a desolate, impoverished, and water-scarce location, has been turned into an ecotourism hub that has won numerous accolades on a national and worldwide scale. This study employs a qualitative approach from a socio-technical perspective based on actor-network theory (ANT). ANT provides analytical tools that allow us to trace human-nonhuman associations as they proliferate and bring about socio-technical changes. The results of the analysis describe Nglanggeran's transformation in terms of phases, each of which is characterized by distinct socio-technical associations or networks. The first phase was aimed at instilling environmental consciousness within the community. In the second phase, the principles of ecotourism began to be gradually introduced into the community ethos. The third phase is characterized by the unification of diverse stakeholders in the advancement of ecotourism initiatives in Nglanggeran Village. This collective endeavor encompasses bolstering community trust, governmental endorsement, and the strategic integration of technology into ecotourism management paradigms. Each successive phase from inception to the present shows the increase of key actors, facilitating the transformation of Nglanggeran Village from post-disaster dilapidation to a state of enhanced welfare fostered by the auspices of ecotourism. The research findings attest to the multifaceted engagement of local and non-local actors in effectuating the transformation of Nglanggeran Village. Moreover, it is a socio-technical network in which various technical and natural resources from various sites (from the past and from overseas) are brought together to create a ‘new locality’ in Nglanggeran village.

Abstract

The knowledge of producing batik has been passed down from generation to generation. This research uses a motion capture device to document the batik-making activities using canting to yield accurate movement patterns of the batik artisans in digital form. The study aims to identify the hand movements of the batik artisans as they work with canting, which will serve as the basis for teaching the traditional batik-making process to beginners. This study starts with an ethnographic approach: observations and interviews conducted at several batik houses in Central Java, followed by ergonomic and human factors laboratory experiments. By analyzing the motion captures, we learn that a batik artisan makes a specific hand movement pattern known as Pola Layangan. Pola Layangan forms a cycle comprising four phases: the malam phase, the blowing phase, the drawing phase, and the finishing phase. The digital documentation of this hand movement pattern can serve as a reference for studying batik-making activities. It can also serve as a basis for teaching beginners the traditional batik-making process.

Abstract

What is Sufism? In simple terms, Sufism is a moral-spiritual aspect of Islamic teachings. When we attempt to define it, we encounter a scientific discourse about the ‘deepest secret’, which is significantly more intricate than we initially thought. Therefore, readers should independently investigate and draw their conclusions, which may include a comprehensive exploration of the book under review. Sufism, as a practice, teaches us how to feel the deepest secret intimately and substantially. Of course, capturing the breadth and abstractness of this experience in an instant definition anchor will be challenging, particularly when this mystical experience manifests in or intersects with Sufis’ moral choices in the social, political, economic, and cultural realms. Bruce B. Lawrence, at the end of this book, compares Sufism to an elephant in a dark room. Anyone who tries to guess it—with a particular approach, methodology, and scientific perspective—is not uncovering the whole thing, but only groping for partial reality as it appears in the gaps of his perception.

Abstract

Jakarta has experienced numerous significant floods since 2002, including those in 2007, 2013, and 2015, a source of concern for the residents of Jakarta. Residents of DKI Jakarta have expressed their concerns regarding the disaster on Twitter and other platforms, which offer a comprehensive account of the flood experiences of Jakarta residents, which is beneficial to stakeholders in the field of flood management. The status of an incident can be rapidly determined using Twitter data. This project investigates the Twitter responses of Jakartans to the flood disaster. The analysis of flood tweets from Jakarta residents is conducted in three phases: 2015, 2020, and 2021. Utilizing topic modeling, this initiative maps emerging topics. Topic modeling is particularly effective in the context of flood issues, as it can assist in the clustering of topics and thedissemination of specific information to the public. Seven modeling-based topic groups are used to organize twenty topics. The results of this project indicate that the majority of Jakartan flood tweets are related to "Weather Report" topics. The findings indicated that "Submerged Houses" has a substantial proportion and is anticipated to increase with each flood. The increasing number of submerged houses in Jakarta should cause concern among the local populace.

Abstract

Technology integrates technical aspects with social, economic, political, and cultural aspects of human life, offering three layers of meaning: artifact, process, and knowledge. This research examines Rumah Belajar ERBE, a social learning space for impoverished communities, from a perspective known as social shaping of technology (SST). This research employs moment translation analysis, a technique derived from actor-network theory, to investigate the affordances that the learning space provides to the local community. This article explores the dynamic relationship between ERBE, which is composed of artifacts and activities, to understand the role of social technology in improving the lives of scavenger village residents. The findings reveal that the initiator and his house require proximity to ERBE to optimize the social learning process. Physical and functional affordances identified through the space's character and the use of non-fixed furniture make them multi-functional rooms that accommodate poor communities' social learning.

Abstract

Recent technological developments have brought back virtual reality (VR) as a new creative medium. This research investigates how artists with no prior VR experience perceive and employ immersive VR environments to translate their physical world creative concepts into the virtual realm. By bridging the gap between traditional and virtual reality art, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of affordance theory in today’s context. Using a phenomenological approach, data was collected through immersive VR painting sessions, think-aloud protocols, and reflective interviews. Over three sessions, one selected participant utilized OpenBrush to explore the affordances of VR painting. Key findings reveal a transformative shift in artistic knowledge and practice. Participants adapted their understanding of materials and techniques to the unique affordances of VR, aligning with affordance theory and actor-network theory. The study's implications for artists are that by integrating VR into traditional art practices, artists can explore new creative avenues. Additionally for VR developers, the findings suggest potential improvements to VR tools, such as enhancing haptic feedback or developing more intuitive interfaces to better support artistic expression.

Abstract

In their traditional role, museums have served the purpose of preserving and educating cultural and historical artifacts. However, as time goes by, museums have grown from their traditional roles into leading-edge, interactive, experiential education platforms for visitors using the latest technological media, such as virtual reality. The study aims to explore the Indonesian museum visitors' perceptions—both positive and negative— toward VR usage in a museum and examine their expectations of an immersive VR experience, particularly related to VR games. The study employs content analysis throughan exploratory descriptive survey to address respondents' demographic background, past museum visit experience, and expectations of VR experience. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis and descriptive statistics, accompanied by a general discussion. Findings reveal the potential for utilizing VR technology at museums. Over the past ten years, there has been an expectation for museums to expand their focus from object preservation and display to visitor engagement, enabling them to create enjoyable and memorable experiences, while maintaining their mission of knowledge dissemination.
